2 PRESS COLONY. Largely Attended MeetiDg of Newspaper Men. MANY PROPOSITIONS RECEIVED Permanent Organization of the Los An-reles Press Colony Association Effected. lot the past week the novel idea oi the aewspaper men of this city to colonize in some spot conveniently located has been the subject of considtrable discussion iv real estate and other circles. A week ago the aewspaper men met and alter deciding to Invite offers oi sites and houses from property ownsrs adjourned until yesterday aftetaoon at 3 o'clock, at which time the meeting was called to order in Judge Hutton'a courtroom by H.

Y. Evening Newt. Oa moUou oi Lester Osborne it was decided that a permanent organization be formed, and that it be named "The Los Angelea Press Colony Association." On motion of W. G. Taylor the temporary orfleere were unanimously elected as the permanent officers.

Mr. Taylor then moved that the membership be limited to the thirty original signers of the roll. Mr. Kemp offered an amenament to the effect that the membership be arranged so as to include all aewspaper men now in service iv this city, from the editor and proprietor down. This was followed by a long discussion and being finally put to vote was lost.

"Mr. Stevens stated that the list had been open for some months, and had any of those newspaper men who were not present desired to sign they had ample opporunlty, and nn one bnt themselves were to blame. It was then moved and carried that the newspaper men present who had not Bigned be invited to sign, after which the roll of charter membership was tothe close. Tbe chair then invited newspaper men present to sign the roll, after which Secretary Geo. R.

Broadbere moved that an invitation be extended to all the dona fide newspaper men in the city to join. Carried. On motion of Carleton Kemp the chair appointed the following committees to take charge of the propositions beforo the meeting, and alter investigating the same to re- Sirtat the next meeting: Messrs. Burton, arqnhar. Miller, Osborne and Searles.

On motion the Secretary then read the following propositions: lot Angeles Frets Colony Association: Dear Sirs: would advise you of the desirability of the location of the towr site of Rosecrans, situated five and a half miles southwest from the city limits ou the Rosecrans motor road, which connects with the Main street line at Agricultural, Park. The townsite lies on the mesa, with view which canaot he surpassed iv Southern California, overlooking as it does the beautiful Santa Ana valley, San Pedro, Redondo Beach, tbe city of Los Angeles and the ocean. The following proposition we submit for your consideratiou: Wo will agree to deed a good high level lot, 50x140, to each newspaper man who bnilds (providing no less than twenty houses are commenced inside of sixty days) houses that will average not than $800 each. We will haul all material, ior building, free over our road, give a free pass ior one year to residents, pipe water to every house with free rates for one year, and will also assist you to obtain liberal terms on lumber, Rosecrans has the following advantages, we believe no o'her suburban site in Los Angeles county Frequent trains for both passengers and freight, plenty of pure water, fine elevator, and within easy distance oi the city and ocean. Richardson. lot Angeles Press Ctlony association: Dear are desirous of our appreciation of the hard-working newsgatherers for the daily press of Los Angeles, and we beg leave tofubmitthe following offer for the location of the Press Colony on our Union Park tract, which lies about three and a half les south oithe present newspaper offices: The Central avenue street cars pass within three minutes' walk of the tract, and a motor line is planned ior Compton avenue, which bounds the tract on the east. Vernon Park is surrounded by handsome rows ol shade trees, and nearly every lot hes either fruit trees in bearing, or else bearing grape vines. The purest water is obtainable anywhere npon the tract. The soil is nearly perfect for frnit and the drainage is always good.

Thirty minutes is ample time in which to drive to Vernon Park from the heart of the city. The present value of the lots is $51 0 and $550 for corners. We offer to give a lot free to each member of the staff of the flva daily papers: the Herald, Tribune, Times, Express and Telegram, who will make his selection at once and who will erect and occupy a house on the lot to cost net less than $1,000. Jas Angeles Press Colony Association: Gentlemen read with much interest the article published In the Herald of this date (March 3) headed "The Press Colony," and think too much praise cannot be bestowed upon the generous-bcirted capitalist who made the liberal offer therein mentioned. Appreciating the great sad nureqnissd services rendered to the people of mm Sesthera country by the gentlemen of the press, and in the same spirit that prompted the generous offer referred to, we hereby tender jou twenty-five lots In Whittier, which we consider the best part ol the earth, and caeh lot worth not less than one thousand dollars provided that yon put upon lot 1 seat residence and occupy the same. In addition thereto, II you see fit to accept this proposition, we will donate two ad- ditioual lots and erect thereon a fine build- ing aa club rooms lor a press club aud do- nate the same outright to the members oi the press resident in Whittier. It was stated that another proposition from these gentlemen was held la reserve; that it included the erection of houses to be paid lor on the installment plan, and that the oflVr was not restricted to twentyfive lots, but might be increased. Los Angeles Press Colony Association: Dear proposition to form a "Press Colony" did not become known in i Monrovia until to-day (February 28) or we should have made a proposition before this.

I would say ot behalf of our leading citizens I that we will make you as favorable a pro- 1 position aa any of the suburban have done. You will realise without my pointing them ont the many advantages Monrovia 1 possesses over most other greater 1 healthfulnets of the foothills, the case of access which the rapid transit will afford etc. The large excursion arranged for tbe Ist is taking the attention of Monrovians and others, but we will try to formulate an offer to reach you by Saturday. Angeles Press Colony Association: McClay San Fernando i Land and Water Company offer aa follows to your Colony: Two corner lots to each of i the members, on which to build homes. The lots are in the town of Pacoima, on the westerly side of tbe railroad. On the easterly side of the railroad similar lots are selling as high as $1,500 per lot. These lots are under the water system of the great submerged dam in Pacoima creek. Water is now furnished in iron pipes, with a pressure of about 200 feet perpendicular.

An excursion will run out to the place ami San Fernando on Tuesday at 9 a.m., at which time we hope you will visit the place. Respectfully, Ban Fernando L. W. Co. PBR R.

Lot Angeles Prtss Colony Association: Dear Sirs: authority of the Board of Directors we hereby offer your i Press Association one 'ot in the town of 1 Burbank for each house built thereon, at a cost of not less than $1,500, to be occti- pied as residences and homes for members of your Association. Our townsite will, within ninety days, have a $7,000 schoolhouse, two churches, bank, etc. Our climate is unsurpassed for health: we are only ten miles from the center of los Angeles, and by the first of June will have the Ostrich Farm Motor Road running, and we believe also tho Glendile Motor Road, which, with the Southern Pacific, will make three railroads.

Richardson, Seeratsry. It was stated that the following verbal propositions had beeu received: From Mr. U. J. Griffith, an acre in the Los Feliz raucho for each newspaper man ho will build thereon, th location to be elected by the committee.

It was represented in connection with this offer that a hotel would probably be erected iv the vicinity of the grouud selected, and that the transportation to and I om the location I would.be free. i From Messrs Raymond and Markham, ottering to give each newspaper man who will build, a lot in the Titus rancho, East San Gabriel. From E. J. Baldwin, offering to give a lot in Arcadia to each member of the association who will build.

Iv connection with this offer it was stated that N. C. Carter had guaranteed the money to build on the lots, returns to be made in monthly installments. From J. de Barth Shorb, through W.

R. Burke, lots 50x200 at Kamona. This offer included houses built by Mr." Shorb to be paid for $200 down aiid the balance in monthly Installments; ihe lots to be selected by the committee. It was also stated that the citizens of Al hambra desired to meet the committee at that town, the proposition to be made on that occasion.

It was also stated that the proprietors of Nadeau Park -and other townsites desired to make propositions to the committee. Several other propositions were received 1 and read, bnt these related to tbc sale of i lots at reduced and could not be con- 1 sidered, the above having been so much 1 more favorable to the newspaper men. After the reading of the propositions, which were placed in the hands of the committee for investigation, it was suggested by Mr. Burton that the committee include in its report the matter of transportation facilities, which were considered of the utmost Importance. On motion of Mr.

Taylor the city editors of the five papers were appointed as a committee to confer with the capitalists and loan associations, with a view of securing funds with which to erect houses, should a location be selected where tbe proposition does not include the house. The meeting then adjourned to meet at the same place next Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The following is a list of the members of the Association: 3. W. Burton, H.
