LOS ANGELES DAILY HERALD. VOL. lie. MOIN DAY MORNING. JANUARY 28, FIVE CENTS.

ABOUT THE CITY. A Woman's Death from Carbolic Acid. WAITING FOE HER HUSBAND. Sad Pligrht of a Family Lately Arrived from the News. Mrs.

Maria Ford died at her son's residence yesterday afternoon from an overdose of carbolic acid, which an inquest jury decided was taken with intent to commit suicide. She was a woman of 44 years of age and was living with her son, G. J. P. Ford on New Depot street near Pearl.

He is a member of the firm of Brown and Ford, which deals in marble and granite on San Pedro street. Yesterday morning about half past eight Mr. Ford was in the bath-room taking a bath and he heard his mother, who occupied the room next adjoining, breathing with great difficulty. Hastily dressing himself, he went into the room and found Mrs. Ford lying upon a lounge, suffering intensely and almost unconscious.

There was a strong odor of carbolic acid, and in her pocket was found a bottle containing a small quantity oi tbe article. A doctor was sent for, and every effort made to resuscitate the dying woman, she presently became unconscious and remained so to tbe end. She died about 3 o'clock in the afternoon. Mrs. Ford had been ill for a number of years, and for some time had despaired of ever recovering.

Her suicide was probably the result of her despondent state of feeling. A MISSING HUSBAND. DUtreselnjr Incident nt the Southern Pacific Depot. A rather distressing incident has engaged the attention of the railway men around the Southern Pacific Depot, on San Fernando street, during the past two days. On the overland train which pulled into the city from the Fast on Thursday last, arrived an Englishwoman and her seven children, the eldest being a girl of eighteen and the youngest a toddler of but three years of age.

They looked anxiously around with expectant glances, but their faces drooped, and the railway special officer, who saw that they were strangers, asked what he could do for them. The mother of the children who gave her name as Leach, stated that her husband came to this country about fourteen months ago and obtained employment as traveling agent for Dewey of San Francisco. About seven weeks ago he sent money to his family with instructions for them to come on to Los Angeles, where he would meet them, "but," said the speaker, "we do not know where to look for him or where he is." The officer undertook to find a suitable lodging-house for the little party, but Mrs. Leach declared that she would not leave the depot until her husband arrived. The little party therefore sat around all night and all the next day, but the husband did not put in an appearance, co when nightfall came tbe boys about tbe depot insisted on the strangers accepting accommodations at Mr.

Oilman's on Ann street. All day Saturday they waited at the depot again, and yesterday they once more sat faithfully watching, but in vain. A dispatch sent to Messrs. Dewey was responded to with the information that Leach was in San Diego or San Bernardino, so an effort will be made today to locate him and tell him of the straits his family is in. TAMMANY HALL.

Resolutions Adopted at yesterday's Meeting. Tammany Hall held a meeting yesterday afternoon at the Iroquois club rooms with about seventy-five members in attendance. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: First President, Tom Keefe; Second President, Chas. Berry; Secretary, John D. Schieck: Treasurer, R.

A. Ling; Executive Committee, Thomas McCaffery, David Mattheson, Geo. D. Roberts, Chas. P.

Kearney, John O'Hanlon, C. E. Roberts. The following resolutions were adopted: "The Tammany Hall of Los Angeles city congratulate the citizens of Log Angeles, irrespective of party, upon the successful passage of the Charter. We must emphatically pronounce ourselves to support such candidates for the office of Councilmen as will pledge themselves to secure the passage of an ordinance giving the city an outfall sewer to the sea.

We hereby request the Park Committee of the City Council to push the work of the public parks to completion at tho earliest possible day, thus giving work to many deserving laborers now idle in this city. We request the proper city officials to continue the work of improvement on the streets. The club will meet next Sunday afternoon to consider the question, of candidates for tbe next municipal election. The ''Tribune" Trouble. There were rumors in the streets yesterday to the effect that the Sheriff today would be instructed to lock the doors of the Tribune office if a settlement of the indebtedness is not made.

One of the stockholders of the paper, however, when spoken to on the subject, said that he had heard of the rumor, and that there was a possibility that such an order might be likely to be given. He was of the opinion, however, that the indebtedness would be cleared off, and there would be no occasion for the Sheriff to take action in the matter. Fell From the Trestle. Edward Kemp was brought to the Police Station last eveningsuffering from several severe bruises. He said he wa walking on tbe Santa Fe trestle work in East Los Angeles and was knocked off an engine.

It was the general opinion, however, tbat he simply fell from the trestle and received the injuries. Undelivered Telegrams. The following are the telegrams remaining at the Western Union telegraph office. No. 0 Court street, January 27th: E.
