Heizer In addition to his acting career, York has had success as a scriptwriter. "I won semifinalist status in this year's Scriptapalooza (a reputable Hollywood scriptwriting competition, which gets top production companies to read your material) with my NYPD Blue script, 'Vengeance Is and a Certificate of Creative Excellence from ABC-TV President Alex Wallau for my TV series, Fortune, in their talent development program." According to York, the series takes place in a fictitious New England community, and is described as a mixture of Northern Exposure, Cheers and the Andy Griffith Show. He is talking to an agency that writes material for Mel Gibson, Denzel Washington and Michelle Pfeiffer, and is working on a feature film script. Although the script is about ranching in Colorado, he compares many of the conflicts he has written into the script to farming in Ohio. As might be imagined, York has a hectic schedule.

"Through the week, it's auditioning, writing, phone calls and e-mails and meetings. On the weekends, I drive to the mountains at nearby Big Bear Lake and Lake Arrowhead Resort when I get tired of the city, and usually go to the Santa Monica and Venice beaches on Saturdays with my racing chair just 20 minutes away and go to church on Sundays. "One thing I have realized is that there are a lot of 'lost' people out here, and it makes me appreciate where I'm from and the Christian values my mother raised me with," York said. "Darke County has some of the best people anywhere, and I love coming home to visit." "In a split second, my whole life changed. But everything I've done worth mentioning, I've done after my accident, and these wheels have actually been a motivational tool." In 1997, he graduated from Anderson University in Indiana with a triple major in psychology, sociology and social work not the usual majors for a future actor and scriptwriter, but York never planned to go into show business.

"While attending college, I noticed they were going to shoot a film at Union Station in Indianapolis, set in 1954. The film, Going All the Way, included soldiers coming back from the Korean War, so I thought they may want an 'injured soldier' to add realism to their film, and they did. "Funny thing was, I was a soldier with Ben Affleck before he hit it big with Good Will Hunting. I was just an extra but caught the bug. "The director, Mark Pellington, gave me his home address and phone number in L.A.

and told me to give him a call if I ever made it out here." Almost two years after graduation, York did go to Hollywood, and called Pellington, "and after two weeks, he had hooked me up with my agent, KazarianSpencer and Associates." Since then, York has appeared in feature films, independent films, television shows and commercials. In addition to Going All the Way, he has had lead or supporting roles in Artificial Intelligence, A Man in the Dark, An Unchanged Melody and Wounded Rose, among others. On television, he's been in Six Feet Under and Covert Action, and By Virginia Burroughs For the Dayton Daily News ARCANUM Arcanum native Marcus A. York has seen former NFL running back Jim Brown in the frozen food section at his grocery store, and Justine Bateman at the newsstand buying a Playboy because there was an article in it about her new clothing line. No, York didn't see these folks in Arcanum, but in Hollywood, where he lives and works as an actor and scriptwriter.

He was born and raised in Arcanum. His mother, Becky York, lives in Arcanum. His father, Glenn; grandfather, John; and brothers and other relatives are in Sidney and "scattered around Darke and Shelby counties." York graduated from Arcanum High School in 1984 and, in 1988, was in an accident a mile west of Arcanum that left him a paraplegic. On the way to his grandfather's house, "I reached in my back seat for my gym bag and, with my left hand, inadvertently pulled up on the steering wheel too much," he said from Hollywood. The car was going 60 mph, slammed into a ditch, went airborne, flipped several times and landed upside down on its rooftop in a cornfield.

Arcanum's fire and rescue team took him to Wayne Hospital in Greenville. From there he was transported by CareFlight to Miami Valley Hospital, where he stayed in the rehabilitation unit with a broken back for almost three months. He came home in a wheelchair. ACTOR AND SCRIPTWRITER Marcus A. York has overcome an accident that left him a paraplegic.

"One thing I thought was a little strange was being in the living room of Mike Farrell after having watched him on M.A.S.H. for so long, helping him and Melissa Gilbert with her campaign for president of our unionguild, SAG (Screen Actors Guild). But TV and film actors are everywhere," York said.

"Coming from Arcanum, you just don't think you'd be running into them left and right as you go into Sutton's Grocery Store, but they're just like everyone else, running errands and getting groceries."
