It was clear to her that the building was inadequate, and approaches were made to foundations for as sistance. Mr. Rosmwald gave the first $25,000 toward a new building. J. Rockefeller Gift Mrs.

Emma Ransom was then chairman of the Committee of Management and she was disturbed because the Y.W.A. wanted to give only $10,000 to the work in Harlem. Mrs. Ransom went to talk with J. P.

Morgan and to ask him for $50,000 to aid in the building program. Mr. Mor gan felt that more money was needed, and as a result negotiations were continued with important financial leaders in the city. Mrs. Saunders had studied the community, knew its needs, and was able to secure the coorpera tion of John D.

(Martin Photo) Y.W.C.A. in Harlem could get continuous income, lit also suggested that this might be preferable to giving a residence build ing which was then sorely needed, since at that time hotel service was completely unavailable to Negroes in New York City. Mrs.

Saunders insisted that she preferred the residence. Before Mr Rockefeller made the final decision, Mrs. Saunders was asu ed to make a budget for her desired residence and prove that stock. Mr. Rockefeller's account ant checked the budget with great care.

Because the Harlem Y.W.C.A. was so nearly self supporting; and because the plans were so clear, the branch was given approxi mately $300,000. When she retired the budget had reached the $400,. 000 level and 90 of the income was produced in the community itself. Mrs.

Saunders is shown above with Miss Margaret Webster who was Executive Director of the City wide Y.W.C.A. for 20 of the 33 years Mrs. Saunders served. E. E.
