tit fallowing gives tit articular i of tit Anion en Lake Ontario, on Sunday Jane tie 27th. 1756. And at tit fame Timejbcws tie Strength of tie Enemy tl Lake, unknown to us lefore. At half paft 3 in the the Sloop Ofwego, Commodore Bradley, mounted with four 4 Pounders, one 3 Pounder, and 10 Swivels, manned with 45 Men, Sailors and Soldiers with the Ontario, Capt. Lafory, of the fame Number of Gun and Men, together with Capt.

Farmer, in a fmall Schoor.er of 14 Men, and 6 Swivel Guns faw two French Veflels to Windward, when the Commodore threw out Signals for Chace, which being quickly obferved, they all three hauled their Wind, and gave Chace, getting every Thing ready to encage. At 3 Quarters paft three faw two more Sail in the lame quarter, wura ivvu ucucn hove to, hoilted awhite nag, at mcrore ropmau head, and fired two Guns to Leeward, as a Sig a1 for the two Windwardmoft Veflels to join them At five, being diftant from the French Commodore one Mile and a half, found they were alj four Schooners, the two neareft large Veflels, with' fe ven Guns a Side. On this Capt. Lafory of the Ontario, beiner called on board the Commodore, it was agreed moll prudent to avoid engaging, the Enemy Teing greatly fuperior to them and they all three bore away, and made all the Sail they could for Ofweeo, the four Schooners' of the fc. nemv eivine Chace, and firing feveral Broadfides and Chace Guns, which happily did no Da maee.

Capt. Farmer in the fmall. Schooner fell a ftern of the other two very much; and the Enemy comine op fall, he haul'd his Wind to the North ward and the four French Schooners giving him Chace, and firing their Chaces at him till hleven o'Clock. when the Fire ceafed, and our other Schooners being then out of Sight, imagine Capt Farmer to be taken. At 2 in the Afternoon the two other Schooners got to Ofwego and the next Day the French chaced another fmall Schooner within 6 Miles of Ofwego." fie following Relation from Allan of tie Engage me Hi letiveen our at omen under Captain Brad Ireet, and tie French Regular Troops, Canadians and Indians, is more particular lan any ive have yet received, viz.

That the Battoes were returning in adifper fed Manner from Ofwego. 1 That about 50 of our Battoes that were foremoft were attacked by the Enemy from the Lalt Side of the River, about 10 or 1 1 Miles from Ofwego, who killed feveral of our People, and took their Battoes, in which about 300 of the Enemy crofled over to the Weft fide of the River. That when Capt. Bradllreet came up with a few Uattoes, where the relt of the fcnemy were polled on the Eaft fide of the River, they fired upon him. borne other ifattoes loon came up and joined him.

He went upon an Ifland near the Well Shore, where the Enemy's Fire wounded feveral of his Men. The Battoes Hill coming up, Capt. Bradllreet's Party increafed to about 200 Men The Enemy made three Attempts to ford the River, in order to attack Mr. Bradllreet, but were each time beat back with Lofs. Their Fire then ceafed, and Captain Bradltreet judging they were pone to the nrjrjer or lower in order to get over there, he lent Orders to the Officers of the Battoemen, who were near the lower Ford, to defend that Poll, and he at the fame Time landed with the 200 Men, and proceeded forwards along the River Side, in order to obftrutt the Enemy's Landing at the upper Ford Before he could take Pod there, the 300 of the Enemy, who had crofled in our Battoes, and were marching to attack us, met Captain Bradllreet and his Party.

They were very near together before they difcovered each ther. They engaged, and after they had fired on each other for fome Time, Captain Bradllreet ordered his Men to give a Huzza, and rulh upon the enemy, wmcn they did, and put them to Flight. The Enemy took to the River, where our People kept firing upon them, and killed Numbers. the The Enemy, who remained on the Eall fide of the River, after they had been three times repulfed by our People, in endeavouring to ford over, made no further Attempts, and did not appear in the AUoo feeing our Battoes coming up the River in fuch Numbers. The Prifoner fays there were about 600 Regulars and Canadians and about 100 Indians.

We have taken near 100 Arms, two Prifoners, and a great many Packs of the E. demy's. It is thought the Enemy loft at leafl 100 Men, and, from the Difcoveries made by our Scouts the next Morning, they had many wounded. Amongfl Lofs oiain were levcrai Indians. it is radped our amounts to about 40.

We had 2 flightly PHILADELPHIA, July 19. Extratl of a Letter from a Gentleman in London, to dr rtf pendent in Philadelphia, dated May Your Proprietors, as I have in another Letter hinted, out of Compliments to the King, and Duke of Cumber land, offered to commifllonate whomfoever they flaould nominate to be Governor of Pennfylvania, and thereupon THOMAS POWNALL, Efq; who was not long fince in your Parts, was for Governor, and he waited on the Penns, or one of them accordingly but they infifting on his giving Five Thoufand Pounds Bond, to obferve fuch Inductions as they fhouW give him he (to his Honour be it fpoken) abfulutely refufed accepting the Offer. This Conduft of the Proprietors, it's thought, will not tend to their Reputation, but render them difa greeable to the King and Minjftry. And if it ftould oc cafion thofe Inftruftions to be brought to, Light, your Afl'embly will then need no other Vindication. The In novations which are attempting to be made in your Con ftitution at this Time, (the moft improper of all Times) will, no doubt, appear to have fprung from that Foun tain only, and to have been the principal Caufe of all the Opposition made to your Grants for his Majefty'i Ser vice'.

However, for your Comfort, I have the Pleafure to aflure you, that a new Governor will be appointed foon, but upon what Terms I do not know they cannot be worfe than heretofore." ExtraB of another Letter from Louden, dated May 6. I am this Day credibly informed, that another Perfon is nominated to be Governor of your Province, and very probably will be commiflionatcd. He is Capt. William Denny, a Gentleman of good Character and 'tis faid he "will alfo be made Lieutenant Colonel; but on what Terms he has agreed with the Proprietors, I am ignorant of as yet, but it's thought they will be more lax than formerly If they are not, I cannot conceive how he will have it in his Power, either to ferve his Majefty, Proprietors, or the People." July 29. A Letter from Antigua, dated the 6th Inflant, fays, On Sunday Blandford Man of War brought in a large Bourdeaux Man." And from Barbados there is Advice that Capt.

About the lame time a Dutchman and his Wife were fcalped near Philip Dabie's, on the Maryland oiae 01 me juine. Yellerday, within ten Miles ot this I own near M'Clure's Gap, fome Indians (the Number uncertain) came to the Houfe of Jacob Peeple, about 7 in the Morning, and killed and fcalped his Wife, and carried off two of his Children one i Boy about i Years of Age the other a Girl, a bout 2 Years old. Une Salmon, a bhoemaKer, is milling but as he was old, I imagine they have only carried him off to get Intelligence, and then will murder him. The Diftrefs and Confufion of the People flying to the Forts, with the moll valu able of their tffecti, is not to be exprelled.
