"You can always, count on me as one of you standing together shoulder to shoulder, as you did during the war." Dawes Is Cheered The American Legion was not a political organization, said General Pershing, but it was especially important that its members see that men in their community were upstanding Americans and not slackers or demogogues. This observation by the National commander on a question that has agitated the membership of the Legion, was received with long applause. Vice President Charles G.

Dawes, who delivered the principal address at to day's session, also received an enthusiastic reception. The Vice President was cheered when he said that "if the American government is to be a success the American people must vote." He received another cheer when he said: "Personally, I believe that the primary system should be largely abolished." UARRISDURG TELEGRAPH OCTOBER 12, 1926 't Advertising Guarantees Full Value For Each Dollar By JOSEPH SCHMIDT ASD SMITH B. QUAYLE it THIS age it is almost impossible to secure something for nothing legitimately, but we all want to get our money's worth. Most of the large stores in this country recocnize these two facts, and are therefore satisfied! to make a net profit of 6 per cent, or less on the merchandise they sell. A greater profit than this is not good business. As a rule, these large stores which ad vertise are in business to stay, and they are therefore vitallv interested in getting good will and making friends.

Thev do not wish to earn excessive profits, but rather to build up a large volume of business. 1 1 No so long ago many firms were and price of the merchandise is interested largely In the profit on each individual sale. Some of them were in the habit of marking goods to make big profits, with the idea that the public would pay the price and never know the differ ence. That day has passed. Now they mark their goods carefully and closely to make a small but consistent earning.

It would surprise most people to know how carefully most stores check up on their own prices. They are constantly on the alert to make sure that their wares are sold to the public at as low a price as possible. Of course, buyers and managers are only human, and therefore apt to make occasional mistakes in buying. For this reason, the merchandise manager of a store checks them up and satis fies himself that the quality, style correct A buyer in a large establishment at one time purchased several thousand dollars' worth of handkerchiefs at thirteen cents each. They were good material, and he decided to retail them at twenty five cents each.

The merchandise manager took the matter up with the buyer, and after they had talked it over, they decided that the public, and not the store, should get the benefit ot the low cost. As a result, the handkerchiefs were retailed at less than twenty cents each, and the public was able to buy excellent handkerchiefs at an unusually low price. The policy of every advertiser to day is to give the public the benefit of every concession possible, and to give his customers good value every day in the year. He does not want to encourage The Live Store" 1A coats the Idea that it is possible to get bargains only at certain times, but Instead, he wishes to give the buyer a full dollar's worth ot merchandise tor r. dollar whenever be buys.

To do this he uses advertising, the short cut to popularity without which it would take years to even begin to build a successful business. This is the eighth of a series ot fifty two weekly articles by Joseph Schmidt, tor many years advertising manager of a large Cincinnati department store, and Smith B.
