It's not part of the WB's fall schedule, but perhaps they want us to decide for ourselves just why that might be. Park Overall, whose resume includes the very successful Empty Nest, stars as a single mother starting over as a late-night talk-radio host in Philadelphia. (CC) ON THE WEB Now the poor souls who for some reason still want to parade their dirty laundry in front of millions of viewers argue back and forth from the comfort of their chairs, preferring that to tossing them. The debates have been vigorous (and, as always, stupid), but with less profanity than in the past.

And no more bum-rushing from the wings. The majority of male guests dress in ties and slacks, as opposed to the former garb of jeans and T-shirts. The women, for the most part, are attired more demurely in dresses and slacks. Burly Steve, the so-called "director of security," now sits in the front row, rather than breaking up fights on the stage. Fans of the show might prefer this less-violent, still-outrageous incarnation to the compromise that had been struck at the height of the controversy, when episodes were clumsily edited to remove any violence, or camera shots were limited to far-away views of onstage melees and quick cuts to surprised audience members.

When Paula Zahn joined cable's Fox News Channel in March, she was excited about returning to spot news reporting after several years of toiling a long stint at CBS that including six years on CBS This Morning. She got her wish, reporting on everything from the war in Kosovo to the death of John Kennedy Jr. What Zahn, who had been also anchoring newscasts for the network, didn't expect was to be hosting her own issues-focused hour so soon into her tenure with Fox News. "The exciting thing for me is that after all these years in the business, I've never had the opportunity to help create a show," says Zahn, 43. Zahn's chance came when former judge Catherine Crier, whose The Crier Report is on weeknights at 10 p.m., announced several weeks ago that she was leaving Fox News for Court TV.

Zahn isn't expected to take over the space until late summer. In the meantime, she's busy figuring out how the show should be crafted, although she does have some ideas. One of them is that, unlike Crier's program, Zahn's will react to whatever headline story happens to break at the time. "I think if the show is to have a In all, four shows change places: Just Shoot Me moves to the all-important lead-off spot at 8 p.m. and the surging Will Grace goes from 9:30 into the 9 p.m.

slot. 3rd Rock from The Sun moves back a half-hour to 8:30 p.m. and the new sitcom The Mike O'Malley Show originally slated for 8:30 p.m. will air at 9:30 p.m. Dateline remains at 10 p.m.

"We sort of see this as 'us versus ABC' for who's going to have the dominant comedy block on the night," said Preston Beckman, NBC's executive vice president of program planning and scheduling. "Perception-wise, this has always been considered ABC's night." STILL FREAKY: Something is missing from some current episodes of The Jerry Springer Show all of that chair-throwing, fist-flinging and unwanted disrobing. The freakshows are still on parade, usually with the same theme guests revealing they've been cheating on their mates, either with the opposite sex or their own. But they're no longer fighting with each other, a component of the show that garnered high ratings, protests and government near-intervention. Paula Zahn different direction, it is going to be hard news-driven, and we're going to build a very heavy interviewing component into the show.

But we want the show to be very reactive to the news," says Zahn. TUESDAYS ON NBC: In a rare pre-season move, NBC is changing its Tuesday fall schedule, shifting two high-profile series to take direct aim at ABC's successful sitcom lineup.
