II Neiv Yorkers as Colonial Characters SUNDAY. HEWS, NOVEMBER 6, 1921, uy Your QUITE A JOB TO PAINT MANHATTAN BRIDGE LIKE NEW (Pictures oa paffc 25.) The Manhattan Bridge, second Jargest structure of its kind in the country, is being repainted, the biggest job of that nature Father Knickerbocker has undertaken. By utilizing every working day possible, the work will be completed about the first of August, 1922. We Will Sell nearly a quarter oi a million aoi-lars, the labor cost being estimated at $180,000, and that of the material at $60,000. Seventy-five men, practically the entire staff of painters of the Department of Plant and Structures, are engaged in the task.

It will take them a total of 300 working days or more before the last brush stroke is made. Four Great Cables. More than 23,000 gallons of paint will be consumed in the work. There are 60,000 tons steel to be covered. The two towers which must be painted inside and out rise 336 feet above high water.

There are four great cables to be covered. Each of these is slightly more than 3,200 feet long and twenty-one inches in diameter. From the western end of the bridge at Canal. Street, Manhattan, to its eastern end at Nassau Street, Brooklyn, the main structure runs 0,855 feet, with a width over all of 122 feet 6 inches. The main span of the bridge, 1,470 feet between towers, is no place for a painter inclined to be dizzy, for at the center of the'span the workmen are 149 feet above the East River, and at the towers are 138 feet above the high tide mark.

One-Quarter Finished. The work of painting the nearest neighbor of the Brooklyn Bridge began about three months ago and it is estimated is about a quarter done. The work for the next three months or so will go on much more slowly, for the winter cold and storms will materially reduce the number of working days in which the task can go forward. The great East River bridges need a thorough coating of new paint from end to end and from watermark to tower top once every seven or eight years. It is also some 600 feet longer than the Manhattan Bridge. At the peak of the rush hours the bridge is crowded to capacity. It was designed to cary more than a quarter of a million persons in each direction in an hour. It is to keep the bridge safe for these multitudes, and not merely to beautify it, that Father Knickerbocker is spending nearly $250,000 and a year's time. N.
