We learn that an exprefs to the Gover The dory of the capture of the Wafp, Capt. Blakely, by the Lacedemonian, is evidently not true, as a letter appears in the Charledon Courier of the 5th December, from a gentleman who was captured on the 26th November, by the barges of that frigate, which is totally filent refpedU ing the Wafp, though it fpeaks of other captures. An Eoglifh paper dates, that Gen.Rcfs was to have been created a Knight of the Bath for the capture of Wadiington. On' the receipt of the official news announcing the capture of that city, in England, def patches were immediately fent off to their different AmbafTadors at all the courts of Europe, communicating the information. The bill authorifing the Prefident of the United States, by and with the advice and confent of the Senate, to appoint one Vice Admiral nd two Rear Admirals, and fixing their compenfation, has paffed tbeSe nite.

The Meffrs. Brown's, in New. York, are collecting carpenters for that purpofe, fome of whom are already on their way, i Mr. Hammerfly, late commander of the Franklin, has been exchanged, and has arrived at Norfolk. He reports that Admi ral Cochburn had arrived in the Bay, and that the force lately in the Rappahannock amounted to one thoufand or twelve hun dred men.

It is dated in the Boflon Evening Gazette of the 10th ind. that many of the Eadern Banks have Hopped paying fpecie for their bills. It appears that the enemy have defended the Rappahannock river, after committing their codomary depredations. At Tappahannock, they burnt the goal and coort boufe, and a valuable warehoufe, the property of Mr. Lawrence Mufe.

Thomas Croft, alias John Rodgers, and James Robinfoo, alias James Elmire, were executed on Thurfday lad, at FortMifHin, agreeably to the fentence of a Court martial. Jacob File, who was fentenced to be (hot, was reprieved. Extraft of a letter to the editor of the York Evening Pod, from a friend, dated Bofton, December 10. It is dated in to day's Centinel, that the Prefident has requeded the Governor of this commonwealth to order out 5,000 mi litia for fome important expedition. This is not quite correcl.

The Secretary of War has notified the Governor that Gen. Dearborn has been ordered to call out that number of the militia of the date, who are to aft under the immediate command of Ma jor Geni King, of the militia, and has re queded the Governor to provide the necef fary funds for their pay and fupport, on the promife of the General Government to repay whatever (hall be advanced. He af fared the Governor that the Government had provided ample means for replenifh ing the treafury in the courfe of 60 days. What meafures will be taken on this very extraordinary order and requed, of couife, is not yet known. This however is certain this date has no money to fpare to be riflced on fuch fpeculations.

The money already expended this feafon by the date, befides voluntary contributions and labour, folely for the defence of the date, is about 800,000 dollars in fpecie. The objeel of the projected expedition is fuppofed to be jo expel the Britifli from Cadine, an objeft which every body acquainted with that country koows cannot be accomplifhed. The above you may rely on." AMERICAN PRISONERS. Mr. Mitchill, American agent for pti fonrrs, arrived at New York from Halifax, dates, that about the 20th November between 4 and 500 American prifoners were fent to England, and that there remained upwards of 900.

He mentions that they are all cll furnifhed with food and lodging, and are genarally in excel lent health. Of the whole number of prifoners at Halifax, not more than 30 were in the hofpital when the agent failed. Mr. Mitchill was not permitted to appoint an agent in his room, but was allowed to name two of the American officers to vifit the prifoners daily, and to furnifh them (as the 8gent had formerly done) with any ar tides neceffary or their health and com fort. Among the paffengers from Halifax are, Mr Buchanan, Mr.

Dorfey, and Mr. Get ting, of Baltimore, who ere captured during the late attack upon that city. Gen. Mafon, our agent for the exchange of prifoners at Wadiington, had negociated an arrangement for the liberation of all the citizens of Baltimoie ho were made prifoners at that time. But as the knowledge of this arrangement reached Halifax only one day before the cartel failed, the other gentlemen could not prepare themfelves in feafon to return by this conveyance.

From iht Plattfiurg Republican, Dec. f. is reported that the Bririfh are con tracing for fevera) thoufand fleigbi and for 10,000 Buffalo (kins and that a win ttt campaign is the order of the day An It is very probable" that Sir George Pre vod will attempt to remove the boundary to Crown Point, while the lake is covered with ice, Every exertion ought to be made to prevent fuch a difader. The enemy ha ving the command of Lake Ontario, will doubtlefs direct all hjs energies to this quar ter, in order to gain a like afcendancy on this Lake, onlefj the idea of carrying the war into the United States has been abandoned. The enemy cannot get tb immediate command of this lake by building, hence the probability of fomething being attempted this vvinter.

General Powers, with the 27th regiment, about 800, has left Montreal for Halifax. And their place is fupplied by more than 1000 troops which have arrived in Canada, during the lad two months. Captain Downie publicly declared, while on the lde La Motte, in the hearing of 20 or 30 American citizens, that in 30 minutes, after the fird fire, he would be on board the American (hip Saratoga. The (i'd fire from the Saratoga proved fatal to Captain Downie. DUEL.

On the 22d ult. a duel was fought near Buffalo, between Dade, Surgeon of the 18th. infantry, and Capt. Paxton, of th 13th, in which the former. was killed, the latter mortally wounded.

SOLID APPLAUSE. In addition to the farm on Cumberland Head, prefented by the date of Vermont, and the lot in Albany given by the corpo ration of that city, the legidature of New York have bellowed on Commodore Mac denoogh 1000 acres of land in Sterling, Cayuga County. This is certainly a JJer ling reward of his didinguidied merit, which we hope will be conferred in.every (imilar cafe. And commodore Perry ought for the fame realons to be complimented with a fmall town (hip on the border of Erie. Columbian.
