DAYTON DAILY NEWS SOCCER women ready for tournament challenge 10D SATURDAY, JUNE 19, 1999 U.S 1 any, at least. She symbolizes just how ready the U.S. women feel they are to meet the intense challenges of the next three weeks, just how far they have come. Beginning today with the Americans' game against Denmark at Giants Stadium, the third Women's World Cup will be played at sites all over the country, culminating with the final July 10 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif. The 16-team field is separated into four groups.

The teams will play a round-robin within the group, with the top two advancing to the quarterfinals. It is being billed as the largest women's sporting event in history. More than a half-million tickets have been sold. Two games, the U.S. opener and the final, will be shown nationally by ABC.

The rest will be carried on cable. And the favorite is The United States. That's right. This isn't the U.S. men's team, which finished 32nd in last summer's World Cup and continues to lag behind the rest of the worldThis is the U.S.

women's team, a true powerhouse, ripe with veterans, The third Women's World Cup will be played at sites all over the country. By Nicholas J. Cotsonika KNIGHT RIDOER EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. The memory is crisp and clear for Briana Scurry. At the Atlanta Olympics three summers ago, she took the field with her teammates and then stood stunned at what she saw: lights and cameras and fans, lots of them, all there to catch the action of the gold medal-winning U.S.

women's soccer team. "I was in awe," said Scurry, the starting U.S. goalkeeper. "Seeing all those camera bulbs flashing and all that, I took a minute to get myself prepared. I thought it was amazing that people were coming out in droves to see us play.

"And Scurry is a veteran of such situations, cool and confident and maybe even cocky. She has no fear or doesn't appear to have NEXT GAME: 3 p.m. today, U.S. vs. Denmark at Giants ABC ranked ahead of China and Germany and Brazil and Norway.

And that makes everything different. Showing up with soccer shoes on won't be enough, especially with the tournament here in the land of the free-to-criticize. Big, boisterous crowds will be packing patriotic punch, of course. But they'll be packing big-time expectations, too. for one, don't feel nervous about it, because I've played in front of large crowds," Scurry said.

"We know that all these people are here to support us. That's exactly what is going to carry us all the way through. Is there pressure? Sure. But we have to live with it." No nation has a better record in women's soccer than the United States, which didn't have a national team before 1985. The Americans have compiled a 144-22-8 record (.851) this decade.

Their record in the first two World Cups was a combined 10-1-1, best in the world. 1 WOMEN'S WORLD CUP SCHEDULE GROUP A SCHEDULE At East Rutherford, N.J. Denmark at United States, 3 p.m. SUNDAY At Pasadena, Calif. North Korea vs.
