ftreets Tor the extinguilhmentof fire, (hoald any happen. The bombardment continued till evening, On Friday morning tbe bomb fliip renewed her operations a little befote fun rife, while the Ramilici and were warping in. At 8 o'clock the frigate open ed her fire, and was fooo followed by the Ramilks. At this time the cannon were ordered to be removed to the north end of the town, where they would have been fer viceable, if an attempt had been made to land under cover of the fhips. This was a very hazardous fervice, as the party would be entirely expofed to the enemy's fire Volunteers in fufHcient number inftantly offered their fervices among them were upwards of twenty of the Norwich artiljc ry.

Thecommand of the party was intruded to lieut. Lathrop, of that corps. marched to the battery and brought off the pieces without the fmalleft accident; exhibiting all the tfeadinefs which characterizes veteran foldiers. This tremendous cannonade and bom bardment continued till nearly noon, when it ceafed and at about 4 o'clock the fhips hauled off to their formtr anchorage. During the fucceeding night a large force was kept on guard, in the expectation and hope that a landing would be attempted.

The militia, during this afflicting fcene, difcovered the very bed difpofition, and were eager to take revenge of the enemy or facrifice their lives in the ccnted. It may be confidered miraculous, that the feveral attacks, while fo many weie expofed to this terrible and protracted bombardment and cannonade, not a perfon was killed, and but 5 or 6 wounded, and thofe (lightly. Among the wounded is lieut. Hough, of the drafted miticia. On Saturday morning the emmy relin quifhed the hope of burning the town, weighed anchor, and proceeded up Fifher'a ifland found.

Tne volunteers who fo glorioufly fought in the battery, deferve the thanks of their country. No men could have dene better. Their example will have tbe happitft in fluence. About 40 buildings are more or lefs injured, .3 or 10 eflentially fo and 2 or 3 tnay becnnfidered as ruined. The damage was principally done by the brig Many (hells did not explode, feveral uereextin guifhtd.

The Congteve rockets, which were frightful at full, foon loll their terrors, and efficted little. The inhabitants, fearing another attack, hae not returned to their dwellings; and their defolate fituation calls loudly upon the philanthrophy of their fcllqw citizens. If a brief (hould be granted for collections in the churches of the l)t, we trull very effential aid will be furmlhed. Nineteen twentieths of the inhabitants, it is faid, have no other property than their buildings. A Nantucket man has been on board the Britifh fleet to redeem hi boit, and learnt that the.Defpatch had 2 rnen killed and 13 wounded her lofs was undoubtedly much greater.

The Oice in Filher's ifland found yeflerday, we understand, confided of the Superb, Ramilies, Paftolus sylph, Def patch, Nirarod, and Tcrrour bomb (hip WASHINGTON HALL. The following addrefs was delivered by Genrr.il Wharton, upon laying the corner Hone of the Wafliington Hall. In a cavity in the centre of the (lone were depofited an enamelled plate, inferibed with the name of the building the elate of its foundation tbe dale of the incor poration of the Society the names of the Prefidcnt, Vice Prefident, fenior members of the building committee, and the architect and a dedication of the edifice to the memory of Walhington, with the dates of hit birth and death two copies of the conditution and bye laws of the Society with WaQimgton'i Farewell Add'efs, one in the Englifti and the other in the German language to gether with a variety of coins and other' articles. The Address. funis and Fellow Members of the IVaJbtngton Benevolent Society, We are convened, at this awful crifis of our national affairs, to lay tbe corner Hone of an edifice, which is to be dedicated to, and to bear the name of WASHINGTON, our political father arid friend, whofe public virtues and private charities will be remembered as long as gratitude is an inmate of the human bread; and here let me add, that had his maxims been puifued, and his example followed, we (hould have avoided the prefect ruinous and difgraceful war one of whofe attendants will be ad increafe: of applicants for our fympaihy and relief.

Not two years' have elapfed do ce this aflbciation commenced its ufeful labours; without fundi, without fydem, and, I may almoft add, at times without hope; drug gling with innumerable difficulties, ithas at length, under the approving fmiles of Divine Providence, attained a liability, from much good may a rife. "Let us, my brethren, purfue the laudable courfe we have begun continue to wipe the tear from the eye of forrow, comfort and allevi ate the thorny pillow of death, and aid and cherifh the grief worn widow and orphan complying with, as far as oor limited means will admit of, the holy requisition 01 our blcfTed Redeemer I was naked and ye cloathed me, hungry and ye gave me food, tick and in prifon, and ye vifited roe." Purfuing this courfe, an approving conference (God's Monitor in man) will be our happy reward. TO THE PUBLIC FIFTY DOLLARS Reward. ELOPED yesterday, from my bed and board, my wife Lockey, alias Kachel, aged about 27 she is trili, slender, of a fair complexion, and has lost her front teeth. It is supposed she went off with a French Fencing Master Barber, named PHILIP HOUSSEY, aged about 35 he is about 5 feet 8 inches high, well made, has short brown hair, and speaks broken English.

He had on, when he went away, a light seersucker coatee, boots, and pantaloons. He robbed me of a considerable sum of money, and took all the cloathing apparel he could lay his hands on, not even sparing those belonging to the child, which my wife has left behind. I will pay Fifty Dollars, as a reward, to any person or persons, who will detect and lodge him in any prison in the United States. 4 The above named HoussEYjiasJeen, a short time back, confined in Boston prison for gross misdemeanour, and has been three times in our Bridewell lately lie brought from Boston, to this city, a nother man's wife, and has left her in great distress, with two children. He being a noted villain, particularly in disturbing the peace of mind of married families, I hope, and beg in the name of humanity, of all families, as well as all others, that they will aid and assist me in detecting him.

It is supposed they have gone towards Philadelphia. Charles M'Carthey, NO. 204, Water street. N. B.
