I ,1 1. I i THE EVENING POST. WEDNESDAY EVENING, JANUARY 6 Tbe clown who stopped tingle hole in a aiert tod thea wondered that the water ahould continue to ma through, might hare pasted lor a profound statesman' if be bad lired at the present day and had applied the same wisdom to the science of politics. There are many persons, wise politicians in their own opinion and that of their friends, who are for making; tbe public sieve water tight in the same way. Many excellent persons.

who yoted to prevent a second election of Mr. Van Buren, and to place in the" Presi dential chair a candidate who had pledged Aimseu not to accept a second nomination, so doubt that they had done their country great service and effectually barred up all the arenuea to exec a tire corruption It would be duel, perhaps, to hjiit to ihese men who are now enjoying the applause ot their own consciences; that aPresidfntof tbe United States might do as much lor a favorite successor or for an other man ot his own psrty, as be could do for bimseli, i( he is onprincipled enough to resort to corrupt means to secure his own re election, he will allow the same means to be used by any of bis cabinet, or will, be in ueneed by bis advisers to employ them lor the advantage of his friends. Let any man read the following extract oi a letter from the Washington correspond dent of the Charleston Courier, a whig paper, and he will see that the sieve is not yet wa tertigbt, notwithstanding that one ol its innumerable openings has been carefully atopped up The appointment of Mr. Webster, as Secretary of Slate fire reneral satisfaction. It does not follow, however, that because be It prtmicr, ba will exercise a predominant Influence la the Cabinet of General Harrison.

Mr. Clay to be the master spirit there. As tint designated successor of Gensral MarrUoo. ba will endeavor, no doubt, and with entire success, to shape the policy of the Harrison administration in accordance with bis owe views, and thus render bis own administration a continuation of General Hsrri aoe's." Mr, Clay is thus, according to the state xaent of his friends, to control the new ad ministration He is to have tbe predomin not influence and supervision of all that is nominally done by the president.7i to have the advannjjtfcf umeans for ee Harrison resigns. The water is only stops ped at one opening that it may pass through the other openings.

All this is precisely what might have been anticipated by any person giving tbe least reflection to the subject. Tarty manoeuvres are not managed in this country by single individuals, but ty associations of men who understand each other and act in common. Exclude one ot these Irom office and the office tails to bis fellow; that is all the diflV. rence you effect by the exclusion the same means will still be used. Parties hunt in pack a like wolves, and of what avail is it to muzzle a single animal, when a thousand more, fiercer, mayhap and stronger than he, LTadywithopen jaws tony upon their prey There are but two rational methods of pre Tenting a president from resorting to impro per means to secure his re election.

First, to elect a virtuous, conscientious and enlighw ened man, who has the sagacity to see that the most effectual mode of obtaining the public favor ia good conduct in office. Secondly, to limit the patronage and means of influ ence possessed by tbe Executive in such a manner as to leave it destitute of the power to do mischief. The first method makes a resort to official corruption unlikely, the second makes It impossible. Thb OovcsNom's Msrsios. The message of Governor Seward waa received at this office about twelve e'elock ibie dsy loo Ista to be inserted in our paper.

It is a long and not vsty lively document, occupying eight closely printed columns in the Albsay Evenin Journal. Tbe Message takes ground in favor of go'mg on with the enlargement of lbs Etie Cansl, and exs presses a hope that the cost will not much exceed twenty three millions of dollars. Ia regard to ihe ol question, Governor Seward com plains that be bss been misrepresented, but does not attempt to sbow in what respect. Tna two papera which follow are signed by every member of tbe Grand Jury, which finished its invee tigatioae on Ssturdsy. They are favorable in lha highest decree to Mr.

Stevenson, and particularly to hia character for honour and veracity. Ten of the seventeen persons of whom tha Grand Jury waa composed were whig. How this Grand Jury, after having so thoronghly investigated lbs character of Mr. Stevenson, and after beiag so fully convinced of his unimpeachable veracity, should bsva refused to bring in a bill against Glcatwonh on his statement, supported by Glen wort's ob confession, can be explained upon no other principle than a desire to screen their political fiicnds from sxposure snd punishment. Mr. Garland, that tbe work, which be bad ordered to ba to those gentlemen, waa ordered by the House, to the election of Blair and Riveey and at a time he waa authorised to employ euch parties as thought proper. Mr.

Mr. Anderson, from tbe Committee on Naval Af reported a bill in relation to the Navy Pension which waa twice read and made ihe order of thedsy for one day next week. This bill ia an important one, and should be passed ith aa little delay as possible.

Its paaaage will re all of the really meritorious to the advantagea the Pension Fund. It explains and modifies tha of 1600, by which the fund waa created. By this act, those officers, seamoa.and others, who have wounded iu the service of tbe United States, so to be actually disabled, are to be pensioned, and others. By the construction placed upon the actof 1800, by the Commissioners, there have been the pension I fund for years, Commodore Ap Catcsby Jones, Commodore Downs, Commodore Morris, aud numerous others of the Navy, drawing pensions of from 1300 to 1503 the year, and yet tbe aame gentlemen are iu actual service, receiving the pay of a captain, namely, 3500the year. It ia drain on tha Pension Fund that Las exhausted and tbe evil must and will be remedied.

I am ins formed, however, by one of the gentlemen on tbe Naval Committee, that there is a concerted plan among many of the officers of the Navy to defeat new bill and he says that he ia not aura but will be succestfuL It is hoped and be lievtd however, that Commodores Jones, Downs, Morris, and others, will not aid the opposition. The of 1800 surely never centemplaied that Corn mo dorea in full pay and in actual service, or on half pay, should be ectuled to pensions. vara, me select committee the false translation of tbe Spanish words "nagrea ladino," in the matter of the pspers of the Spanish schooner A mistad, reported tbat the erroneous trans lation waa made by the proof reader of the Globe office. The report waa accepted, and the Committee Another message, relating to the Caroline stfair, wss received from the President, which was read. The first paper waa from Mr.

Fox, tbe British Minister, to Mr. Forsyth, and waa dated Ihe 29th of December. It waa an animated, and perhapa a somewhat discourteous paper, and spoke in very warm terms of condemnation against tbe action of the municipality of the Slate of New York, in the case of McLeod. Tbat Mr. Fox may have the benefit of hia own labor, I refer you to ihe document itaelf, and you will arrive at your own conclusions.

Mr. Forsyth's reply, dated tha 31st of Decembei' is somen hat tart and after very briely telling Mr Fox that bedoea not appear to understand the ones lion at issue, closes with assurances of my distinguished consideration, The correspondence, in the language of our plain republican friends of Iowa, might be called aomewhat wolfish. It is, however, dignified, on both sides, and will not, I hope, lead to sorry or wolfish consequences. Mr. Fillmore, of New Yoik, moved that the Mess ssge and papers be referred to the Committee on Fos re en Afliir, and that ECC0 extra copieebe printed.

Before he took bis seat he indulged a few remarks ca lied for perhaps ty tbe relation he bears to the owners of tbe ill fated steamer Caroline and the Canadian patriots. It will be recollected that Mr. Fd Imore represents the Buffalo district; and, like many of hia reighbore, sympathised with tha border warriors of 1838. I reported his speech at length, and tegret very much that it is quite too long to ba enclosed in tbisdirpstcb. He gave a full history of tbe capture and burning of the Caroline.

Mr Pickens cf Sooth Carolina, Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, deemed the matter one of great delicacy, and, therefore, as caution and prudence were neceesary in managing such matters, he hoped the pspers would be referred with as little debate aa practicable. Mr, John W. Davis, of Indiana, made a very ardent speech on the occasion, and evinced great hoa tility toward England. Mr. F.

Granger madea few remarks, happily conceived and firm bnt prudent, and well cal culated to gratify hia constituents, and thea Mr. Weller, of Ohio, being of opinion that quite enough of patriotism and eloquence, and martial seal and spirit, had been blown off "for one day," des msnded the previous queation, which being seconded, the rasin question waa put, and Ihe papere were re lured. Although it must be admitted that this case of McLeod looks a little squally, and reminds one of the Jonathan Rolbina excitement, it arousea one to notice how easily it calls out all the fire and fury of our patriots end demagogues. As in all other cases of the kind that look on the surface a little tall petrtith, so in this, it cannot be touched without exciting an extraordinary quantity of double distilled patnow ism (on Ihe part of those who "look at my next patriotism that would, by ihe way, in tha event of a war, owe out of the enda of their fingers, aadid lha courage of Bob Acres at the sight of the pistols of Lucius O'Trigger. In tbe Senate, petitions were received and Mr.

D. W. For the Evening Pott; Dt. Robert Watts, Jr. delivered a very interesting lecture, last evening, at the Mechanics and Tradesmen's General Society in Croaby a tree on the pro ceases of prespiration and circulation.

He described the process by which the blood is carried through the system by means of the arteries, iu return through the veins, and ita renovation by the lungs. The entire surface of the cellular substance of the lunge, he said was very much greater than tbat of the whole exterior surface of the The quantity of air taken mat a single ordinary respiration, ha said, waa about a pint at a long breath about two pints snd a hah, and the greatest quantity inhaled at any time by singers, is said to bs about seven pints all which proves tbat our steamboats, public and every other place where numbers congregate, are scandalously ill ventilated. 1 Jje mentioned that in bleeding, persons frequently by mistake compress the arm loo tightly, so as to stop the current of both arteries and veins, whereas tha latter only should be closed a fact worthy to be borne in mind by because rnarantaneojs bleeding is often essential to the preservation of fife. His lecture was illustrated by many preparations, and deliveied iu a very clear and perspicuous manv ner. Dr.

SoccEssrvL Fabmino. The Farmer's Cabinet relates an instance ef the most successful farming we have heard of lor some time. It is of an olj) practical, bard working farmer in tbe neighborhood of Amherst, N. who commenced in tho world as a day laborer, and who, notwithstanding be haa at various times sustained heavy pecuniary losses in tne investment oi nia iunas, is now worth at leaat one hundred thousand dollars. Wa make the fol lowing extract from the article in the Cabinet Bal timore American.

Thia man, when thirty yeara of age, by tho avails of hia industry added to a email legacy, was enabled to puicbase and pay, in part, for a farm of one hundred and thirty acrce of land, one hundred of which waa under cultivation, but ia a very low state. The farm is altogether upland, with a soil composed of loam, clsy and sand, in the chief of which the latter preponderates, the former being least considerable. When he commenced farming be adopted a particular system of rotation, to which be has im plicitly adhered from that lime to the present, which as forty yeara, and bis success is the beet comment on tbe worth of tbe experiment. His mode was aa follows having divided bis term into eight fields of equal size, aa near as possible, Ihree of those fields were sowed with wheat each year, one with rye, one planted with corn, two in clover, and one an open fallow, ou which coin bad been raised ihe year previous. One of the two clover fields ie kept for mowing, tbe other for pasture, both of which are ploughed as soon after tbe harvest ss possible, and prepared for wheat in the fall.

All tbe manure which is made on Ihe farm for one year is bsuled in the spring on tbe field intondi ed lor open fallow, which ia then ploughed, and after one or two cross ploughmgs through the sum mer, Is also aowed with wheat In the fall. This field on which tbe rye ia sown is that from which a crop of wheat haa been taken the aame year, asd which had yielded three crops. Corn is planted on ihe Geld from whieh rye bad been taken tbe year previous, tbe stubbles of which are ploughed down in tbe tall. Clover seed ia sown early in tbe spring on two of the wheat fields, those which have been most recently manured. By thia method, eaeb field yields three crops ot wheat, two of clover.

one of rye, and one of corn, every eight years. liico neia, in me mean ume, nas lain an open fallow, and received heavy dressing of manure, perhaps at an average ot fifteen lour botee Joads per acre. Hia crop of wheat is eeldom less than fifteen hundred bushels, but often much more. His average rye crop ia about four hundred and fil ty bushels, and hia corn crop annually ebom five hundred bushels all which grain, at ibe present low prices, wouia amount to more inan two thousand dollars annually, and at former prices to doub le tbat amount, and but tarm is withal very ncbly improved." Ababian Litbbatsbb. Amongst the riches of Arabian literature, ia a manuscript by tbe Arab historian Ibn Kbaldoun, entitled History at the Arabs and Berbers," which throws great light the customs and institutions of Northern Afiica In tha Middle Ages, and contains a highly interesting account ot the existence, or and migrations of the aboriginal tribes, wbo had been driven bv the zeal of the holy wara far from the land of the Prophet, Tbe Minister ef War having been informed that I his msnuscrtpt, of which France hid only an imperfect copy, was to be found at Constantinople, had lately a copy made of it, which wa presented lo the Bibliotbeque Royals.

Several parts of other copies of the same manuscript were found at Con alantma, a few hours after tbe taking ol that town in 1837, and have been forward sd to Paris. It was called the Great Missourian, and ia the skeleton of tbe greats eat animal ever known. It was found about two hundred miles west ot this place, in thia 8 ate, by a Getman. It measures to the top of the libs 16 feet high, is 32 feet long, bss two tusks tbst are from tea to twelve inches in diameter, and are 16 feet apart. Tbe bead and tusks weigh eleven hundred pounds. The joints ot the knee in tbe lore lege are inverted, so that he bends tbe knee the contrary way from any other animal.

He appears to have been webfooted, has no hoofs, bnt toes about eight or tenlocbea long. Tbe owner haa computed its' ante, in comparison to the size ot an ox here that weighs one thousand pounds, and be ia just one hundred times larger than the ox, so that he mnst have weighed when alive, one hundred thousand pounds, (fifty tons.) 1 should think he would have required five or six buffaloes tor breakfast The six mus ciana wbo play at the exhibition of tha animal, sit upin his ribs. 'Tbe owner has been offered 120,000 cash for biro. He leaves in a few daya for New Orteana, from thence to New Yoik, thence to Europe, It is worth a good fortune for any six men, bnt the own cr ill not sell it Troy Whig. RatlxoaD Accidibt.
