RETFORD MARCH FAIR. The usual March fair was opened by the Mayor and Corporation in the ordinary formal way at nine clock on Saturday morning. The show of horses was extraordinarily numerous, particularly of those for agricultural purposes. Grove stcaei, set apart for the purpose, seemed failed, and dealers were nreaaut fa of SHEFFIELD BIRMINGHAM. FBOU ore OWN REPORTER.

During the past two seasons. matches have been played by the bneintia Associatn with a tej.ru selected under the auspices of the Birmingham Club, but us it was this year found that an association had been formed in that town, which was supported by a large number of the clubs in tne district, it was considered by the committee tnat it would be more proper to arrange the ti itnre with them, and the present match, which was played on Saturday, was the first meeting of the two associations. 'The ground selected foi the match is situate in Witton Lane, Aton. The weather during the morning, thougn very coid, was bright, but just at the hour hrtcd for the commencement of the match a slight fall oi snow took place: it only lasted a few minutes, but was sufficient to render the ground, which otherwise would have been in excellent cond.tion, rather greasy. There was.a very good attendance, upwards of bOOO spectators being present.

The match throughout was oi a very pleasant description, and although from the commencement it was evident that the Shethelders were considerably the stronger team, some very good play was shewn by their opponents, the crossing of the torwur-is being at times very effective. For ourselves, we think we have never seen the Sheffield forwards piay better, some reaily sound unselfish passing play being exhibited, which was quite a treat to witness, and such it was evidently deemed by the spectators, who appeared highly pleased with the skill of the visitors. The following were the teams: SHEf field. F. Stacey, goal; E.

Buttery and J. House-lev, backs; W. E. Clegg and J. Huuter, hali-backs; J.

C. Clegs iCaptaiui, A. W. Cursham, G. B.

Marples, A. Woodcock, T. H. Sorby, and J. Tomiin-son, forwards; Mr.

W. Dickenson, umpire. Bikmi.ngham. J. Carson (captain) goal T.

Batler and E. J. Jones, backs; ti. V. Chapman and A.

E. Darnell, half backs; U. C. Goodyear. J.

Wvun, W. Sprott, J. H. Edwards, K. Morley, and J.

B. 1 forwards; Mr. S. Durban, umpire; referee, Mr. J.

W. Knight. The Sheffield captain won the toss, and at four clock Mr. Carson, for Birmingham, set the hall in motion. It was quickly taken down to tho Birmingham lines by a neat run by Cursham; but Ivamsev, Sprott, and vim, by good crossing, brought it some distance back, when their efforts were checked by W.

E. Clegg, who sent tho ball back to the other end, and immediately afterwards Shefheld obtained their hist corner kick, but it was put behind by J. C. Clegg. Tomlinson got possession, and placing the ball past Chi who missed his kick at it, Cursham obtained tho first goal for Sheffield, at 4.5.

No booner had play been restarted than J. C. Clegg, Marples, Sorby, and Cursham, by good crossing, again took the leather to the Birmingham end, and Tomlinson had a shot, which was stopped by the goalkeeper, but he did not get it away, and Sorby and Tomlinson, coming in with a simultaneous rush, carried tho ball with them throagh the goal for the second time. On again kicking off, some good combined play on the part ot Marples, J. C.

Clegg, and Cursham put the Birmingham fortress once more in peril but tho siege was raided, and Sprott and Ooodyear by a conceited run go', the ball near the other end. It was, however, well returned by Buttery, and after good play by Marples and Woodcock, iiamsey attempted to get away, but his inte-ntious were promptly trutrated by W. E. Clegg. Tomlinson next became troublesome, but Chapman with a good kick sent tho ball away, only, however, to allow Cursham to get possession, and he after some neat dribbling passed to Woodcock, w' placed the bail nicely in front of the Birmingham goal, and Sorby coming up had little difficulty in placing it between the posts again at 4.15.

'1 bree goals in a quarter of an hour was rather hot work, and the Birmingham men set themselves to work to try and improve matters, and L'hapinuu and Butler (back) displayed some good kicking, after which liawleyEdwards had a rather long shot at the Shefheld goal, but as no one was up, the goal-keeper had little difficulty in disposing of it, and Tomlinson and Sorby were soon on the way to the other end. Butler, however, stopped their progress, and passed the bail to Goodyear, Put stiii no progress could be made by the homo team, as podcock, after a hue run, had a shot which only juut went outside. Cursham next headed the ball well into goal, aud Tomiinaon hit the post. Marples had a 6hot, which Sorby only just failed to head through. This close work did not suit the Birmingham team, and Edwards tried, with the assistance of bprottand Goodyear, to get away, but Hunter took the bail from them, "borne more briihantuubelhsh crossing by the Sheffield forwards, and Sorby again headed tho ball only iuat outside.

From a foul J. C. Clegg placed the ball just over Carson head, and shots were made in quick succession at bis citadel, two by Marples, one going over, another be.n clev crly headed out by Butler, and one by Woodcock struck the cross-bar, Daniell then made a goodsciew, and Butlci cleared his lines by a govd kick, which gave Goodyear once more possession, and lu- made a neat run, until confronted by lioixseley, who with a hue dying kick returned tho ball, and once more the attack at the Birmingham end was renewed. Woodcock, Cursham, and Marples kept pounding away at tne Koal, but fortune did not smde upon their efforts, several ol their shots hitung tne body of the goal keeper and re-bouuding into play, others bemg put outsme. Butler and Jones in the meantime were working energetically to stavo oh those attacks, and some verv fair back play was shown by Chapman.

Still not to "be denied, Tomlinson had a dangerous shot, and Sorby hit the post. Ivamsey then twice essayed to break away, but each time his efforts were nipped in the bud by ilouseley. Another corner fell to Sheffield, but it was badly placed by Marples, aud tho Birmingham forwards geitmg possession, somo reaily good crossing play, in which Sprott, Wynu, Goodyear, an i wards were engaged, brought the leather to the Shefheld end, but the threatened daugi Was averted by W. E. who made a good return.

Wyr.u an i Goodyear were quickly back, but again were checked by Buttery. Cursham then exhibited some of his well known dribbling pow era, and finally centred tho ball to Woodcock, whose shot only just grazed past Carson's posts. Half -time waa then called, Sheffield up to now having taken three goals to nothing. pon resuming, Birmingham territory continued the scene of the encounter, and a corner kick immediately led to J. C.

egg. This was accurately placed, but the backs managed to get it away, only, howeser, to be at once returned by E. Clegg, who put the ball well in front ot the goal, where, alter some clever manoeuvring by Woodcock, Sorby, and Marples, the latter player secured a fourth goal for the representatives of Sheffield. After again kicking off, Sorby made a good run. Morley and Btamsey did a little clever pass.

uj. and Edwards by a fine run got dose up to the cuiettield end, his final shot bringing btacey's hands into requisition, and W. E. Clegg forwarded the leather on it3 return journey. Ooodyear, however, again tried to come away, but was stopped by Hunter.

Tomlinson then passed to Cursham, who had a shot, hich produced a scrimmage in the portals of the Birmingham stronghold; but the danger was averted, and Goodyear and Iiamsey again got within the Shelheld lines, and the latter player had an awkward looking shot, which however, was cleverly beaten away by Stacey, who gives promise of being a really usetul man in goal. A good run by J. C. Clegg fallowed, bat Chapman returned the ball, and then Luisham once more getting possession made a superb run, eluding all opposition and becuring a fifth goal at two minutes past hve o'clock. Un the ball being again set rolling, Marples made a good run and had a shy at goal, wdrich was Weh stopped by Buticr, and Sorby just after shot the ball over the bar.

Marples had another comer, which he placed with good judgement, and in the scrimmage which ensued thegoul bar took its revenge forthefrequentattacka made on it by coming down on the heads of the players. J. C. Clegg had another corner kick which iie put be hind, and one by Marples shared a similar fate. W.

E. Clegg made a fine tick, and then Sprott and Edwards exhibited some very pretty play, but Houseley stopped their career. Sorby immediately afterwards had an easy chanco of scoring, which ho failed to utilise, and sent tho ball over tho bar instead. and Edwards made several attempts to break away, but their good intentions were thwarted by iiouse-ley and W. E.

Clegg. Marples soon after had another corner kick, from which Cursham had a shot, which was only stopped in the nick of time by Batler. Hawley Edwards then showed good judgment in his play, and finally had a shot, but it went wide of the mark. Some food kicking was about this time done by Hunter, 'he call ot time being now fast approachmg, the partisans ci Birmingham called on their men to get at least one goal, and Edwards, Sprott, and iiamsey, thus urged tried hard to make their mark, but without sue cess, though on one occasion thoy caused Stacey to rush out and kick away for safety. Thus tho match ended in a victory for tho Sheffield team by jive goah tu none, and with a small slice of luck we think their score would have been greater, many of their attacks being singularly ill-fated.

As we have said, the forwards have never played a more brilliant passing game, but we would suggest to one of them that he should Eet rid of a habit of trailing whan he gets the bail until is opponents come up to him, instead of going away with it at once. It is not a pretty style of football nor with fast men likely to be successful. In the evening the Sheffield team were entertained to dinner by the Birmingham Association, Mr. J. Carson, the president, occupying the chair, and the evening was very pleasantly passed.

This concludes the last of the Sheffield A isociation matches for the present season. SHEFFIELD NEW FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION. FINAL TIE FOR THE CHALLENGE CCP. The final tie for the New Association Challenge Cup was played on Saturday afternoon at Sheaf House Ground. Tho contesting teams were Pyebauk and Owlerton Broughton, and the interest excited by the contest drew together a large attendance of spectators.

The weather was fine but cold, and the ground was in excellent condition. Owing to other important matches, which occupy a large share of our space, our remarks will have to be brief. During the first half Pyebank kicked up hill against the wind, but in spite of this they succeeded in scoring a goal. The Owlerton team were compelled to act almost entirely on the defensive, and shot after shot was aimed at then fortress, the dexterity oi the custodian alone saving it from being reduced. Now and then Owlerton id, by heavy kicking, get the leather temporarily at u.

verse end, but their opponents never slackened ti. exertions, and it was always promptly returned. On the change of ends the game waa even more in favour of Pyebank, as when time was called they had secured five goals to their opponents none. Of course, during tho second half Pyebank were considerably favoured by the wind and hill, as their antagonists had been before, but the heavy lunges of Owerlton were of little use sgainst the cleverness of several Pyebankara, We think tho winners excelled their opponents at all points. They played an excellent crossing and passing game, while the Owlerton men appeared at times quite lost in these departments of the game.

The victory of Pyebank waa very well received. Worrail carried off honours for Pyebank, and there was a dead level of merit on the Owlerton aide. CLIFFORD v. CDTTHORPE. The first teams of theae clubs contested on the ground of the latter, netr Chesterfield, on Saturday.

Choice of ends fell to Clifford, who decided to take the hill first. For the first half the play wea devoid of score, and almost eoual. Clifford anting on the defensive, then back, Sttadaraoa, being eapeoiHy noticeable. D. O'Leary.

The position of affairs generally is unaltered, and there is not the slightest improvement to report in the ordinary demand for any one metal, and we do not see very well how any can be expected jet awhile, for the ejects of two gigantic evils, in the shape oi war and lamine, have hrst to be overcome, and bciore that can be accomplished it will absorb a considerable amount of time and money. Copper.

Lioiders of Chili bars have shown more disposition to sell, and several parcels of good brands have changed hands at lo-a-er rates, principally about 64. 10s. Iron-. he amonnt of business transacted in iron at the present time is about as limited as it is nossible lor it ever to be, and if the works were dependent upon the orders received from Loudon we fear that they would very soon be brought to a standstill. Merchant orders Lave heeu particularly scarce this week, and there appears little chance 01 immediate improvement.

Inquiries, however, continue to be made for moderate quantities, butat limits which are wholly impracticable and utterly useless to the works as long as the ex. sting scale of wages is maintained for the acceptance oi lower prices without a corresponding reduction in wages would only add to previous losses, and which it is very necessary to avoid, after having already sustained more loss than many of the works are aide to bear. The future very much depends upon the action of the men, and it cbieiiy depends upom them to decide whether they wiil temporarily accept lower wages or let the orders go out of their hands. Our markets are reported to have kept exceedingly dull all the week, and little or no improvement, either as regards prices or demand, has shown itself. Orders are particularly scarce, and the works are only hareiy e-mployed.

Puces, however, have in most cases remained steady, and without any material alteration. Plates in South Durham appear to be more active, at 6. 5s. to 6. 10s.

per ton. The demand for bars is small, and last week's prices rule the market 5. 12s. 6d. per ton for common qualities.

Angle iron is procurable at 5. 17s. 9d. per ton. The works are in employment only about half time.

Makers having made 6ome alight reduction in their prices for pig-iron in this district, the demand has somewhat improved, and a fair amount of business has been transacted, at 40s. lor No. 3, less the usual commission. We hear of oners of pig-iron being made to aouth Wales at con-aidcrably below the above prices. Although the ad vices frm Barrow-in-Furness state the stocks for pig have not increased, still it is reported that business keeps in a most sluggish condition.

Bessemer is the only iron that shows any activity, and transactions are carried through at 64s. for No. 1, 62s. bd. for No.

2, and 61s. for No. 3. Finished iron is extremely slack, and prices as last quoted continue to rule the markets. More animation is said to have shown itself at Newcastle, as masters have b- en unable to keep up their former quotations for Cleveland pig-iron.

Business having heeu transacted at 6d. per ton less, the demand has become somewhat firmer, and many orders that have been held back have now been put forward. The Birmingham market is reported dull, and hematite brands have become somewhat easier in prices. However, 2s. 6d.

to 3s. per ton for Derbyshire and Yorkshire iron has been quoted. The demand for marked bars has fallen off Biigutly, and uubranded bars remain without change. The Crook Hay Works, at Wednes bury are expected to reopen shortly. Lcan.

This metal is dull, and prices continue on the decline. Lughsh pig is quoted at 17. 15s. per ton, while soft Spanish without silver is procurable at 17. 5s.

15s. to 19 per ton. Spelter. This metul has been very quiet all the week, and business has been very limited. What few transactions have taken place have been done chiefly at 18.

Mining Jvumul. FOOTBALL. THE FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION CHALLENGE CUP. THE FINAL TIE between the WANDERERS AND ROYAL ENGINEERS. FBOM OLB REPORTER.

On Saturday last there was a large master fully three thousand of spectators to witness the concluding match in the competition for the Challenge Cup of the association. There was special interest in the contest, as the Wanderers had previously won the cap in 1876 and 1877, and heuce their victory on this occasion would entitle them tu the permanent possession of the trophy. The Wanderers weie hot favourities, as much as 3 to 1 being laid on them, biinmurd won the toss for them, and this gave them the wind slightly in their favour as well as the sun at their backs. At 3.40 Hcdley started ihe ball, and before five minutes had elapsed, after a good run by Wall, Kennck got the half safely through the Engineers posts amidst great applause. After the ball had been kicked off the Engineers charged desperately on the opposing ranks, and the Wanderers backs for a time had rather a rough time of it.

Hedley Bond, Ruck, and Haynes kept the Wanderers well employed on the defensive and at last, after a good throw in from touch by Morris, the military forwards rushed the ball through their adversaries goal. At this there was tremendous applause, and the cheering was vociferous when the soldiers began to press the Wanderers hard again. For a time it seemed as if tne Wanderers were likely to be worsted; but they soon rallied, and about ten minutes before tho call of half-time a free kick falling to them Kinnaird put the ball so neatly under the Engineer posts that it was easily got through. Nothing more waa secured up to half-time, and so ends were changed with the Wanderers one goal to the good. When positions had been reversed the Engineers returned to the charge, and.

after a very good run by Hedley and Haynes, the former landed tne ball once more between the Wanderers' posts, though at tne last ne bad got in front of his aide. 1 nd so the score was not allowed. After this the Engineers, who seemed to be a little exhausted by their exertions during the first half, had really little chance, as the Wanderers unproved as the game advanced, and the issue during the last half-hour was never in doubt. The Engineer forwards played up with the greatest vigour and dash to the last, but the Wanderers out manoeuvred them, and their play was better than any we have seen in London this- year. During the second -half, Heron's play on the side was brilliant, his dribbling being excellent.

About twenty minutes after the change of ends Heron made a brilliant run down the left side, and middling the ball straight in front, Kenrick got a third goal for the Wanderers. The last twenty minutes nroaacea bo mmmmwm tno interest oi tb Iron. per ton. s. d.
