Jess Minter Gets Air Medal Promotion Cited for "meritorious achieve. ment while participating in a night aerial flight during the invasion of was Jess W. Minter, son of Mrs. Mary L. Caufficld, 1700 Niles street, who has just been awarded the Air Medal and promoted to the rank of first lieutenant in a Ninth Air Force troop carrier group in England.

The award credits Lieutenant for his flight in "unarmed, unarmored and tnes'corted troop carrier aircraft, at an altitude of less than 500 feet, under adverse flying over enemy-held terrain while receiving hostUe ground fire." For similar missions over tho Salerno bridgehead aren.h" received an Oak Leaf Cluster to his Air Medal. Lieutenant Minter, a former Bakersfield Junior College student, began his overseas service as a staff sergeant pilot, flying for 14 months in the North African theater of operations. At the close of the Egyptian-Lybian campaign in February, 1943, he became a flight officer and later commissioned a second lieutenant while engaging in the Sicilian campaign. Hall as Killed in Action TAFT, June William Owen Hall, pilot of a B-17 Fly- Ing Fortress, former Gardner Field man and husband of June Hanklns Hall of Taft, WHS killed in action over Kngland on May 20, according to information received in Taft by his wife.

Lieutenant Hull had completed seven missions over enemy territory with the Eighth Army Air Force and it was presumed he was on the eighth mission at the time of his death. Mrs. Hall was In Madlsonville, when she received word from the war department of the death of her husband. She returned to Taft to be with her parents, Mr. and Mrs.

William Nicholson. Lieutenant Hall was stationed at Gardner Field for many months during the early part of the war, serving as a radio man. He left Gardner Field to take glider training arid later entered flying training and received, his commission and wings at the air base-at Columbus. Miss. W. Purchase Two Station Wagons Native Daughters of the Gnlden West have ended a drive to purchase two station wagons, which were presented recently to the Red Cross to aid in the collection of blood plasma. The station wagons will operate from the blood donor centers in Los Angeles San Francisco. Presentation of the automobiles was made by Mrs. Clarence K.

Noerenberg, Los Angeles, grand president of the Native Daughters of the Golden West. Bowen McCoy, manager of the Red Cross at Los Angeles, acknowledged the presentation and praised Native Daughters for their "Consistent support of all worthwhile community and war activities."
