Brooklyn, L. Westchester; Sports, Editorials, Columns. New Facts Brought to Light In Roberts Double Suicide i By J. McGHEE AND H. B.

WEBBER NEWARK Needham Roberts, 49 year old War I hero, first put ths rope around the neck of his wife, lola, then placed hit own neck in a noose beside her when they commlted suicide on Sunday night, April 17, medical examination snowea. Medical Examiner Harrison Martland said the rope around with what is known as a fixed knot, and Roberts' with a loose By HARRY B. WEBBER NEWARK The death by suicide of Needham Roberts, World War I hero, and hla wife stunned Newark and Trenton, birthplace. Still a mystery is the basic motive. Because the day before his suicide he had been charged with molesting a child.

it was assumed that Roberts who with Private Henry Johnson, slew over 30 Germans would rather die than face trial on such a charge. The suicide brought out the fact, long known to newspapermen but never published, that Roberts had served time on a similar charge in Trenton and that his first wife had.dlvorced him because of that The talk is that Roberts feared the earlier offense would be held against him. Combined with this, la the fact that lately law enforcement officials have declared war on all sexually maladjusted persons. Even granted that he killed himself because be feared he would not beat the rap, everyone still wonders why his wife, lola, went to death with bins. At first, It seemed that because the couple sat late Sunday night drinking In their kitchen, that the double suicide was the climax of some kind of orgy.

This was disproved when It was learned that neither drank excessively. The decision, however motivated, was apparently made cooly. Both knew what they were doing. It took nerve te walk down those narrow stairs to the cement floored cellar, cut the extra strong; clothesline the right length, hang it over the beam and tie it with expertly fashioned knots, step up en the box, and later kick It away. Someone said Mrs.

Roberts was the brooding type and had, herself, threatened suicide some time ago. On the other hand, it may have been she loved her husband so much that ahe wanted to be with him to the end. The key to the mystery may lie In a letter written by Mrs. Roberts to Robert's sister, Emma G. Arretson of 444 Grand Ave, Trenton.

The contents of that letter have not been revealed, but the story may be all there. surpassed the optimistic hopes of the promoter. One of the reasons for the keen interest in this double header is ths large number o'f stars who will play la ths game. The Monarchy boasting of one of 'the strongest teams la the Negro American League are pre season favorites to win the Negro League pennant. Quaker Nine Strang Oscar Charleston, popular man ager of the Philadelphia stars, says the Quaker City nine will be the strongest team to represent that city in many year Ths re turn of Bui Clarkson, sensational shortstop aad Marvin Williams, brilliant second baseman, offer two good reasons for Charleston's optimism.

Osrksoa aad Williams will form one of the classiest key stone combinations In the League, and both are powerful hitters. Manager John CNeil, star first baseman of the Kansas City Mon arch feels that the addition of Bob Thurman, former outfielder of the Homestead Greys, will make his outfield ths tops la ths League both offensively aad de fensively. Thurman and Wlilaxd Brown, Vetera center fielder, will give the Monarch a real one two punch at ths plate. Both showed Mrs. Roberts' neck was bound knot The fixed knot would have had to be tied by someone else.

Obviously, after making the decision to die together, Roberta the knots for both and then they kicked away the box on which they were standing. BOO at Funeral Martland revealed that Roberta may have taken some form of drug before the suicide; there was evidence of the food having been drugged. However, the autopsy showed no excessive amount of alcohol Five hundred persons attended the funeral rites Thursday, April at the Clinton Memorial AME Zion Church, the Rev. J. C.

Nelson officiating. Mllltay rites were held, with an honor guard beside the casket as the bodies lay In state Wednesday night at a West Market SL undertaking par. lor. There was no army caisson In the funeral cortege. Efocf 17 A For: Says Murphy Vorlis or All In Nevaii NEWARK Mayor Vincent J.
