I I PITTSBURGH COURIER Nov. 16. 1957 7 INSIDE OUT By Alice A. Dunnigan OPINIONS SOMETIMES DIFFER Among the things which make America great are the right of free speech, freedom of the press, the privilege to think independently and to express only any- differences of opinion. These rights manifest themselves in this week's column.

In the "Inside Out" mailbag came a letter from Dr. Benedict C. Nojku, an English professor at Wiley. in Texas. Njoku, a native Nigerian who not long ago' received his Ph.

D. in a Washington university, expressed concern over this column's outHining Israel's voting record in the United Nations as reported by an official of the American Jewish Congress. The African professor appeared somewhat, disturbed that "you have been questioned on your press report on issues raised by me at the Chi Eta I'hi Sorority meeting on Israel's voting record on questions pertaining to Africa and other colonial issues in the Alice A. Dunnigan United Nations." Then in a well -documented report he wrote: "(1) Of the 15 major African Issues voted upon in the UN General Assembly in 1954. Israel voted 'no' on four occasions, abstained six times and voted 'yes' five times.

(2) of the eight major issues placed before the Assembly In the tenth session, Israel voted. 'no' four times, never 'yes' and abstained four times. (3) The 11th session WAN almost totally preoccupied with questions arising out of the Suez Hungarian crisis, Therefore, significant questions relating to Africa were somewhat limited in number. Of the six Issues concerning Africa, placed before the body, Israel voted 'yes' twice, 'no' once, and abstained on three occasions." A CLOSER ANALYSIS Nioku contended that issues. receiving the "yea" vote from Israel were primarily of an advisory nature and of minor importance, rather than on basic action.

Citing some specific examples, the Nigerian stafed that Israel voted on a provision that the Secretary General should report on efforts to settle the 1954): question of discrimination against Indians in South Africa But on the more significant resolution of the Political Committee presented to the Assembly (Dec. 1955) on the question of race conflict resulting from apartheid policies in the Union of South Africa, Israel voted "no." On the Algerian question 1955) Israel voted "no" and on the question of admission of Libya to the UN. Israel abstained. Israri has in no instance been found "co sponsoring major resolutions looking toward the liberation or self-determination of peoples still chafing under the yoke of colonialism," declared Njoku. "Israel's record as a small, newly created country, unlike other newly born countries, is unique because of her consistent support of the big, economically viable and strong powers." The African professor said he raised the question simply to present information which was warranted on this occasion.

"Israel has her individual national rights to vote how she he declared the other hand research people of all nations also Fave right to Lose questions when national birthrights are at stake, African affairs are very dear to our hearts and this is precisely why I asked the We. watch with interest all issues discussed in the UN. but more particularly, all Issues concerning the sis called 'Dark Continent. So here we have the story both sides of the pictureyou make your own observations and be the judge. As an impartial columnist.

I'm only reporting the information as it comes to me. NO TIME FOR THUMB- SUCKING Dr. DuBois recently called upon the United Nations to permit a representative-of the Negro people to appear before this body to discuss the problems confronting his people in this country today. In a letter to the membership of the Third Committee. UN General Assembly the noted sociologist: author and lecturer, polited out that white Americans who know nothing and care less about the Negro have been selected to tell the UN about this situation while not a single black man has been given the opportunity to speak, He made special reference to George Meany undertaking to tell of the success which the U.S.

has made ur social progress of Negroes, "yet no Institution has fought harder or longer to degrade and retard Negroes titan the American Federation of Labor, which Meany heads. "This is no time for Negroes to 'suck their thumbs' and permit Meany to describe their plight as one phase of a great adVance Ten vears ago as an official of the NAACP. DuBois requested this great bouts to prepare an "appeal to the world- a statement on the denial of human rights to minerities in the case of citiel Negro descent in the United States. Today, as a simple citizen who has devoted the larger part of century to the situation of Negroes in this couniry, he is re. dog the right to discuss this matter before the Human Rights Commission or before the assembly in elf.
