Rhine Keeps Growing As Major Cargo River FRANKFURT, Germany (UPI) The mighty Rhine River, steeped in folklore and tradition, remains one of Europe's greatest waterways. -A total of five national flags can be seen on this river Belgian, Dutch, Swiss, French and West Germany's black, red and gold. Barges and ships from 30 different shfpping lines and those of 8,000 -individual owners navigate the- vital waterway daily. Before World War II 70 million tons of cargo were shipped on the Rhine. The canal system of the Moselle expected to be finished by 1963 which will permit bar- to move between, the giant steel, center, of Thion- ille and Koblenz, Germany. A recent survey showed that at Basel, Switzerland, the annual cargo totaled over 6 million tons.

At Strasbourg, France, the cargo amounted to 12 million tons, while at Mannheim, Germany, where the Neckar River joins the Rhine, 35'million tons of materials are moved annually by barge. At Emmerich on the Dutch frontier, where traffic is heaviest, 70 millon tons move yearly. The oil pipeline is one of the modern forms of competition with which the Rhine is faced today. However, in 1957 Rhine barge transported 10 million tons crude oil. The advent of the pipeline ha: nevertheless, reduced the amour, of crude oil being shipped on th vital waterway.

To compensate for this, greate amounts of coal, iron ore, grave and other similar materials ar now being shipped by barge. The expanding steel industr; also needs greater amounts iron ore which comes fron Sweden, Spain and Venezuela vi Rotterdam. The ore will he trans ported to its final destinatio along the Rhine by barge. Moreover, the large network smaller rivers and canals emp officials say it appears that barges navigating the Rhine" will be required in growing numbers to mova gasoline and other refined products. GROWING INDUSTRY Approximately 30 years old, the supermarket industry is estimated to have accounted 31 billion dollars of the 45 billions Americans spent on groceries in 1958.

THE APOSTLES OF RELIGIOUS LIBE WERE IMPRISIONED HERE "TR1-CITY LANDMARKS" Presented by Your Holde Bakers his marker about 75 feet from the Chesterfield County courthouse--was erected in 1925 by the Churches of the Middle District Baptist Association to mark the spot where seven men were imprisoned, between 1770 and 1774, for their religious teachings. Baptists, John Tanner, David Tinsley, Joseph Anthony, Augustine East- In, Jeremiah Walker, William Webber and John Weatherford were early apostles of Religious Liberty in if- ginia and were credited by Jefferson for paving the way to eventual religious freedom in all the American colonies.

Virginia, at that time of the the eighteenth century, had an established church, to which most of the influential political members of the' colony belonged. To discourage the foundation oi opposing churches, it was law that all ministers must be licensed. So, when these unlicensed men began their preachings, advocating freedom of religious belief, they were hastily put into prison. Though behind bars, they accomplished, their missions by raising themselves to the tiny windows of their gaol and addressing the increasingly. large groups of eager listeners who gathered outside.

When a brick wall was erected in an effort to stop people from listening to-the men, interested crowds would raise a white cloth on a pole to signal their readiness- to hear the messages of the men inside. Through their powerful voices, they; were able to continue spreading their beliefs. It is interesting to note that Patrick Henry, though himself not a Baptist, defended the men and was instrumental, through strong argument, as well as his own money, in gaining the release, of John Weatherford. Two Baptist Churches in Richmond are named for a couple of these religious pioneers--the Weatherford Memorial and Webber Memorial.
