ter. w. Sunday Morning. IS'ov. 20, 1577-- 21 'Specialist' Visits Appalachian Bible Institute Not many people spend their summers exploring ancient tombs.

Fewer still have made the acquaintance of SOOO year old mummies. Yet. Dr. John James Davis is such an old hand at this, he may aptly be called a "tomb specialist." Dr. Davis, who in addition to being an accomplished archaeologist, is Vice- President and Associate Professor of Old Testament and Hebrew at Grace College and Grace Theological Seminary in Winona Lake, Indiana, was at Appalachian Bible Institute at Bradley this week as the featured speaker for the Staley Lecture Series.

Dr. Davis' interest in archaeology began at an early age. He was born in southern New Jersey in an area full of old Indian settlements, and as a young boy he began studying Indian artifacts and village life. Then, after majoring in Biblical Literature in college, his interest in archaeology was directed toward the Middle East. In 1963 he began teaching archaeology at Grace College and took Air Force Academy Breaks Policy v.

JM77 N.Y, Tiims News; Service Washington Air Force, in a break of policy with the other services, is planning to allow women enrolled in the Air Force Academy to remain in the school if they become pregnant. But the Air Force will retain its ban on married students attending the academy. In changing its policy, the Air Force will become the first service to keep women in school and then on active duty despite the fact that the unmarried students are pregnant. The Army and the Navy automatically drop women students who become pregnant, and also compel prospective fathers of unmarried women to resign from Annapolis and West Point. Air Force officials say privately that the change in policy was spurred by a view within the service that it is a violation of a woman's constitutional rights to discharge her from the Air Force academy if she becomes pregnant.

Last year, at least one woman at the Air Force academy was forced to quit because she was pregnant. Two midshipmen at Annapolis have also' resigned over the. last year because they are prospective fathers. Army officials said that, insofar as records show, no cadet at West Point has been dischcarged because he or she is awaiting the birth of a child. Nonetheless, officials at West Point.

Annapolis and the Air Force Academy make it plain that the numbers of men and women who leave the schools because of impending parenthood is probably far higher than the records show. Numerous cadets resign each year for "personal reasons." For example at West Point. 39 of the 119 women in the class of 1980 the first class te integrate women have left. This is 32.8 pen-enr Attrition was 26.4 per cent fur the first-year men. or 370 out Df 1 400 Many of those cadets cited "personal reasons" for leaving.

Air Force and some Defense Department officials said that the Air Force is probably in the vanguard, and that the other se'rvices will inevitably follow suit and allow prospective parents to remain in school. "There's a strong feeling that this would never stand up in court either for the man or said one Defense official. "Forcing people to quit for this reason would seem to be unconstitutional and its doubtful that it would stand up in court." Defense Department regulations for women on active duty are far more lenient than for those enrolled at the service academies. Unmarried and married servicewomen who become pregnant -are allowed to remain in the military, provided that they can continue as mothers to carry out their assignments. Under past policy, most servicewomen who became pregnant were discharged- That policy was challenged by women's rights groups in the early 1970s as discriminator)', and was changed in 1974.

The current regulation at West Point. which was approved last year, says: "A cadet who is determined through self- admission or other evidence to be pregnant or to have caused pregnancy will be allowed to resign. Failure to resign will normally result in disenrollment and separation from the corps of cadets." part in his first major field expedition. During this time he spent six months in Jordan and took several courses in his chosen field of Middle Eastern archaeology, eventually he did his postgraduate work in archaeology and Hebraic studies while in the Middle East. Pr.

Davis has participated in four major archaeological expeditions and in several smaller ones as well. One of the most enjoyabie trips included a stav in Cairo, Egypt, where he did extensive studies on the mummy collection in the national museum. He found this to be so fascinating that he began lecturing on the subject, and eventually wrote a book entitled Mummies. Men and Madness. Dr.

Davis reports that tomb excavation is his field specialty, and he has done an unbelievchle amount of research in such areas as tomb locations and digging techniques. He feels that tombs abound in knowledge about the past. Human bones reveal such things as the height and weight of the person! the number of adults and infants who died Dr. John James Davis at the time, the diet of that particular culture, family structure, and mortality Kc admits that his most puzzling find was a single tomb containing 33 fetuses. As yet, it is not known why or how the fetuses came to die or be buried in a mass grave.

While Pa3estine has been the focal point of his work. Dr. Davis points out that Egyptology is his second love. Naturally, when one thinks of Eqypt. one thinks of mummies, and Dr.

Davis notes that the degree cf preservation of some of the mummies he has examined has been remarkable. Even the eyelashes and eyebrows are clearly distinguishable. Dr. Davis has written eight books as an outgrowth of his studies. Most of these deal with Old Testament studies and archaeology.

"Paradise to Prison" is a study of the book of Genesis and includes an excellent background of archaeological material; "Moses and the Gods of Egypt" presents studios in the book of Exodus; "Conquest and Crisis" is a study of the books of Joshua. Judges and "Birth of a Kingdom" is the story of the rise of the United Kingdom in ancient Isreai: YOUR OLD PHOTOGRAPHS be restored.
