1 SUNDAY. OCTOBER 15, 2000 SPORTS DAYTON DAILY NEWS 1 IP COMMENTARY Speak Up words to live by Cultural Recent actions at Colonel Uliite raise issues about race For the last time, white America, repeat after me. (state your "Under any circumstances "Use "But especially when talking to blacks." Not in anger, not in passing, not as a joke, not to your black friend, and never, ever in a working environment. Not if you want to keep your job and your friends. Ask Stan "Sarge" Andrews, the Colonel White High School football coach who found out the hard way.

In front of his predominantly black team during practice Sept. 20, Andrews, who is white, referred to one of his absent black players as a to the immediate anger of those within earshot. The next day, on behalf of the team, captain Jeff Vinson told principal Gerry Griffith and Andrews' life hasn't been the same. He was suspended American league city and dropped them off there, No good free agents or good coaches will ever come to the Bengals because of Mike Brown. Mike Brown is not the problem with the Bengals, the fans are.

They are the ones that go to the games and support (him.) As long as they keep going to the games, they can put up with their rotten team down there. When Mike Brown sees his stands empty and all 60,000 fans outside the stadium for two or three games maybe, something might take place. Until then, enjoy your rotten team. This is to the person that said the Bengals were the worst team in sports history. They obviously haven't heard of the L.

A. Clippers. At least the Bengals have made the Super Bowl. The men's and women's teams at UD are playing great soccer. The women's team is electrifying.

I am perplexed by the lack of coverage. These are local teams who deserve more support. They are playing very well. I don't understand why the UCHouston game score was under the small college scores. UC is the second biggest college in Ohio.

They play in the Conference USA not the MAC. Typically you can find the scores under the Regional Roundup. In the Gameplan section on page 2 you have the Columbus Blue Jackets but, not the Dayton Bombers. You should have the Dayton Letters to the Sports Editor McKeon doomed from the start So long to Jack McKeon. A capable leader with a winning record was sent to the Red's graveyard by (General Manager) Jim Bowden.

The wrong person was released. McKeon was a dead duck when the season started and nothing short of an appearance in the World Series could have saved him. Sadly the best coaches on the staff were also released. The Reds' management should name Barry Larkin as the Playing Manager, since he already runs the team. This would provide him with something to do when he has one of his many stays on the disabled list.

If Larkin makes the Hall of Fame, it will be for most games missed and managers sabotaged. 12. We do not list teams in GamePlan until their season begins. Well, I hope all the doubters of the Buckeyes will go away now with a big win over Wisconsin. I think they proved that they are back. At (5-0) they have been winning impressively.

Looks like they will probably be undefeated going into the Michigan game. COMMENT BY PHONE Have a brief compliment, criticism or comment? Call us and make your point in 60 words or less. Dial 463-4636, then 2453. I am so happy for Mike Cameron, the center fielder who was traded by the Reds for Junior. Mike Cameron is a team player he always hustles and wants his team to win.

Griffey and (Barry) Larkin, meanwhile, leave games in the second inning to get on a private jet to Orlando, Fla. What a joke the Reds are. Carl Lindner, Jim Bowden, Ken Griffey Ken Griffey Jr. and Barry Larkin represent some of the reasons why people have lost interest in professional sports. They are sickening.

I wish everybody would get off Jim Bowden's back. If it wasn't for him, we wouldn't have Sean Casey, Alex Ochoa, Chris Stynes, Dimltri Young and Pete Harnisch to name a few. He wants a manager with championships get over it. Griffey and Larkin are great players. Since when was that a bad thing? Junior is a Gold Glove fielder.

I have never heard of a lazy gold glover. I think Mike Brown and Jim Bowden should trade jobs. They couldn't do any worse than they do now. Ken Griffey Jr. revealed his character earlier in the year when he tried to steal the retired jersey number of Tony Pere2 of the Reds.

Griffey has no class. Isn't it ironic that Seattle is winning without Griffey and with Griffey Jr. and Larkin on the bench, the Reds were winning. I say dump all three of them Griffey Griffey Jr. and Larkin.

Hey Griffey Seattle is in the playoffs. Where are you? You can't hit to left field, can't bunt and you are not a team player so let the manager manage, you play. I see now that Barry Larkin got rid of the manager, he now gets a grass field. What's next, him and Griffey will only have to be in the dugout for five innings a game? I think the Reds should make Sean Casey the captain, not Barry Larkin. At least Casey doesn't bail out on the last day to head to Orlando.

Please Reds, do something. When Carl Lindner took Griffey and Larkin for a ride in his limousine a month or so ago, he should have driven them to an Indiana's Scottish Links Golf Course ft ii JL. You say that's in the past and maybe it is. But we're reminded of that oppression when someone white drops then-bomb. Even Andrews' staunchest critics don't believe he's a racist. His work as an instructor for the junior ROTC at Colonel White has helped instill discipline in young black lives. Andrews, a career military man, spent 2'A years as an instructor for the department of defense's equal-opportunity management institute.

From a personal standpoint, I have enjoyed conversing and sharing peanuts with him inside the Welcome Stadium press box during City League football games. But that doesn't erase what he said. "There's only two things I can do," Andrews said. "One is apologize, and I'm doing that from the heart. The other is guarantee that word won't come out of my mouth again." Andrews, in his own words, has been around blacks a great portion of his life and is comfortable around them.

And I believe him. I also think that's what did him in. He thought he was an honorary member. Or in the words of one Colonel White student, Andrews thought his relationship with his players was "cool like that" It wasn't and it never will be. Newcomers Laaksonen of Finland, and Kelli Halcisak from Michigan, are also expected to make an immediate impact. Halcisak played for the women's under-22 select team this summer. OSU teammate Melissa Glaser was also chosen to compete in the three-game exhibition series with Canada. The Buckeye goalie, however, was injured and will, consequently be red-shirted this season.

Sophomore April Stojak will, however, return at goal after sharing minutes with Gla ser last year. Barto acknowledges the high level of competition on the Buckeyes schedule this season, but encourages her players to "play for the present." "Right now, we're still building the foundation, but we'll be competitive every game," Barto said. "You can A A with pay two weeks ago, and on Oct. 2, Griffith recommended to the Dayton Schools superintendent that Andrews miss two more weeks without pay. Andrews' real punishment will come when he returns to his job.

Not everyone at Colonel White has disowned the 53-year-old coach, but many have. Including several of his assistant coaches, all of whom are black. And several black faculty members, whom he offended by saying, in his defense, that he often hears the word from teachers in the school hallways. Facts are facts. We, African-Americans, use the word, sometimes unconsciously.

In movies, in songs, in everyday conversation. Is that wrong? To some it is, especially older blacks who dealt with the debilitating effects of Jim Crow Laws. But I say this to Let us deal with that in house. In the meantime, watch what you say. The common Caucasian cliche goes something like this: Why is it OK for you guys to say that word, but no one else? Developing our confidence at this point in the season also is very important and I feel that we did that." Confidence has been building since late last season.

The Buckeyes finished in a fourth-place tie with St. Cloud State in the regular season Western Collegiate Hockey Association standings and a third-place finish in the WCHA Championships. "We struggled a bit in the league, but last year was very successful because there was so much improvement," Barto said. "The way we played at the end of the year is the way we need to play." Key to the Buckeyes' success will be Rosen, the lone senior. The most valuable offensive player last season, Rosen led OSU in several categories including goals, 16, assists, 17, and points, 33.

"I expect her to have a senior year to remember," Barto said. "One of our goals is to be the hardest working team in the country," Barto said.

"Last year showed us where we need to go. This year, we have more experience, which will help us to play disciplined. We will come to play every day." In her second year, Barto is building the OSU women's ice hockey program from the ground up. The Buckeyes are making strides to improve upon their 1999-2000 record of 8-26-3. A trip to the inaugural NCAA women's hockey tournament is also a nice incentive for the squad.

This year is the first year the NCAA has sanctioned a national championship for women's ice hockey. The OSU program was added last October as the school's 35th varsity sport. While still a young team, with only one senior on the roster, the Buckeyes have much-needed experience the ice. A core of 13 sophomores returns to the varsity lineup, older, wiser and ready for the season opener against Findlay today. "They have a year of systems under their belt," Barto said.

"They developed a very strong work ethic, both academically and athletically, and that will carry over." If preseason play is any indication of the year the Buckeyes will have, it is promising. OSU shut out the Toronto Varsity Blues, 3-0.
