Annie Mae Evans, 515 Virginia-Ave. Obituaries JA.MES E. STEWART James Edward Stewart, age 32. of 305 Davisville, Hopewell, died June 24, at John Randolph Hospital after a short illness. Mr.

Stewart was a native of Hopewell, and attended Carter G. Woodson High School. Surviving are: Mrs. Maude Stewart; three sisters: Mi Virginia Stewart, Mrs. i Epps and Miss Daisy Stewart, all of Hopewell; brother, Charlie Stewart, of Hopewell; two aunts, an uncle, a niece, and other relatives and friends.

Remains rest at the Turner's Funeral Home Arlington Hopewell. Funeral arrangements have not been completed. MISS MARIA MORGAN Funeral services for Miss Maria Morgan, wN died June 13, in New Hork City, were held June 18, from the First Baptist Church. The Rev. W.

H. Mattox officiated. Pallbearers: honorary Mrs. Ethel Johnson, Mrs. Ada Lundy, Mrs.

Isabella Short, Miss Cather- Jone.s; active William Hardy, Woodson Marks, A. B. hort, Thomas Lundy, George Lundy, and H. P. Johnson.

Attending the funeral from out of the city were: Mrs. Annie Austin, Mrs. Vinia Tucker, Mrs. Etta Mary Tucker, Hillard Tucker, of New York City; Emmcll and Robert Morgan, of Baltimore; Mrs. Ruth McFarland, of New York City.

Ernest Condee of -Portsmouth yesterday was elected state department commander of the organization, the Virginia Spanish War Veterans. He moves up from senior vice commander and replaces C.

B. Farley of Norfolk. R. B. Crouch of Alexandria moved up from junior vice commander to senior vice commander and Marion Summers of Norfolk, chaplain of the organization for 17 years, was elected junior vice commander.

The group now has about 275 surviving members in Virginia. Jury Indicts Man For Embezzlement WINCHESTER, W) A corporation court grand jury' has indicted a former salesman for the Northern Virginia Power Co. for embezzling more than from the firm. The two-count indictment handed down against Allen W. Gaunt yesterday charged he embezzled $2,907.33 in various sums from the power company between Jan.

Woman Indicted For Embezzlement WINCHESTER, (ffl Mrs. Zelma Hyatt, former 1 deputy city reasurer here, has been formally ndicted on charges of embezzling public funds totaling A special grand jury yesterday returned two indictments against Mrs.

Hyatt, who has admitted she embezzled public money but has blamed her actions on her husband Earl E. Hyatt. It is expected that Mrs. Hyatt will be arraigned in Corporation Court within a lew days. Each of the indictments returned by the Corporation Court grand jury charged Mrs.

Hyatt on two counts. The indictments said the embezzlements occurred at various times between Aug. 20, 195G, and April 5, 1957. Both city and state funds were included in the money taken. In a statement June 12 Mrs.

Hyatt said her husband "told me what to do and how lo do it. He told me he was going to kill me if I didn't do it." The statement said the money was taken to cover checks her husband had written in Dayton, Ohio. HOT TIME SAN ANTONIO, Tex. RoanokeGOP Meet Names 2 Candidates ROANOKE on A Republican mass meeting here last night produced two candidates for political office--one for the Legislature and one for commonwealth's attorney. Between 65 and 70 persons assembled for the meeting picked Mrs. Hazel K. Barger as the General A candidate. She's making her second try for the Legislature.

Mrs. Barger said the Republican campaign will be a "crusade to keep Virginia's public schools open." She is chairman of the city GOP committee. Ben M. Richardson will run for commonwealth's attorney against incumbent C. E.

Cuddy, holder of the office 16 years. In accepting the nomination, the 28-year-old Roanoke attorney said he was motivated to run by the conviction the voters should have a choice in who holds office. Mrs. Barger and A. Linwood Hollon ran against the city's two incumbent Democrats--Dels.

Julian H. Ruthcrfoord and Kossen Gregory--two years ago, losing by a few hundred' voles. There's possibility Holton may tryy for the Legislature again. The mass meeting also produced a resolution urging State Sen. Ted Dalton of Radford to run again for governor.
