22 The Petersburg-Colonial Heights, Virginia, Sunday, June 9, 1957 zppenei By EARL WILSON COMO'S ACE NEW YORK I wondered just who it Is that keeps Perry Comb and always'the. nice'guy so 1 asked Goodman Ace, liis head writer. It's hot me," insisted Goodie. "I'm the villain and the heel who gives him jokes he won't do. I guess the guy who keeps him nice is Como.

Incidentally, Terry never says he's a nice guy. The public says PERRY COMO AXD GOODMAN ACE 'And he spun off a few jokes that Perry wouldn't do. "My wife makes all the little decisions at our house, but I make the big decisions," was the way one was supposed to go and Perry was to be asked to explain that, I ler. her make the little decisions like we're going to live, what kind of a cat- we'll have but whether we're going to recognize Red China i decisions like that I make!" Perry read that in a script conference, laughed heartily, then said, "Well, that's a good cut." It wasn't that he objected to the taste, but It's a "jokey joke," a "story joke." Perry was very cautious when Bishop Sheen was on at Christmas, too. The Bishop was to say at the Christmas tree, "I wonder if I could exchange this gift you gave me? You soe it's a tie!" Then Perry was to tell the Bishop he had to do a commercial.

"You know what a commercial is, don't you. Your Excellency?" he was WE WON'T TELL YOU whether David Niven or Stewart Granger is get his wish, but we don't have to tell you' what they're wishing for! Ava Gardner completes the rollicking trio who star in "The Little Hut," a triangle-comedy taking place on a tropical island. This very iunny movie which is filmed in BLUSHING COLOR starts today at the Century Theatre in Petersburg. to ask. And the Bishop was to answer: "Certainly! the collection plate." It's when you pass By BERNSTEIN Perry scissored those products whipped up by one of the greatest joke-writing outfits in the TV business.

Perry also has nixed cannibal jokes evidently because it reminds him of missionaries not hecause he's afraid of off ending'cannibals. "We had little Brenda Lee on the show," Goodie- remembered. "Perry was to say, "I'll take you out afterward and buy you an ice cream cone." And Brenda was to answer: "No, break out." "He didn't want to do it," Goodie said. "I made a little cause celebre out of it. I kept crabbing till he did it.

The-thing is, Terry rather sacrifice a laugh than violate good taste." They still tell how he gave Julius La Rosa a one-word greeting on one of his first show's-- (the one word was and after getting 26 letters of beefs from. Arthur Godfrey fans, insisted on apologizing. "Don't do it, Perry," his advisers advised, futilely. For he determined to do it at the start of the show and lengthily. "No, sing a song first.

Get the show off the ground first," his advisers again advised futilely. Perry devoted a couple minutes to apologizing for a one-word offense. "But Perry was right," the advisers'll tell you now. For an Easter fashion show, they wrote a lino: "That dress looks familiar I think I saw Milton Berle wear it on his television program." "MlHon might not like it," Perry objected. Ace.

"Not only will he like it but he'll send you $50!" maintained Jokes Perry declined that, also most Elvis Presley and most rock 'n' roll and he quit doing Ghickie Gleasoii jokes after he topped Gleason in the ratings. Perry generally won't do jokes about any' is in a raling scrap or who might be in body who's lower than he trouble at the moment. Como doesn't think he should make any jokes, personally, about his famous "relaxed attitude." On one program, however, Gcno Autry said, "I usually do rhy show on film this is the first time we've been on live." Perry answered, "That's the nicest thing anybody ever said about us!" "People say Perry isn't a comic," Goodie said. "Well, Benny thinks the guy's got great timing and that he's got the makings of a great light comedian. "He called up and said so, and wanted to be on the show.

"Perry doesn't think so. He thinks he's just a singer and aH he wants to be is Perry Como. And that's not bad, either." THE YTKEK-RXD WIXDUP "DON'T PRINT. 'Illegal' is a 3 Small Children Killed By Mother DETROIT small children were found dead yesterday Ehortly after their distraught jnother telephoned police that she had killed them. Officers found Mrs. Constance "Wheeldon, 20, collapsed and hysterical. Inside the gas-filled house were the bodies of Jimmy, 4, and Deborah, in a bathtub partially filled with water.

The other child, 6-months-old Diane, lay in her crib. Police said two of the children apparently had drowned and one died of suffocation. Mrs. Whecldon's a George, a truck driver, was not at home. Neighbors told officers that the mother was a registered nurse at Metropolitan Hospital.

Officers said she was incoherent and unable to give an account of what had happened. THE L1TTJUE HUT Ava Gardner, Stewart Granger and David Niven are the stars of "The 'Little Hut," an MGM release which comes to the Century Theatre today, with the advance word tfiat it is guaranteed to make even a mummy laugh! This is the hilarious story of three people marooned on a desert island. They comprise a beautiful girj, the girl's husbasd, who takes her too much for granted, and the husband's best friend, who comes up with a preposterous plan for sharing her love strictly within the bounds of legality. The girl plays along with the idea, but she has ideas of her own, and her feminine stratagems make for one of tile most uproarious triangle- comedies ever to hit the screen. As a play, "The Little Hut" ran in Paris for years, in London' for almost three.

Its screen play was written by F. Hugh Herbert, author of the memorable "The Moon Is Blue." Jt was directed by Mark Robson, with Herbert and Robson co-producing. The comedy was filmed in color in London, Rome and On the island of Jamaica, Ava Gardner, playing the girl, has her first out-and-out comedy role in years, a role in striking contrast to her dramatic portrayl of "Bhowani Junction." As the neglectful husband, Granger also has a part which marks a departure from the action dramas in which he previously has starred. Niven, of course, has been making audiences laugh for years. His role as the cbniving "other man" follows his smash hit as Phileas Fogg in "Around The World In Eight) Days." The picture also introduces a new-comer in the person of Wai ter Chiari, handsome young Italian, who is a popular star on the stage and screes in Italy, and who now makes his first appearance in an American-made film as stranger who arrives on the scene to complicate the island domestic triangle.

Since Miss Gardner has been able to retrieve only a vanity case when she is shipwrecked on the island, her costumes in this locale are attractively abbreviated. In ear lier scenes in London, she wears clothes designed by Christian Dioi (which will make the feminine con tingent of the audience sit up anc take notice). A FACE IN THE CROWD Elia Kazan's production of Bade Schulberg's "A Face in th Crowd" opens at the Bluebird The atre today. It stars Andy Griff ith and Patricia Neal. The film, following their highlj successful "On The Waterfront tells the story of a hill-billy-tramp who with nothing more than ALL SHOOK UP.
