Washington News Notebook Lars en Misguided Missiles Innovations Switch -Criticism Bicycle Paths By DOUGLAS LARSEN and KENIV'ETH O. GILMOKE WASHINGTON May -5 (NEA)--I Mrs. Charles Wilson, colorful wife of the colorful secretary of defense, Is coming up- with the best lines at parties these days. Other afternoon at a big reception a friend asked her if she planned to accompany her husband on his trip to Patrick Air Force' Base In Florida to watch them fire some new guided missiles. At least four of the Pentagon's top missile experts were in the circle listening to her talk.

"Dear me, no," she said, "it would.be a waste of time because everyone knows -that those missiles never work." HURRAH FOR the Ft. Myer of- fleers' club. It came up with some new ideas in food at a big reception the other afternoon thrown bv Secretary of the Army Wilbur Brucker. In the first place, the genius who arranged the food placed it on a dozen smaller tables all over the ballroom to prevent the big jam which always takes place when there is only one food table. Then there were such interesting Hems as gigantic bowls of freshly shucked oysters to be dipped in hot sauce, raw hamburger mixed with onions and delicious spices, all sorts of rare cheeses, the best artichokes ever served in this town and al! the rare roast beef any guest eat.

Sen-ing food like this keeps the alcohol consumption down. SIXCE VICK PRESIDENT Nixon moved to the relatively fashion- Gilmore able Wesley Heights suburb It has become ultrafashionable. Real estate men with property in the area of'the VP's new home report that they haven't seen such a boom since just after the war. Everybody wants to be Nixon's neighbor, it 'appears. The value of property has skyrocketed in direct proportion to its closeness to the Nixon; home.

Conversely, the neighborhood he left has sagged in value, the realtors RESI OX'tXO Deputy Secretary of Defense Reuben Robertson is leaving' behind a red-hot protocol controversy which he created at a recent party in his honor. As the party got under way instructed the military aides to inform all couples passing through the receiving line that the man should precede the lady. It flabbergasted everyone because the accepted tradition is just the, reverse. "Why it's just like asking the wife 'to. open the door for the husband." says one protocol expert.

Only explanation for his order was that Robertson thought having the man go first would speed up the whole operation. There was such confusion the switch had the opposite effect. PRESIDENT EISENHOWER came in for considerable, criti cism along embassy row over a picture and news story which came out Augusta, on Easter day. The picture showed Ike with his minister and the story reported that he was discussing golf. "With world church leaders and other heads of state worrying about world conditions on this seriously religious, day the President could only talk about says one diplomat, reflecting 'the sentiment of many others.

THIS TOWN may soon get special, paved bicycle paths through its parks and around its monuments and buildings. Couple of weeks ago an administration official bought his kids a couple of new bikes, only to discover that there was no safe place to ride them. He's pressuring District of Columbia officials to remedy the situation and they seem to think it's a good idea. It will get a big boost in a couple of weeks when Vice President Nixon heads a mass cycling tour of the city to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the first bicycle built in the U. S.

THE I A EMBASSY just had a big party honoring famed Latin movie star Cantinflas in connection with the movie "Around the World in SO Days," in which he ap pears. "What did you think of the movie?" Cantinflas asked Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas who attended the affair. "Didn't see the movie." Douglas replied, "but 80 days seems like an awful long time for the trip." World traveler that he is, Douglas speaks with authority on this subject. the ground near the In the section where there are most of the Iron fences, and which is now being reclaimed by the Cockade City Garden Club with money made at their a a supper in March, an interesting re- i a has recently been made. The Russell family own a square in this section, though their ancestral burying ground was their old plantation, Willow Seat in Prince George County. This place now belongs to Fort Lee and when it became necessary to run a road through the ancient i ground cob Lumrozo, was'prosecuted under the Acts Concerning Religion in 1649 and his case was dismissed by Lord Baltimore. In the Kevins and Commager History the United States is found this statement, "The.Angeli- can establishment was'very much a reality in Virginia, as it became in other rparts of the south, notably in Maryland and South Carolina. Nevertheless the Virginia Church was neither a flourishing body materially nor one which impressed itself spiritually or intellectually on the settlers." I wish it to be very clearly understood that 1 am not making reflections on anyone's religious I respect them all, the point to be made in this communication is that Mr.

Franck's state- church is nothing more than historical fiction. Are we to return to the democratic principles of the founders or to a theocratic state which Mr. Franck believes was born of a non-existent Democratic party wed to an Established Church? Development of the i of thought that Thomas Jefferson and religion united in a grand alliance which brought this country to a perfected state of democratic government is where Mr. Franck really goes off the deep end. 1 can imagine no one so rniscast in the role of a crusader and state- church man than Thomas Jefferson whose religious beliefs were so misunderstood in his time tha ministers of God demounced him as an infidel and warned their list eners that if he were elected thai their Bibles would be confiscated Jefferson was no infidel but neith cr was he a sectarian.

When he was eighty years old he wrote the following to Dr. Benjamin Water house, a medical scientist living in Boston: The doctrines of Jesus are sim pie, and tend to all happiness 1. That there is only one God and He, all perfect. the government arranged to 2 That there is a future state the bodies to the family section I rewards and punishments, in Blandford. Some of these were sealed in iron caskets.

Charles Sidney Russell and his wife Sussannah were the original owners of Willow Seat. Sussannah's is the only stone left since it became government property and this stone states that she died in 1S25 at the age of Go years and on her left is a son who died in 17SS. Charles Sidney Russell came to America as an aide to the British General Phillips and brought his bride, Sussannah, with him. They evidently liked our country and decided to make it their future home after the Revolution. Willow Seat was located so close to the Federal army in the War Between the States that General Grant stationed two Federal sol-! diers at the place as guards.

The children could climb the old oak tree and waich the battles, and wounded soldiers of both armies were ministered to during the seige of Petersburg. The Lyon and Syme families are the last descendants of Charles Sidney and Sussannah Russell now living" in Petersburg. The beautiful Matthew Henry Bible given by the Woody families was returned the last day of the month after having been in Richmond for repair work. JAXET BERNARD NICHOLS. Hostess at Old Blandford Church We Need Today The Jamestown Tolerance Editor, The Progress-Index Sir: In several communications to the forum Mr.

Lester Franck, with complete disregard of history, has tried to that English colonization and the American Revolution were solely inspired by the religions zeal of a particula'r sectarian organization. He calls for a "marriage of the Democratic party and church" and for some peculiar reason of his own wants Thomas Jefferson to be best man at the wedding. In spite of Mr, Franck's appeal, we cannot return to such a state when none ever existed. Even a casual examination of colonial history will reveal that we did not start in 1G07 with a stern state- church. England at the time of the Jamestown settlement was having enough trouble with the Established Church without adding to her worries by inflicting a state-church on the colonist.

In the April issue of the Virginia Magazine of History and Biography will be found Martin, Ancient A by Samuel Hemis. In this biography Mr. Bemis tells that when the Captains of Council, while still aboard the Susan Constant, opened their secret instructions they found that the "King's government at home ordained ths Council shall by majority part choose one of the same not being a minister of God's word to be President. Mr. Bemis writes further, "That being admonished in their first instruction concerning the separation of Church and State the election resulted in naming Edward Maria Wingfield, a Roman Catholic, their first president.

Even in the cases where religious toleration pplied only to those of the Christian sects we seldom find that people of other beliefs were molested. As early as 1621, a Jew, EHas Legardo migrated from England to Virginia and In 1024 ho was joined by Joseph Molsos and Rebecca Isaakc. It was not that Jefferson had an The Progress-Index, Petersburg-Colonial Heights, Virginia, Sunday, May 5, 1957: 9 uarrel with religion, as such, but lat he knew.well the story of state oligion in England from the time Henry VTII to the passing oC the Vet of "Settlement which assigned ic Crown to the House of Hanov- thereby creating a permanent Vngelican dynasty which with few xceptions has served God and England well. Not content with 1 their monumental work they went further and added ten amendments called simply the Bill of Rights. Can any advocate of a state church read Article 1. of this i of Rights and believe he is on sound constitutional ground? I realize thai Mr. Franck is deep ly concerned with states' rights and possibly' he feels that the approach- constitutional crisis can be fought with a political-religious co aliiion but what is gained by destroying one great constitutional right in an effort to preserve another.

Religion, regardless of it's sec tarian label, will always have a prime place in our American way of life and it should not be sacrificed in the dirty arena of politics. The Democratic party with Democrats voting as sucn will carry on the fight for states' rights on "its's own magnificent record. We need today the tolerance born in Jamestown that proved the Golden Rule a far better principle than the code lex talionis. Howard H. Webster-McGarvey 134 Archer Ave.
