true Story Robbery Makes Exceptional Rim DAVID DUGAS NEW YORK (DPI) The attempted robbery of a Brooklyn bank on a hot August afternoon in 1972 by young men who held nine employes hostage through a night-long siege might have eluded history except for the bungled heist's quirky motive. In the course of the crime one of the robbers disclosed he rwante'd money to finance sex-change surgery for his male lover. That extraordinary story has been made into an ex- iceptionally fine film outrageously funny and deep- ly mo.ving titled "Dog Day Afternoon." Al Paeino, an Oscar nominee for his performance in Sidney Lumet's "Serpico" last year! gives that very talented director another dazzling display of acting in "Dog Day" that is sure to make him an Oscar contender again nest spring. He plays Sonny the robber not as a i a homosexual but as a curiously likable, utterly sympathetic lunatic. Pacino has excellent support from a large cast including John Cazale as his taciturn fellow robber, a i and a i a lawmen and Penny Allen as the bank's chief teller.

Susan is standing as Pacino's distraught wife and Chris Sarandon is simply perfect as the would-be love object. The film's pace lags a bit in the latter Half, making its 130 i seem overlong. But that is the only flaw in this engrossing character study. The story's homosexual aspect is not evident until half way into the picture and then is but one of the social phenomena touched on as the robbery evolves into a media event with live i i a itchyfingered cops and pro-Sonny demonstrators. In keeping with its realistic approach, "Dog Day Afternoon" has not a scrap of background music beyond the Elton John song "Amoreena" head over the copening credits.

Since the film's story is basically true and the picture makes one care about each of its participants, an historical footnote seems in order: John Wojtowicz, the former bank teller played by Pacino, is serving a 20-year sentence in the a prison at Lewisburg.
