Mullens To Hold Tennis Tourney Reed Becomes Youngest Black Belt Chris Reed Lead Two By IRA MILLER UPI Sports Writer HARRISON, N.Y. (UPI) Tom Weiskopf struggled to an even-par 72 in 104 degree heat and saw his seven stroke lead dwindle to two Saturday after three rounds of the Westchester Golf Classic.

Weiskopf, who had shot a 63 in the second round Friday staggered to three bogeys down the stretch as his swing whilted in the brutal strength sapping heat. A final birdie when Weiskopf got home in two shots on the 509 yard 18th, left him with a 54 hole total of 201, 15 under-par. Pat Fitzsimons, the young red-head who tied Ben Hogan's tournament record when he won the Los Angeles Open in February, moved into second place with a 66 Saturday for 203. Gene Littler was two strokes further back at 205 following a 69. Julius Boros was at 70-206.

The weather, which Johnny Miller described as "barbaric" on Thursday, the first day of the tournament, has gotten hotter each day on the hilly Westchester Country Club course. Saturday, it was at its most severe and was largely responsible for the lowest an- nouncedSaturday attendance, 13,400, in the tournament's nine year history, as well as several cases of heat prostration. "I tried to walk slow and hit the ball slow, said Fitzsimons. "But I really didn't expect to get this dOSG "I'm from Beaumont, and I can truthfully say I've never played in weather this hot," said 24-year-old rookie Bruce Litzke, who shot a 66 and was tied for fifth place at 207 with-Lyn Lott and Rod Funseth. "I don't think I've ever played in anything like this," said Weiskopf.

"But it seems like you always have one bad round in a tournament and this is mine, I hope. I'm still in the lead. They still have to catch me." Weiskopf, whose 129 for 36 holes was a tournament record, still led by seven strokes midway through the round Saturday. His lead began to evaporate when Fitzsimons birdied the llth, 12th and 13th holes in succession and Weiskopf bogeyed 11 and-13, where he missed a three-foot putt. "I didn't putt very well all day," Weiskopf said.

"Had I putted like I did the first two days, I could easily hate shot 68 or 69." Weiskopf, who has come close to winning this $250,000 tournament each of the last two years and then faded, also seemed more upset with the crowd than with losing most of his lead. "There was this one guy following us all the way around and on every hole he was yelling, 'come on said Weiskopf, refering to Boros, his 55-year- old playing partner. "He was yelling as loud as he could yell." At 16, a 204-yard par three, where Weiskopf jerked his tee shot far left of the green and then chipped poorly tw' one guy yelled loudly "come on Tom, you're make a'double bogey." i turned to (Gene) Littler and said I'm gonna knock this in just so I won't satisfy him." Which Weiskopf did, escaping a bogey by making a 13-foot putt. British Open Champion Tom Watson, Hale Irwin and John Mahaffey were tied at 208, following rounds Saturday of 69, 71 and. 67 respectively.

There were six players at 209 including 52 year-old Art Wall and 23year-old Ben Crenshaw. Jerry Pate, who challenged for the first two rounds, in this his first U.S. tournament as a pro, slipped to 74-210. Miller, the winnpr here last, year, was out of contention at 71-214. Ten year old Chris Reed of Beckley became the youngest Black Belt in West Virginia Friday.
