inner to start was followed by two bulls, and then came in an outer to destroy the appearance of the register. Back to the bull went Sergeant Hill with his fifth shot, and he remained there to the end. Two 90's helped te improve the position of matters, but it was noticed that the quality of the scoring was not improving in the ratio that was expected, and though R.5il'Vittie ran up a total of 91, and Corporal Montgomerie, of the 1st Renfrew, had a fine 33 for each of the two last ranges, the result did not bring un the winning figures to those of yesterday. Last night there were three 88's collated out, but to-day there ware eight 87's included in the list. This morning I mentioned tBiit a competitor had appealed to the council ia order to have the error of one of the register keepers rectified.

A miss had been recorded as his first shot at 600 yards instead of an outer, and to-night after the council had examined into the matter they found that the claim ws3 a just one, and Lieut, Davidson, of the 1st Eife, the owner, was credited with an additional two points, which raised his aggregate ins the Caledonian Prizes to 89, and put him into the prize-list. The names of the winners had, however, been posted on the notice-board, and in order not to deprive the last man of his 1, the Council decided to give an extra prize. While noticing the shooting of yesterday, it may not be uninteresting to give the averages for the two competitions in order to show the character oT the scores, and the effect of the weather on these. THE SCOTTISH RIFLE ASSOCIATION-. TEE DAENLEY. MEETING. Darnley, Thuraday'Evening. So far as the meeting has Bona -it been faroured wii splendid weather.

To-day was warmer than either of its predecessors, and a shade was gladly welcomed. On account the jubilee celebrations ia the city it was expected that the attendance the general public would be very small, bat thars were a few who seemed rather to appreciate the opportunity of passing a day in the country, rather than remain in th city and endure the jostling the crowded streets. the com. petitors, however, the light was rather bright, and the wind of that fish-tail, fluky character so well known at Wimbledon, and which plays sad havoc with the registers. Notwithstanding these disadvantages the highest score was made this afternoon that has ever been recorded at any open meeting.

Itwas equalled the other week by Corporal Housman.Bramssrove.m the second competition of th English Twenty Clnb, but it was on his own range, and E. M'Vittio also equalled it in a match at Langholm, but, so far as I am aware, this is the fcrst time that the acore of 102 has been made over the Queen's first-stage ranges in public at an open meeting. This afternoon James Carrick, 1st Lanark Engineers, who has only made an average of 76 over the 3 three-distance competitions, resolved to have a shoot over the ranges for the Martini-Henry Sweepstakes. At the 200 yards he went and put on 34, the inner being bis third shot. Moving directly back to the 500 yards, he took a sighter and brought up tha bull's-ayo signal.

Thus secure of his wind and elevatioa, he commenced and put on the possible, giving him a double-distance aggregate of 69 out of a possible 70. A few of his friends, who were aware of this phenomenal score, quietly followed him back to the 600 yards, and he at once prepared to complete his shooting. A magpie for sighting enabled him to see what was needed, and so accurately had he judged both wind and elevation that he began this distance with two bulls. This aroused a keen ifiterest in the breasts of the few who were watching, but when the inner signal was showa in response to his third shot it was hoped that he would not go any lower. His next shot was of equal value, but whan he returned to the bull with his fifth shot hope ran high that he would make the biegest score record.

Another bull for his sixth shot mado him 97 and a shot to go, and as this got noised abread a goodly aumber of Volunteers began to crowd rujmd the range. It was rather a trying moment, and when he pulled his last shot there was a moment of intense suppressed by a loud and hearty cheer as the dummy showed that a bull's-eye had been registered, making the range total 33 and hi.s aggregate 102. Friends crowded round him and warmly congratulated him on his success. Carrick is a young maa oi about 22, and although he has not made any other brilliant scors during this meeting he was one of six who tied last yer for the Asssciation Gup, which was ultimately won by Lieutenant M'Murrich, 1st Renfrew. It is also worthy of notice that immediately afterwards he went down to the 200 yards and, entering for the Kynoch Series of Extras, put on 33.

To-day the leading competition was that for the Bannockburn Prizes, for which there were 170, divided into Slsprizes. The weather was not toe meat suitable for good registers, inasmuch as the light was bright sud the wind of that fluky character characteristic of Vfimbledoa, and though 'the scores made were not quite satisfactory to all concerned, a number were consoling themselves '-that they were getting good practice for the larger meetin.tr, and hoping that the experience thus igained would stand them in good stead in a wider field. When the shooting was opened this morning the targets were beautifully in the shade, and the wind was not quite so troublesome as it became afterwards. "Eeid, of the 1st Dumfries, began well. To 31 hs added 33, but he had to remain content with an average jjf inners at the 600, and an aggregate of 92.

This, however, was 'aota figure to be despised, for Colour-Sergeant W. Ingram, of the 3d Lanark, though he had a point more over the first two ranges, had two less at the third, and was under the necessity of retiring with 91 while Colonel Burt was only SS, and A. Ferguson Queen's Prizeman, 1SS0) was 88. All these, hwever. were eclipsed by the shooting of Sergt.

The other competition of interest was that for the President's Prizes at 600 yards; and for these there were fifty prizes and 75 in money. The shooting for these took place at the iron targets on tha extreme left, and as the firing point is even more exposed than that of the right of the range, it was very difficult to get a good register. Last year the first place in this competition was taken by R. Kerr of the 1st Lanark with 33, and there were six others; with a like figure, one 29 being counted out.

In the forenoon to-day the scoring was scarcely quite up to that of last year. J. Marr of 1st Cheshire got on 32 with a magpie and inner to close. He remained for soma time in this position, the wind playing havoc with the marksmen and rendering all their efforts to secure good registers of no avail. One man retired, so dissatisfied was he with the result of his first shots, while there were scores of 4, 6, and 9, and even of those who reached a double figure there were cot a few who were far out of reach of the prize-list.

Indeed, one veteran who might be supposed to have ere this mastered all the eccentricities of the wind found himself completely baffled, and despite all his efforts he could get no more than 14 points. That, however, was encouraging to some young shots, who took comfort in the thought that they had failed in good compauy. As the forenoon advanced Mr Marr was joined in his 32 by J. B. Adamson of the 1st Mid-Lothian and Sergeant D.

Macbean of the 1st Inverness bat these were put down a place by the performance of Sergeant Jamiesou of A berdeen, who began with an inner, and after four bulls he again dropped into the ianer circle, closing with a buli, and reached the total of 33. In the afternoon Colonel Burt ran up a 32, which landed him iu third place, but no one was able to displace Sergeant Jamieson. who thus remained the winner of the President's Prize. In the Kynoch Extras at 200 yards, where the ammunition usad was that in the solid-drawn cartridges supplied by the makers, there was a very Urge number of entries. In the forenoon cue 34 made, but it was in the afternoon that the big scores were registered.

Immediately after James Carrick of the Engineers had made his 33, li. Hamilton of the 3d Lanark took his place at the firing point and put on 35, while Sergeant J. R. M. Lowson and Sergeant Bell put on 34 each.

These remained at the top of the list, and wiil therefore have the first choice oi the Extra Prises. The Renfrewshire Challenge Cup, which was shot for by battalion teams of ten men in connection with the Bannockburn Prizes, was again won by the 3d Lanark, with an average of so that Colonel Merry will be allowed to retain the trophy which his men wrested last year from the 1st Lanark. PSOSI OUR OWN REFORTSB.) GLASGOW SUBWAY BILL, Westminster, Thursday, The consideration of this bill was resumed to-day by a Select Committee of the House of Commons-Sir Wilfrid Lawson presiding. The case for the promoters was continued. Mr Simpson, whoso re-examination by Mr Littles was left over from yesterday, was again placed at the witness table. He said that the capital of the company was 250,000, and the borrowing powers 32,000. Thatwould leave a large margin for any unforeseen circumstances, in addition te the usual 10 per cent, on the estmates far emergencies.

If tbe ropes were inspected regularly they need never snap. It would bo impossible to over-wind, as there, would be an automatic stop on the winding drum which would stop the rope at every 700 yards that was to say, at every station. If the eugineman neglected his duty the result would only be a sudden stoppage instead of an automatic one, as the automatic action of the drum would come into play. There was no danger from the pit-waste3 if. the construction of the tunnel was properly inspected.

If there any damage done to property over these pit wastes compensation, would be given, as was provided by a clauso in the bill. There was also a clause in the bill providing that no compsnsation should bs given to the owners of property whose subsoil was taken. He did not see why an owner of property should have a claim over his subsoil, The clause inserted was to prevent a continual series of litigations by persons who complained of their subsoil being taken. There were hundreds of enterprising lawyers ia Glasgow who were anxious for jobs. (Laughter.) Mr Balfouk BnowNE And some engineers also.

Mr Littler I am afraid I am going against my own profession in eppcisiug such a clause. Witness I feel very strongly on this poiat, because I have been very much worried already. (Laughter.) Sir Benjamin Baker, exammed by Mr Utilkr, said that he was an engineer, and was now in Sir John Fowler's firm. 'i'hey were engineers for the Bridge, and bad had great experience in underground working, In carrying out the underground railways in London they had to deal with structures ns heavy and expensive as any oa the route of this subway. In the London underground railways they went much nearer valuable buildings than the Glasgow subway.

Iu same cases they actually carried the railway under property which they did not pul! down, lie considered the subway a very simple engineering work, and there was not an engineer in Westminster who would net gladly undertake it. There would not be the slightest danger ef damage to buildings in Buchanan Street or anywhere else by the construction ef the subrcay. Iu constructing the London Underground liailway the elaborate precautions to be taken by Jir Simpson were cot adopted. Such precautions were very exceptional. They were wise, but they increased tho estimate.

Mr Cbas. Eorman, C.E., engineer of the pro-posed railway, who was yesterday examined in chief, 5 was cross-examined at great length by counsel for the opponents of the bill.

Mr John Walker, general manager of the North British Railway Company, said that his directors had entered into an agreement with the promoters of the bill to work the undertaking, and they had entered into that agreement as the servnnts of tbe public as well as of the shareholders. The directors had no doubt that the construction of a railway through this district would very largely develop its resources, and would draw through the district a very large stream of tourists. By means of this connection the North British Company would be able to carry the fish, cattle, sheepand other produce of the district into all parts of Sect-land and England. The Caledonian Company had access to the western seaboard at Oban. It was not only to their interest that the North British Company should have a similar access at Crinan, bnt it was also to the interest of the public.

An outlet.at Criuan would give the North British Company i'meansof dealing with the traffic of the west that they did not now possess and with the view of obtaining that outlet they had made a liberal and favourable agreement with the new company. He bad no hesitation in saying that if the railway were made a large traffic would be developed ther. Wherever a railway was made it increased traffic. The North British Company had fsmud a notable instance of this fact in the Aber-foyle line. He was quite satisfied that the line could be completed for the estimates, and hs mentioned that the'Callander and Oban Railway, if it were to bo made now, could be constructed for about halt of what it did cost.

The passenger traffic between Sandbank and Craigendoran would be conducted by a service of swift steamers. Iu regard to heavy goods traffic, there would be no difficulty in working it without trans-shipment at Sandbank. It was likely that the Forth Eridge would be completed before this line was opened for traffic, and in that case one of the Granton and Burntisland goods steamers could be transferred to tha Craigandoran and Sandbank passage. The fear as to the steamboat owners suffering loss of revenue from the railway was purely imaginary. Mr MacBrayne had found that the Oban line had been of service to his steamers rather than the reverse.

The Committee adjourned till to-morrow. NORTH BRITISH RAILWAY BILL. This bill, which has passed through the House of Commons, to-day came before tha Chairman of Committees of the House of Lords (the Duke of Buckingham) as an unopposed measure, and was pissed and ordered to be reportsd to the House, The bill, among. other objects, incorporates the Glasgow City and District Railway in the North Hritisll system, and provides fur the construction of a branch from the Bathgate line to the Broxburn Oil Works, 8 lo 1 no Liz.ird Yrs. Like a number of other men, be retiredjwith 31 at the 200 yar.ls, but he was fortunate at the 500 in putting on a possible, and raising his double distance aggregate to 66. On retiring to the 600 yards he began with two inners and a bull, thus giving hopes of a good aggregate. Two inners to follow made him 87 and two shots to go. There was nothing very positive about the register, an4 if oao were to argue from what had gone be-fore, one wousd not expect a bigger total than 95, but he made a beautiful finish with two bolls and ran up a distance total of 31 and an aggregate of 97. An hour after this Corporal Raid, of the 1st Lanark Engineers, had a 34 at the 500 yards, which gave Mm 6-1 to go back with, but on outer, a magpie, and an inner among the bulls reduced him somewhat, so that the total over all was drawn down to 93.

Quartermaster-Sergeant Thos. Grier, of the 3d Renfrew, like some others, had a start of 31, and emulating Corporal Keid with a 34, lie had for the double range to, but he was even more unfortunate than the others at the 600 yards, for an outer, two magpies, and an inner and three bulls enly mads up 27, so that with his line mencement he was, over all, one point under his comrade from the Engineers. After this there was some curious shooting at the 600 yards. All that men could do equal registers were not to be got. Outers, magpies, misses, and bulls were mixed up in the most miscellaneous style.

Who called this Victoria Cross is it in honour of the jubilee? I suppose. Ivlr Simpson, wanted to commemorate the Jubilee. (Laughter.) He-examined by Mr Littlee The ground at Victoria Cress was unbuilt upon, because the facilities for travelling were poor. Thomas Steven said he was one of the promoters, and was a large employer of labour at the Milton Ironworks, on the route of the subway. The tram way3 -did not serve his works so well as the subway would do.

The subway would be very convenient for the College Division, and many people living there wers employed in the city. The promoters themselves supply all the capital if required. Cross-examined by Mr Ealpodp. Bbowne Yrs. Yrs.

Border Kiflea. 87 83 in my memory, i regret the apparent want or accuracy; but on reading over the report of your speech, I may observe that you deal with the Ulster question in a way not calculated to give any comfort or any hope to the loyal population of that province.

You say "If there be a desire, a well-considered desire, on tbe part of the Protestant population iu the portion, of Ulster capable of being dealt with separately, we were perfectly agreed to considerauy plan for the purpose." But can anything be nitre unsatisfactory than this sentence 1 You ask for a well-considered desire" on the part of the "Protestant population." Has it not been known to all men that the desire has been "well considered," aud that it has been expressed in the loudest tones by those who are entitled to speak for the Protestant inhabitants of the proviuce You speak of the Protestants in the portion of Ulster capable of being dealt with separately," and for these you are prepared "to consider any plan for the purpose but you must know that any plan lor dealing only with the Protestants of Ulster by themselves, and not associated with the rest of the population of the province, is an impossible plan, and not worth oue moment's consideration. In dealing with this question, even in a speech io Wefshmen, I think Ulster has a claim upon you for a definite expression of opinion as to your plan for the future government of the. province. Your plan a year ago was to place Ulster under the rule of a Parliament in Dublin, and the people know and dread that their future fortunes would be subject to the control of a body of men about whose character and aims you and I differ very seriously. You deem tbem patriots.

I hold them to be not patriots, but conspirators agaiust the Crown and Government of the United Kingdom. It is not long since we agreed, or I thought we agreed, on this point. You have changed your opinion. I can onlv reeret that I have not been able to E. 4445455- 31 2545555-51 244-1555-23 91 Witness said he knew that the tramways had besu 87 Lowe.

Experienced men were caught like the others, so that the younger shots felt somewhat satisfied when they discovered that there were others equally situated.

James Swan, of the 1st Fife, ran up a very well-balanced 91, made up of 31 at the 200 yards and followed by "two thirties. Captain Cortis, of the 2d Sussex, was better over the first two distances, and an average of inners got bim up to 91, a figure which, though it did not carry him near the head of the prize list, gave him a fair average for the Cham-nion Prizes. Mr Sherry, of the 8th Lanark, and Sergeant J. P. M.

Lowson, of the 1st Lanark, ran up 91 each, but-Corporal Anderson, of the 2d Renfrew, was forwinate enough to add a point more and total 92. At midday gun-fire a goodly number of tickets were returned bearing figures of 90, and amang these were Captain Pollock, of the 3j Renfrew, James M'Intyre, of the 1st Lanark, a former holder of one of the -Xanark Bronze Medals, and Corporal Graham, of th 6th Lanark, while Major Davisouof Liverpool, -and John Duncan, of the 1st Dumbarton, who bad .96 on Tuesday, had each 91, his score of 32 at the 600 yards to-day being considered a very fortunate shoot. Corporal Barry ran on 92, as did W. Tucker, icf the 3d Lanark, and Sergeant J. Forguson, 1st jPumfriesbnt these were all exceeded by J.

Grantham, of the C-th Lancashire, who put on a very symmetrical 93. A thirty at 200 yards was fol-'iawed by 32 at the 500 yards, and he split the "''difference at 600 and pat on 31, made. up three and four inners. It was feared, from the very unsatisfactory character of the shooting at GOO that the registers would even be inferior to itiioso of last year, but the fact that there were 20 'aegisters oi 90 and upwards against 15 yesterday is aiproof that it is slightly better, and that if it maintained its character the 88's which found a place in thi prizt-list of the' Caledonian Prizes would be shut out from all participation in the honours of the Bannockburn Prizes. In tha afternoon the shooting did not improve so 3Eucb.

In the tramways they had to sit down beside people who had better have spent their nennies in soap. Somewhere about a dozen persons had subscribed, and would secure that the schemes would not be an abortion. The stock would offered to the public at par, and the promoters would take up whatever stock was not subscribed for. He understood that the arrangements were such that the promoters would 30e to the completion of the scheme.

About half -past four the registers of 90 were few aud far between, but the lack was considerably helped by the fine per-formance of Thomas Love, of the 1st Ayr.a younger brother of the champion oi last year. He has making splendid shooting all this season, and "to-day he has taken a very advanced position. To a 31 at the 200 yards off the knee 'he put on one within the possible at th mid range and added 30 at the last distance, closing with three inners and a bull.

This raised him to 96, and gave him the second rface on the list, Unfortunately the possible at S0O yards by N. Chicken did him bo good, for fie onlv obtained 24 at the last distance, and that kept bi down to 9U. This was very much improved bW. H. Darling of the 8th Lanark, wno secured 61 over the first two distances, and on retiring to the COO yards he began with i three mns, and then put on four bulls, giving him a total of 94 and raising him to the third position sn the list at'six o'clock.

A little sensation was manifested in. the afternoon, when it bscama known that Colour-Sergeant Carswell, of the 1st Lanark, Winning his shooting at the 500 yards, had put on II and that he had gone back to the 600 yards and undated the feat, thus giving him a double dis 231 254 254 254 254 254 254 254 253 253 253 253 253 253 253 253 253 253 253 252 252 262 252 252 252 252 252 232 252 252 252 252 252 252 252 252 252 252 251 251 251 251 251 251 251 251 251 251 251 251 251 251 251 251 250 250 250 25U 259 250 250 Glasgow.
