March 2: Dr. Gail Murray, Associate Professor of oao lArill follr oVAnt fltA tvla Biblical scholars believe that the Apostle Paul wrote these words while he was incarcerated. They are written to fellow believers in Philippi and express a deep affection for persons he considers dear to him along his faith journey. Hopefully, we each have people in our lives who are a part of our life team; a group who offers love and support, in our best and worst times. I read some time ago in The Christian Century magazine an excerpt about an Amish farmer.

Someone asked him what "community" meant to him. He said that whenever he and his sons are. finished with spring plowing, they let their horses rest at the highest point on their farm, where they can see 13 other teams of horses working the neighboring fields. I know that if I get sick or debilitated or die, those 13 teams will be at work on my farm. Who are the primary persons on your faith team? Who are the ones as part of your spiritual journey who will be in your corner, helping anyway they can, giving you the support you need, and upholding you in love and prayer? I know you give thanks to God for them and the special role they play in your life! Correspondingly, who can depend on you to be hisher partner along life's journey and along the faith journey? Surely there are people who have every reason to believe because you've exemplified it that they can depend on you! 1 llO LUl CI I iUlUUO VllgV) If 111 lUIA ULVUl A Dl Ofl.il MlUTfl of women in the Memphis civil rights movement For additional information call 754-7282 or see www.stgchurch.org St George's To Host Quiet Day For Women Give yourself a gift 01 a quiet, contemplative morning with no distractions, no disruptions, just time with God to meditate, read, journal, knit, think or be quiet and listen followed by celebration of the Holy Eucharist and lunch.

Proverbs 17:15 Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me. If I say, Surely the darkness shall coyer me; even the night shall be light about me. Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee. Psalm I want to preface this article by saving that I know a lot of hard believers give "an honest day's work for an honest day's pay." I am sad to say that the attitude of Christians about work is not much different from the world's attitude.

Over my twenty plus years in the ministry, I have even seen this become the prevailing attitude among many ministers. A television station secretly recorded the work habits of a city work crew during the course of several days. They discovered many improprieties. Workers started the day with breakfast on company time, broke for long lunches, and generally loafed while working. When the report was presented to city officials, there was much embarrassment.

The problem was obvious. There was too little supervision. It is amazing how much more industrious we are if we know the boss is nearby. Did you know that the Scriptures declare that God is our ultimate Supervisor and that all our work is done under His watchful eye? (Psalm Does that fact make a difference in how you perform your work? It should. "And whatsoever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men" (Colossians Our actions on the job are done in His presence and to His glory.

We have gotten away from what the Bible teaches about work. Work is not a result of the curse placed on our planet when Adam and Eve sinned. Both were required by God to till the soil and reap its fruit before the fall. Work then is a gift from God. Wherever you are on the job today whether it is in the factory line, under a sink, at a desk, in a truck, or on the phone, thank God for it.

See work as God's gift. Every detail of our jobs is an opportunity to serve God. That understanding can transform the workplace from a mere work station to a practical pulpit that say's more about our relationship to Christ than words ever could. Dr. Sam Brassell, Jr.

My comments have to do with the overall attitude in the workplace today.

What has happened to the work ethic in America? Nobody wants to work anymore. It has not always been that way. When I first started to work as a teenager, I saw people work hard. People understood that you did not start off at the top. You had to work your way up.

If you did work hard, you would be rewarded with a promotion and better pay. Somewhere along the way things changed. Today, people are offended if you suggest that they start from an entry level position and work their way up. You would think that Christians would be different.
