By Jennifer Chorpening Columbus bureau The earth beneath our feet could be soon elevated to the state soil. The Senate committee on Energy, Natural Resources Environment took testimony Wednesday on a proposal to designate Miamian soil as the state soil.

Miamian is found in all or part of 22 Ohio counties, including Montgomery and surrounding counties, and is the fourth-most common soil in the state. The effort to give it the state designation was initiated by students from Fair-' field County, and the committee Wednesday heard from two students, -Michelle Mellott, a seventh-grader who is president of the Miamian soil committee at Liberty Union Thurston Middle School, and Ashleigh Miller, a high School senior who started the committee in 1992. Mellott spoke on the heritage of the Miami name, which traces its roots to the Miami tribe. Miller, whose family runs a farm, talked about the soil's importance to her family. Their testimony was complemented by soil experts, who said Miamian's suitability for agricultural purposes and building sites make it representative of about 475 recognized soils in Ohio.

In addition, they said state soil recognition can help boost education for soil conservation. Sen. Ben Gaeth, R-Defiance, questioned the whole designation movement in Ohio, which even has a state rock 'n' roll song. After testimony, Chairman Sen. Scott Nein, R-Middletown, asked sponsor Sen.

Nancy Dix, R-Newark, to schedule the issue for a committee vote next week. State Rep. Jim Buchy, R-Greenville, "has a similar bill pending in the House, but it is stalled in committee.
