I 'DAYTON DAILY NEWS SATURDAY, APRIL 4, 1998 SD GOLF OUTDOORS CAT. "PUS SCENE Boaters beware: That water is cold Rookie takes 2nd-roimdl lead Stebbins grad is running well bogey-free 67. Franklin native Frank Lick-liter shot a 74 after an opening 67. Lee Rinker, a pro from Country Club of the North, shot a 70 after an opening 71. Wargo leads: Tom Wargo increased his lead in The Tradition in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Wargo went on a birdie binge on the back side of the Cochise course at Desert Mountain, shooting a 67, to take a two-shot lead over defending champion Gil Morgan. Morgan fired the day's best round of 66, putting him at 7-under 137. Hale Irwin was another shot back after a 69. Koch In front by 3: Carin -Koch, benefitting from improved afternoon weather conditions, shot a 2-under-par 70 for a three-shot lead after two rounds of the Longs Drugs Challenge in Lirw coin, Calif. Koch, a non-winning Swede in her fourth LPGA season, carded 11 straight pars before making two back-nine birdies as the sun broke through as the leader was en route to her 8-under-par 136 total.

Barb Mucha, whose 65 was the tournament's best round, and Donna Andrews, who carded a 69, were at 139. ASSOCIATED PRESS While the big names were packing up and leaving town, Steve Flesch, a left-handed rookie who couldn't make it into the Tournament Players Championship two weeks ago, was planning on staying the course. He carded a 4-under-par 68 Friday for a two-stroke lead after 36 holes of the Freeport-McDermott Classic in New Orleans. Flesch failed to qualify for the Tournament Players Championship two weeks ago, and returned to the Nike Tour rather than sit home in snowy Cincinnati. It paid off.

He offset three bogeys with seven birdies for a two-round total of 134 10-under and two strokes better than Joe Ozaki and Duffy Waldorf. "It's the first time I've ever been in the lead going into the weekend," Flesch said. "I'm thrilled to death." Flesch has made the cut in five of seven tournaments this year. His best finish was a tie for 15th at the Honda Classic last month. It was a day for the underdog with the likes of Ozaki, who has won 28 times in Japan but never done better than second in the U.S.

in a decade of trying, shooting the best round of the day a PREP BASKETBALL relay team (42.69 seconds). Urbana hires Wendllng: Jim Wendling of Huber Heights has been hired as soccer coach for both the men's and women's teams at Urbana University. The Blue Knights have been club teams, but Wendling will oversee the elevation to varsity status. The University of Dayton graduate has eight years of coaching experience. His earlier assignments were at Miami Valley School, Alter and Wittenberg.

Muhleman seeks repeat: Samantha Muhleman, a Kettering junior at the University of Georgia, will seek her second straight balance beam title when the Gym Rats host the NCAA Southeast Regional gymnastics meet. Last weekend, Georgia won its seventh Southeastern Conference championship in eight years. The Gym Rats have captured the regional 10 times in the past 11 years. Earlham coach quits: Tony Gary has resigned after posting a 26-121 record in six seasons as basketball coach at Earlham College. The Quakers totaled six victories in Gary's last two years and twice finished last in the North Coast Athletic Conference.

Among the players the next coach will inherit is Kyle Leath-ley, a sophomore from Tecum-seh. Leathley was the team's most valuable player and scoring leader at 11.8 points a game. 8th for Rose: Mark Rose, an Ashland University senior from Miami East, finished eighth in the NCAA Division II wrestling championships at Southern Last year the Ohio Division of Wildlife determined there were 37 pairs nesting, which produced 49 eaglets, a record for Ohio. This year the number of pairs is 46, also a record for the state. Two eaglets have already been born and the rest will be due this month.

The closest nest to the Miami Valley is at the Mercer Waterfowl Preserve on the southwest corner of Grand Lake St. Marys. "With the bald eagle population expanding throughout the state, it is getting more challenging to keep on top of new nests and the activity of Ohio's total nesting population of eagles," said Mark Shieldcastle, the biologist in charge of the Division of Wildlife's eagle project. "We encourage landowners and other private citizens who discover new nests or observe eagle activity in areas not previously observed, to report it to the division. Any treeline or woodlot, especially along or near a body of water, could attract nesting eagle pairs." Thanks to a ban on certain pesticides, wildlife management programs, wetland restoration projects, increased protection and public support, the bald eagle population has grown nationwide from all-time lows in the 1970s.

Ohio had four known nesting pairs in 1979. Eagles are protected by the Federal Eagle Act and the Federal Endangered Species Act. By Marty Williams DAYTON DAILY NEWS Ohio Northern freshman Jamal Robertson has not yet scaled the heights he reached as a multi-sports prep star at Stebbins, but he's climbing in the right direction. As a high school senior in 1996, the 5-foot-9, 190-pound tailback, rushed for a Dayton metro-area record of 2,029 yards, averaging 11.9 yards per carry and scoring 32 touchdowns. Robertson's first year at Jamal Robertson rr Ohio Northern was ruined by a knee injury, but he finished strong, rushing for 206 yards and five scores in season-ending victories over Baldwin-Wallace and Heidelberg. As a sprinter in track, however, he's already running away from his accomplishments at During the indoor season, he was clocked at a career-best 6.42 seconds while finishing second in the 55-meter dash in the Ohio Athletic Conference meet and ran the anchor leg on the win- ning 4x200 relay team that set a school record at 1:30.55.

He then finished eighth in the 55 meters at the NCAA Division III finals with a time of 6.46 seconds. When ONU moved outdoors for the Emory (Ga.) Division III Spring Break Invitational, Rob- ertson tied for first place in the 100 meters (11.19 seconds) and ran a leg on the winning 4x100 Legal Advertisements i ATTENTION LEGAL ADVERTISERS: Please note that listed below are the deadlines for placing legal advertisements with The Dayton Daily News. 1 i mj rr- The return of warm weather has put more boaters on Ohio's waterways and has brought out the year's first recreational boating advisory from the Jim Morris Ohio Division ofWatercraft. The state agency cautions boaters that water temperatures are still lower than air temperatures and warns against any accident that might put persons in contact with the water, causing hypothermia. Cold water robs the body of heat 25 times faster than air of the same temperature, watercraft officers say. Without protective clothing, survival time in the water is usually less than 15 minutes. The watercraft division offers the following precautions to anyone going out in a boat this time of year: Prepare to fall in the water.

Most fatalities involve people who did not expect to go into the water and were not prepared for it. If you cannot wear a wet suit or dry suit, wear wool or fleece, which preserve body heat even when wet. Always wear a life jacket. Don't just have it on the boat and don't sit on it. Wear it.

Obey the boat's capacity limits. Also watch how weight is distributed in the boat. Watch the weather. Check before you go out and watch during your trip. Spring winds can make a lake rough.

More eagles: Ohio's bald eagle population keeps growing.
