By Tonya Pendleton KNIGHT RIDDER NEWS SERVICE In 1996, singer D'Angelo was nominated for three Grammys and three Soul Train Music Awards.

He went home empty-handed from the Grammys, but won all three Soul Train Awards. That same year, Grammy darling Mariah Carey, nominated for six awards, picked up only one Soul Train nomination. Soul Train has traditionally picked up the slack where Grammy nominations fall off for black artists. It recognizes soul, jazz and gospel artists in 11 categories and gives two annual achievement awards the Quincy Jones Award for career achievement and the Sammy Davis Jr. Entertainer of the Year Award.

This year, Whitney Houston and Sean "Puffy" Combs are the honor-ees. "Typically, the Soul Train Music Awards have been a barometer for the public sentiment of African-American people," said Dyana Williams, whose Philadelphia-based International Association of African-American Music hosts an annual music conference, among other programs. By Ellen Sweets DALLAS MORNING NEWS "They said someday you'll find All who love are blind.

When your heart's on fire, You must realize Smoke gets in your eyes." And your hair, and clothes and, if you spend enough time in a smoke-filled setting, into your underwear and the skin it covers. Otto Harbach and Jerome Kern omitted such details when they penned that 1930s ditty. So if you're a terminal smoker, what are you supposed to do in our relentlessly anti-smoking setting? A Minneapolis-based company thinks it has found a solution: Banish the smell of smoke with a product called, uh-huh, Banish. This was good news and no news to a group of smokers and nonsmokers who gathered at a Dallas hangout that attracts a cross-section of lawyers, college students, media types and neighborhood regulars. This is a table of 30-, 40- and 50-year-olds.

Ad man Mike Foley, a con- fessed pack-a-day smoker, offered to try Banish, a liquid, in deference to his wife, Susan. "I'm a dental hygienist, and I work in an environment that's "Sterile, so the last thing patients want to smell is smoke," she says. "But living with a smoker, well, sometimes, I open my purse and it smells of smoke. The only first-time nominee in the entire female cate-, gory is Erykah Badu.

Grammy voters virtually ignored queen Mary J. Blige, whose only Grammy nomination is for Best Album. Meanwhile, she's a three-time Soul Train nominee this year for the single Everything and for Best Female Album, and Album of the Year. Not surprisingly, the ever-present Combs received five nominations from Soul Train and four from the Grammys, including Best New Artist. He and Badu, both artists who cross over to the pop charts, -were almost equally recognized by both Grammy and Soul Train voters.

She is a Best New Artist nominee in both contests, achieving a total of three Grammy nomina- tions and four Soul Train nods. Erykah Badu, first-time nominee in the female category. "I've been smoking since I was 14," Shirley Baccus, 74, says. "The smell of smoke doesn't bother me because it's a smell I like but I understand that there are people who don't like that smell.

Give it here; let me try it." She does, and pronounces vinegar as a component. But Banish does remove the smell of smoke from her hands. She shrugs. "If you put vinegar in a room, it Will dispel odors," she says. "I guess this would be worth buying for the people who are offended by my smoke.

The product, which comes in three sizes and ranges in price from $2.69 to $6.99, is designed to remove same-day tobacco smoke odor from clothes and hair by means of a pump-spray bottle. Promotional material says Banish doesn't have a scent of its own, and that the water-based mist neutralizes rather than masks smoke odor.

Patrons at Martini Ranch in Dallas are a bit more serious about the little bottle of clear liquid. This is a good place to test for smoke inhibitors. Cigar-smoking Lee Hopkins Jr. takes a pause from his Royal Jamaican stogie. He sprays.

He waits. He sniffs. "It still smells like cigar to me," he says. "What did you say this stuff is supposed to do?" Alisha Hill, who waits tables, is enthusiastically receptive. "I'm here every night, and I go home with the smell of smoke in my clothes," she says.

"If it would work, it would be worth buying, but I'd have to wait until I got out of here to see. All I can smell in here is smoke, smoke and more smoke."
