covers globe COX NEWS SERVICE When it comes to making money, The Walt Disney Co. certainly lives up to its reputation as The Magic Kingdom. Consider this: A $1,000 investment in Disney stock five years ago would be worth more than $3,500 today. And Disney's profits, which drive stock price, are likely to keep rising as its global cast of characters continues to expand from film hits like Honey I Shrunk the Kids and Beauty and the Beast. The characters not only populate Disney's movies and highly profitable theme parks, but they grace hundreds of consumer items worldwide, including "Little Mermaid," the first Nintendo game designed for girls; and Germany's Micky Maus magazine.

About 22 percent of last year's revenue of $8.18 billion came from overseas. Profit was $636.6 million. Even with the recession, Disney's crown jewels Disneyland in Anaheim, and Walt Disney World near Orlando, continue to sparkle. i An estimated 28 million people visited Disney World last year, making Orlando the No. 1 tourist destination in the world, according to Amusement Business magazine.

Along with those mainstays, and Tokyo Disneyland, the company continues to weave marketing magic with financial wizardry, creating scores of new businesses since 1987, including Euro-Disney which cost more than $4 billion to build. Disney, which owns 49 per-, cent of the park, contributed just $160 million. Investors, enchanted by Disney's magic, put up the rest. shares NPC; Incorporator Allen Levin; Agent: Sam Levin, 111 W. CONTINUED FROMIF There also are workers who specialize in other artforms that seem almost primitive or out of place. John Porumbi bends over an air- craft propeller strapped to a workbench and grinds, the aluminum blade. "One down, 29 more to go," yelled the 61-year-old over, the blaring noise. "They don't come out of here unless they're perfect," Porumbi said, "and computers can't see to that." "They've tried having machines do this," added Bruce Click, 50. "But every mark has to be gone and a machine can't do that." i Click spends about 20 minutes polishing each blade.

Like a scientist removing a test tube, Click removed an unfinished propeller from a waiting stack and closely examined both sides, first with his eyes, then with his hands to feel for smoothness. He then placed the propeller on a bench and started up the polishing machine. Using both hands on the machine, Click glides the polisher back and forth over the blade, stopping periodically checking for smoothness. This art is not going to die off once these workers retire not if Bryan Reists can help it. "I'm trying to learn everything I can from these guys before they retire," said Reists.

At 25, Reists is one of the plant's youngest workers. "I'm proud of what I do," he said. "I can actually look at a plane and say, if it weren't for me, that plane wouldn't be in the air. No computer can say that." Propeller CONTINUED FROMIF McCauley started out as a small shop with about 18 workers on Ave. In West Dayton.

It moved to its current location in 1978. In the 1930s and 1940s, the company made wooden propellers. It didn't make its first aluminum propeller until 1946. Within the industry McCauley is known by its trade name, Black Mac, which is painted onto its blades in its paint shop. In 1960, McCauley was acquired by Cessna Aircraft Co.

Since then it has had several parents. In 1986 Cessna became a subsidiary of the St. Louis-based General Dynamics Corp. And earlier this year, Cessna was sold to Textron Inc.
