"LA Story" (PG-13) Wareham accepts Cleveland post Greater Dayton Public Television trustees begin search for new chief By Tom Hopkins DAYTON DAILY NEWS Jerry Wareham has resigned as president and general manager of Greater Dayton Public Television, which operates WPTD (Channel 16) in Dayton and WPTO (Channel 14) in Oxford, to take a similar position in Cleveland.

In June, he'll become president and general manager of the Educational Television Association of Metropolitan Cleveland, licensee of WVIZ-TV, which serves the ClevelandAkron area. Bill Kasch, chairman of the Greater Dayton Public Television board of trustees, said trustees are launching a search for a replacement. "Some of the trustees are more worried about my kid not playing football for Oakwood anymore Channel 16 has experienced major growth during Wareham's 7Vi-year tenure. The station built a downtown te-lecenter and moved into the state-of-the-art facility in 1988. Last year, Channel 14 switched from simulcasting to separate programming, giving the Dayton area, in effect, its second public TV station.

During a period of cutbacks in government support for public broadcasting, Channels 16 and 14 have been raising more than $2 million a year through viewer contributions, the Great TV Auction and gifts from local corporations and foundations. "We've had some real success here," Wareham said. "Thanks to a very generous commmunity, we've established a wonderful base of operations for the future." Wareham has served as presi dent of Ohio Educational Television Stations, chairman of the Joint Legislative Committee of Ohio Educational Broadcasting and a member of the board and Executive Committee of the Eastern Educational Network. He also has been a director of Bank One, Dayton, chairman of the Dayton Holiday Festival and a trustee of the Dayton Art Institute, the Dayton Area Chamber of. Commerce, the Dayton Area United Way and the Dayton-Mont gom-1 ery County Public Education Fund.
