When an expensive TV series has just a so-so audience rating not bad enough to cancel, but not good enough to send the sponsors into ecstacy--what can be done about it? The obvious answer is to spend more dough and get better scripts, but hardly anyone involved with producing a series thinks of that. Most TV producers an-d sponsors (and the networks) don't have enough faith in the TV audience's teste for quality to bother with beefing up the scripts. New character gimmicks or a new producer or even a new time spot are easier to find anyway.

Adenauer Speaks West German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer's life and achievements and their effect on modern history--wifii film scenes from the past and present underlining Adenauer's own observations--are outlined in CBS REPORTS: "Germany Since Hitler: Adenauer Sums Up," "Wednesday p.m. EST) on the CBS Television Network. 'Great Challenge' To Start Sunday "The Great Challenge," award- winning CBS News series, will begin its sixth season on the CBS Television Network and the CBS Radio Network Sunday, (4-5 p.m., EST), with the first five special full-hour symposia on the im- ner concerns facing American democracy.

With CBS News Correspondent Eric Sevaried leading the discussions, the broadcasts will originate live in New York. "The Great Challenge" in 1953 will examine aspects of contemporary life in the United States in relation to the ideals and the realities of American democracy. The initial program. Bill Dozier, head of Screen Gems (where "Empire" is produced), called Egan one day and told him about the change.

"I believe Chrysler, one of the sponsors, took a survey in the East, and it showed the two women weren't scoring heavily enough," Egan reports. A Screen Gems official confirms this and explains that Chrysler instructed its dealers around the country to find out'from-their customers how they liked "Empire." "Even though, we're doing a modern-day western, the women in it seemed to bother the viewers. or at least that's what we were told. We're adding two men, Warren Vanders and Charles Bronson, because it's supposed to be easier for the writers to write for four men," Egan adds. "Vanders will play it for comedy." 11:15 I pointed out to Egan that, last season, "Laramie," the western which precedes "Empire" on Tuesdays, replaced Hoagy Carmichael (who was playing it for comedy) with Spring Byington, because it was felt some feminine interest was needed.

If we dug deeply enough, we'd probably find that --Movie took a survey to determine that change, too. Sponsor surveys are fairly common. Variety (the tradepaper) reported recently that Proctor Gamble distributes "exhaustive questionnaires" to all of its executives and their wives, asking that they report their likes and dislikes concerning all G-sponsored TV shows. One question, asks, War Series Sets Invasion Drama War correspondent 1 Wright leaves Italy for the Pacific, covering the Marine invasion of an island where his aviator brother is reported to have been shot down and missing in action, on "The Gallant Men" tonight (ABC-TV, p.m., EST). Philip Carey and Van Williams guest star as Sgt.

Matt Barragan and Lt. Dave Cameron, respectively. In "The Leathernecks," Wright observes battle-wise Barragan in conflict with the new commanding officer, Lt. Cameron, who prefers to lead an attack instead of leading the men. On a mission in enemy territory, Barragan makes his point that responsibility of command is more important than being a hero.

Meanwhile, Wright waits to learn of his brother's fate. While out hunting wirh his master, a hound dog gets trapped a hole. Before Little Richard is freed, men and machines have to out in a 24-hour day.

And it's true story. Jack Webb directs and humor arise from a 'little guy' putting something over on a big guy'?" Another poser wanted to know, what extent were any of fihe female characters shown provocatively clad?" It seems fairly obvious from such questions that neither Buster, Keaton nor Brigitte Bardot is likely to wind up on TV sponsored by Egan owns one third of "Empire," which explains the apprehensive furrows on his brow whenever he discusses the overhauling the series is going through. What undoubtedly makes him more nervous is his lack of knowledge about TV intricacies. He has to take the word of the so-called experts with their "family" surveys. "I took this role of Jim Redigo," says Egan, "because he isn't a cry-baby hero 1 ho is forever explaining why he does things.

I'm bored with these TV heroes who do things because they hate their mothers. Redigo is not addicted to anything. He's just a guy who does what he has to do, and he doesn't need If Clirysler doesn't continue to go for Egan as Redigo, surely he can get a job with Proctor Gamble. He sounds just like their type. Larry Wilson (Hampton Fancher) is Little Richard's master. To him, a good hunting dog is a way of life as well as a treasured pet.

When Little Richard is trapped, Wilson's efforts to free the animal are unsuccessful. His wife Biilie (Patricia Rainer) comforts the dog while her husband seeks the help of men and machines. The resultant effort stretches into day and night work for all concerned.
