The internship will last for six weeks with an evaluation at the end. "Animation is so big right now, and the demand for good animators is so high that they might say go back to school or they might keep me on as an animator," McCaulla said. He is scheduled to work on the sequel to "The Rescuers," called "Rescuers Down Under." McCaulla is presently studying animation at California Institute of Arts in Valencia, a northern suburb of Los Angeles.

The school was the original idea of Walt Disney who wanted to create a school which contained the classic disciplines of music, dance, theater, art and film and production, he said. The school was founded in 1971. The students attend two classes a day, each one and one half hours long, for five days. They then move on two two more areas for the next week. McCaulla was invited to Riverdale by art teachers Harriett Sutton and Jane Witt.

The two art teachers had invited the young artist to visit earlier in June with the 5th through 8th graders. Because of the success of that first visit, Sutton and Witt invited McCaulla back for a second visit. McCaulla, a 1987 Bartlett High School graduate, will begin a six week internship with Walt at Riverdale Program an Enrichment drawings. -v-v takes to get an idea down on film and onto the screen. He started out by telling the students that the first thing artists have to do for an animated production is create a story board.

He said that an artist needs to be able to visualize the entire project before starting on the very first drawing. The next step is make a model sheet which illustrates how each character will look from several angles. McCaulla showed the students several model sheets from the television show "The Simpsons," and some early Disney productions which show exactly how the characters are to be drawn. As an example, he said Bart Simpson had a specific number of points on top of his head that had to drawn no matter what the angle is shown from. After the model sheets have drawn to specifications and handed out to the animators working on the production, thumb nail drawings are sketched out.

"The thumbnail sketches, named thumbnail sketches because they are no bigger than your thumbnail, are just loose, easy, fast drawings," McCaulla said. "They are used to explore the acting of the characters before the animator gets into it." When a particularly difficult move by a character is causing problems for an animator, a series of photos will be taken of a person or an animal to use as a reference, he said. After doing the individual drawings for the production, a "pencil test" is done. A pencil test is the series of transparent drawings, without color, that are put together with sound to help animators judge there work. McCaulla presented his own pencil test to the Riverdale class, entitled, "Hamburger Helper." The two minute animated film contained 2,000 drawings and worthfef work, from the storrboard to he pgncil test production, at Cal Arts for McCaulla.

From this step, McCaulla said color and sound alterations are added for the final product. JG3E3C x.mWimmi V-? 1.1 1 1 1 1 hhmha- fT. Mike Craven, son of Mr. and Mrs. Steve M.

Mid-South Investor Television Series. 9:30 p.m. p.m. 'Movie of the Week, State Door Canteen, starring Cheryl Walker and William Terry. This week's Movie of the Week is Father's Little Dividend, starring Spencer Tracy and Joan Bennett.

This movie is an affectionate, amusing observation of the American way of parenthood. As the somewhat reluctant grandfather, Tracy's craggy, lovable face and gentle sarcasm make a wonderful commentary on the silliness that preceeds the blessed event. Joan Bennett gives a superb performance as the adoratle but slightly daffy mother, and Elizabeth Taylor recreates her role as the darlirg daughter and mother -to-be in this sequel to Father of the Bnde 1.
