Victor Hugo Green was always one who not only believed In facing' a problem, but also in doing something about it For the Negro traveler, whether on business or pleasure, there was always trouble finding suitable accommodation in hotels and guest nouses where He would be welcomed. Very often despite advance reservations, he would be turned away on flimsy excuses when a proprietor saw the color of his skin.

Characteristically, Victor Green back in 1936 thought of doing something about this. He thought of a listing, as comprehensive as possible, of all first class hotels throughout the United States which catered to Negroes. His idea led to the founding of the "Green Book." Now the Negro traveler, even in the deep color conscious South, need not about embarass ment from The book tells him just where he would be received with open arms. VISITED. He says: "Advertising is an item that brings large results, but it appears to me that the average Negro hotel management doesn't believe in advertising. White hotels spend thousands of dollars yearly, advertising their places, and. hence they are known throughout the country. We as a race in the same line will have to do the same thing if wewant more business." the services offered in the hotels listed in his directory. He likes to keep tab en them because he Insists that only first rate places deserve a listing in the "Green Book." Mr.

Green has found it necessary on occasions to rap Negroes in the hotel business. He points out that many of them are losing business to white hotels because they lack seriousness in raising, the tandards of Negro hotels. Some of the previously all white hotels have been taking business away from them. Competition is getting keener every year as more and more white hotels in the quest for increased earning open their doors to Negroes and offer them, excellent accommodations and good cuisine, he says. The Negro traveler rightly puts his own comfort above sentiment. He will not go to an inferior hotel merely because it is run (and quite often inefficiently too) by a member of his race.

ESSO USES GUIDE Mr. Green has been stressing the importance of good service for the traveler's dollar in his meetings with travel and hotel groups all over the country. His emphasis on good standards has earned an enviable place for the "Green Book" among travelers. Attesting to this is the fact that his book is distributed to travelers by Esso Standard Oil, and airlines, buslines, automobile clubs and travel bureaus all over the country. Mr.
