The financially strapped sled team is holding tryouts and practices at Canada Olympic Park in Calgary because its Lake Placid track is undergoing repairs, but neither financial problems nor lack of a home track has stopped the U.S.

team from attracting some great athletes not usually associated with snow sports. It all started last year when NFL wide receiver Willie Gault joined the U.S. Bobsled Team while still under contract with the Chicago Bears. This week running back Herschel Walker, from the Dallas Cowboys, and Quency Wil liams, defensive end for the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League, also announced their intention to try out for the team. And so did 400-meter hurdler Edwin Moses, who reportedly approached Gault earlier this week about trying out for the team.

"We've exhausted our funds and now we are down to our bare bones," said Louis Pugh. a Harveys Lake resident who was named manager of the U.S. Bobsled Team earlier this year. "Now, we don't have the proper funding to take the team to Europe on the World Cup trail." The addition of the "super athletes" is expected to help draw publicity and much-needed funding to the financially trou that uses their great strength and running abilities to quickly push the sleds from the starting gate. The Calgary Sun reported this week that a CBS film crew is on its way to Canada Olympic Park to film a documentary on the U.S. sled team training In Calgary. This kind of publicity will help us attract major sponsors, major corporations that are looking to sponsor an athletic team." Pugh said. But Pugh cautions that neither Gault or Walker or anyone else will be guaranteed a place on a sled until after the tryouts.

"Let's face it. We have some of the best drivers in the world. If we can get a first-rate crew together, then we will be right in there with the best of them," Pugh added. Athletes like Gault. Walker.
