It Is a shameful, barbarous spectacle, and it is clear that those in authority in the disgraced city and state are not going to do anything about it. because rope, faggot, bullet and torch have historically been the hallmarks of their existence since they took the land from the Indians and chased them out. If there were any shame in these people there might be some hope for the future, but when has Birmingham or Alabama shown any shame over sins against the Negro? Jackie Strikes Out Jackie Robinson, the former Brooklyn Dodgers baseball star, was a whiz bang on the diamond. But he struck out at the typewriter last week when, in his syndicated column, he attacked S. B.

Fuller, president of Fuller Products Co. and publisher of The Courier newspapers. He accused Mr. Fuller of allowing himself to be "used by whites who want to hold his own people down." Jackie, who used to dazzle baseball fans with his daring running and his mighty slugging, has taken to columning and. more often than not.

he uses this outlet to tell folks off. What got his dander up about Mr. Fuller was an interview which ap jeared in U. S. News and World Report, and which was reprinted in The Courier.

Appearing on an "At tHeviskm shw. Jackie felt it was a foul ball when "one of the panelists attempted to refute sorre of my statements by quoting Mr. Fuller, the cosmetics manufacturer, who recently told a national magazine some absurdities to the effect that the Negro is not discriminated against in America he's just lazy." Jackie admitted that Mr. Fuller has a right his views. And we, in turn, submit that Jaeky too.

has a right to his, even if they are muddled. Item: Robinson says that Mr. Fuller, through the numerous corporations he heads, employs hundreds of whites and is in a class by himself in this regard. Jackie, on the other hand, is employed by a firm which has a Urge number of Negroes on its payroll and, from all indications, retains Robinson to "keep them in line' and to "keep them satisfied." Who. we a.k, appears to be allowing himself to sed by whites Robinson suggests that Mr.

A. ROGERS Blind No More ShosU CharUyne Hunter and Walter Stovafl have married? This question has been raised nationally and intemationauy. It is altogether absurd. Perhaps the prime example of our national hypocrisy in race, or human, reiarkms is evidenced by the spectre ilKH uim ciously hold up under the label of "racial intermarriage." race, or human, relations in the United States requires of us a care ful re exam illa tion of thisEev. I see it as the'zreat day in the Negro's history. Rsv. Malcolm BOYD marriage concerns only the married estate of two persona, two human beings created alike in the image of God and equally redeemed by Jesus Christ Probably the most useful instrument In human relations in this country at this time would be a significant increase in what is archaically termed "racial intermarriage." However, even to use the term is henceforth an outmoded I am not urging.

In any sense, an increase in so called racial intermarriage as a self conscious gimmick. Any such gimmick would, in fact, be merely an admission of bigotry and heightened racial uo sckMisness. What I am calling for is the destruction of all racial Tarriersasf a cl a barriers. Surely we must recognize that our only national and cultural hope is to develop creatively the potentialities of the U.S. by recognizing all citizers as human beings, as individual persons possessing an innate asd God given dignity and re sponsibiUjey for one another.

Hypocrisy in rare, or human, relations must be ended. Tns pratjigs about equality by a patemalisUc white majority must give way to actions out shouting pronouncements. Too, the denisgogucry of Negr bigots and black supremacists must yield ground to a practiced integration in every part of American life. The time for us Is very late. Many leaders, both NVgro and white, say hunrsiiy that, "In their opinions, it is loo late.

I bcheve with all my heart that it is not too late. The sdencs of eugenics which deals with the Influences that bn prove the qualities of the human race win be mentioaed. rirst, from a moral viewpoint there Is no religious law la the JudawChrtstUn faiths that prohibit interracial or mixed marriage. Many of the uninformed will state that the' Bible "is against mixed this thaw state ments are far from the truth and bespeak bigotry with or wlthaut mis understanding and nus matrpretatlon of the sacred scripture. A Liberal person would be the first to state that are children of God aecordtaf to the Bible and tn the "eyes of God" we are all equal Then too, marriage is a sacred bond between two persons who have free choice and the latter should be idealistic ally mended reverence and respect. In these times of the so called social revolution with the non whites peoples throughout the world are demanding democratic principles we, in the United States, hear statement toward mixed marriages which are not based on true facts a free society.

Some authorities state that the average American Negro, today, has about 60 per cent of sthcaUed white blood and the average American Caucasian has about 18 per cent to 32 per cent of non white blood. These facts would indicate mixing of all races in the past An analysis of the progress' of man America would not conclude that the race of man has deteriorated from such limited mixing by inarriagc la the years past From a practical sociological viewpoint usually has the non white male or female proclaiming that "I do not want my daughter marrying a Negro" It is interesting that the counterpart ef the white male marrying a Negro female is usually a major theme of the conversation or comment History reveals that daring the era slavery co habitation of the white male with the colored or Negro femsle was the order of the day." This relationship was accepted to the gratification of all including the white female. The Negro female would bear the children of this mixed parenthood which needless to say were born out of wedlock. Morally, this common event was a sin; however, even the church in a loud voice did not speak out The varied pigmentations of the American Negro today bespeak such a heritage. Statistics indicate that people marry people whom they love regardless of race, aeed or religion.

An Important medical question should be put forth as iollows Will miscegenation or an interbreeding of races, especially Negro and Caucasian in America, cause deterioration or a poor breed of off springs in the future? This is serious question and should be answered without emotion and prejudice. If. poor protoplasm begets poor protoplasm the off springs according to the laws of genetics will be poor protoplasm. This conclusion is not based on race, color, etc custom andor inertia of tradition may Influence directly or Indirectly the decision of a couple toward a "mixed marriage." We must admit from a platform of justice and equality that the final decision on this relationship must be relegated to the individuals Involved. At this stage of our development there are social problems which are baaed on the traditions of racial attitudes, prejudices, discrimination and segregation, etc, of a biased society and sot basic free Christian attitudes of a free society.

In conclusion race, color, creed, etc. are not basic determinants in the science of the off springs from married tndi viduala. Partnership in marriage is a sacred and personal decision and we must respect the rights of aD. NEXT WEEK IAUS HORIZON ctS By P. PRATT1S From time to time, I find myself unable to resist reading a news story about the pocketbook watchdog.

John J. Vffllimi, frora tl tiny wuf of EM ware. For years now, the redoubtable penny seaner has been miming his publicity and Justifying his presence in the Senate by turning the spotlight on the executive branch of the government, to show just bow wasteful it is. I venture to fy thai if the good Senator used the same spectacles at home that be does in the Defense Department, hu Love would fly out the window. 1 The latest discovery of the penny saving Senator is that the Defense Department has wasted ten million dollars.

Thar a lot of the taxpayers', money to throw awayat first glance. The Senator contended. In one In couple of million more where the cost could have been less. stance, mat tne uerense uepanroent naq spent some eight million dollars for pro curement items it didirt neea ana a a I'm a sort of penny plncher myself Mr. Prattle and when I learn that the bureaucrats in Washington are wasting ten million dollars.

I am deeply moved. I wouldn't know how to waste ten million dollars it I had it I asked myself how Secretary McXamara could let the people's money get away like that Then a thought came to me I would see how such a waste would relate to the ordinary guy's income. The Defense Department is budgeted to spend nearly sixty billion dollars, or sixty thousand mutton dollars, this year. It wastes ten million out of sixty thousand million. How much money would the ordinary guy with a 10.000 a year income have to squander to equal the wastefulness of the Defense Ifepartment? Using sixty thousand million as a base.

I think the 0.00O a yeax husband bad an cagieeyed wife wmiid waste $1.66, 1 don't mean Just to throw away that sum, If he spert 11.66 more on a shirt than his wife thought he should, he would be wasting the equivalent of ten millions out of a sixty billion dollar budget If the 10.000 a year husband had an eagleeyed wife who would break the peace of the dinner meal to bewail the fact that in a thoughtless moment he had bought an unnecessary trinket for little Mary, ha would probably, as they say. blow his top. After looking at the "wastefulness" exposed by Senator Williams in this manner. I concluded that although he is doing a necessary job in watch dogging Federal expenses. It is easy for him to mislead you.

The way the Senator projects things sometimes, you'd think the bureaucrats were shoveling money into the Potomac River. Of course, I don't want ten million dollars nor SL66 wasted, but I do believe that in eaih ins'snce there is nothing to get all hot and bothered abtaut. I remember once when I wasted forty dollars and still lived to tell the tale. If the Defense Department wasted its equivalent of my forty dollars, I'm sure that good Senator Williams would woo apoplexy and be grateful for the relief it gave him Of course, all of us taxpayers should take into account just one fact: It is impossible for us really to understand billions. We can grasp millions, but a million dollars has the same puny relationship to a billion dollars that a present day worthless penny has to a ten dollar hill MY VIEW Governor Wallace Of Alabama By Benjamin Mays If Governcr Wallace were a Negro, his behavior Li office would be attributed to race.

He is white, and no racial connotation la connected with his conduct Another thing Governor Wallace proves is the fact that aimoi any white person can be governor of many of our states men who have little or no regard for federal law when that law conflicts with state law. Fauous, Bamett and Wallace prove the point corrdusivefy. We excuse these men by saving they are playing a political game What we are saying is that in politics we uo not expect men to move on convictions of what is the right thing to do: but rather on what is politically profitable. If this is so, honor and integrity are not governing factors. Such men wiU be immortalized in their state capitois and the state historians will give them a huge place.

What Is more offensive, many of these men who defy federal law and stir up the mob are noted "churchmen. Religion seems to have nothing to do with a man behavior In all too many instances. The school boards of Birmingham. 5 '4 :3 Mr. Mays Tuskogee, Huntsville and Mobile apparently were ready to go along with the court decision It appears that ail was quiet in these towns until the Covt.

stepped ia and defied federal law. When the governor of a state says he has just begun to fight desegregation in Alabama and when he calls out state troopers to keep the schools from opening, he says to the white kids that I am with you when you cut up. He says to the KKK that if you start trouble, I am in sympathy with what you do. i It is a philosophy of mine that it isn't the man at the bottom who upsets things, but man at the top. When people are killed as in the cases of the Negroes in Birmingham and those killed on the campus of the University of Mississippi, the persons mdirectly responsible wete the chief executives cf those states.

If the Governors, themselves, had 'obeyed federal law and had called upon the citizens of their states to do the snme, they would have obeyed. Trouble eam, when the New Orleans schools desegregated, because Governor Davis and the LuisianaisUiurepiosed the implementation of federal court It is too bad that there is no ay of restraining bad men in high places. But governor have irnniuniry. They can do anything and get away with it If governors who defy orders of tie 4 States Supreme Court were put in jail, where they should be, they still would be governors and they would run their states In jail. This would make them all heroes and thev wouH be bigger men in the eyes of their ignorant rollovers I am sure some of these recalcitrant governors are itching for a chance to run tr.eir states from jail.

They could then be ek cted governor again or congressmen. This may be one reason why the Federal Govemmert does not arrest them. Maybe in ten or fifteen years we will achieve rolW! maturity even in tre Deep South. Books By J. A.
