It is not often that the columns of a newspaper contain the amount of advertising that is at present found in the Daily and Weekly editions of The Herald; but our. generous business men hare made almost unprecedented demands upon us, and as a consequence, we have been compelled to give a great amount of our papers td them which is usually devoted to reading matter. The rush is. especiallv brisk, this season, and as a paper must to a certain extent derive support from the revenue derived from advertising, we must beg the indulgence of our patrons for a Bbort time. Our large contracts only run through the holi days, after which time, we will again give oar accustomed large amount of reading matter and general news.

Meanwhile, we do not believe any body will lose anything by the present state of affairs, from the fact tbat each house advertised in our columns is substantial and, prosperous, and having a large and tine display of goods, the reader can make choice as to where to secure his holiday presents, and where to receive the best bargains. Tub Herald can cordially recommend each and every house represented in its advertising columns. To Our Subscribers. We have not been accustomed to dunning subscribers, nor do we wish to begin now, but it is almost one 'year since the present management has had posessiou of the paper, and we must call on those in arrears for subscription to come and see us. We have obligations' which must be met, and to get through, our collections must be made.

Though the amount from each is but small, it aggregates a great amount more than we can afford to carry. We are'endeavering to give our readers a paper well worth the price asked for it, and we trust that before the' close of the present year, we may have received all back subscription. Please come in and see us, and let us start out the new year with clean books. While using the telephone Saturday morning we heard dulcet tones dancing over the wires, which resembled the chimes nf many bells and so charmed were we that for a time we imagined ourselves in the most enchanted of places. Later we learned that it was the voice of the musical operator at Peru, and if our boys generally could hear these dulcet strains, we imagine that each Saturday night would see a grand exodus westward.
