Tuesday Evening, December 17, 1957. OGANSPORT PUBLIC LIBRARY AWOL Sarge, Wife on Way To Mexican 'Shangri-La' WASHINGTON (UP) - Author!ties pressed an international search today for an AWOL Air Force sergeant formerly from Indiana, apparently enroute to a Mexican mountain top "shangri- la" to \vr,ite a book. Sgt. David Dwyer, 43, native of Lafayette, In<l., and his wife disappeared from their subburban home at Arlington, Va., Nov. 24. The first indication authorities had of their whereabouts was when Mrs. Dwyer wrote her sister, Mrs. H.E. Clifford, Sunnyvale, Calif. "As you know, Dave is writing a book," Mrs. Dwyer wrote. "We haven't been able to concentrate on it. We had to get away to where it is quiet to work on it. "I cannot disclose our secret place. As you have probably noted, this letter was sent from Texas.. ." Mrs. Dwyer said her husband, a seasoned cave-explorer and hiker, dJicovered tne sangri-la "years ago on one of his one-man safaris." "It has not been seen or inhabited by white men for more than 1,000 years in his estimation. We will have to use a block and tackle to get Black Beauty (the couple's car) to where we are going," she wrote. • . The 1,000 years posed a problem because that would be 500 years before Columbus was credited with discovering America. "You will hear from us sporadically-every two months or so," Mrs. Dwyer wrote. The letter was mailed earlier this month and forwarded to Mrs. Dwyer's son, Anthony Clark, at the University of Alaska. The Dwyers drove away from their apartment after indicating to neighbors they were going cave- exploring in northern Virginia. Police and the Air Force have seen searching for them since ihen. The Air Force said Dwyer lad a "clean" record for his 14 years of service prior to the trip. It listed him as AWOL Nov. 26. Dwyer was Pentagon. stationed at the •P.S.
