IOC 1 1 SATURDAY, JUNE 13, 1992 Television WPTO-TVO fromWPTD Channel 14 will have fewer PBS programs and more documentaries, travel shows and how-to programs. Most of them will come from PBS, the Eastern Educational Network and other program libraries. YOUNG VOTE: Demo cratic presidential candidate Bill Clinton is going after the teeny-boppers. He's accepted an invi- tation from MTV to answer questions from a group of 200 people aged 18 to 24. The one-hour special will air on tape at 10 p.m.

Tuesday. Ta-bitha Soren will moderate. MTV bosses say President Bush and Ross Perot are mulling similar invitations. Bush, who originally declined an appearance on Today, is now "reconsidering it," according to NBC. That statement comes after a week in which both Clinton and Perot made political hay on the morning show.

Clinton chatted with Bryant Gumbel and viewers for an hour Tuesday, and Ross Perot held forth Thursday. IT'S A DREAM: The third season premiere of HBO's funny Dream On last Saturday drew higher ratings than CBS, ABC or NBC in the homes of HBO subscribers. Dream On topped Sisters, The Commish and Midway. The measurement encompassed just the 17.5 million homes in the United States with access to HBO. TEEN TURMOIL: Channel 45 has picked up Swans Crossing, a syndicated series billed as "the first daily live-action serial developed for pre-teensteens." It'll air at By Tom Hopkins DAYTON DAILY NEWS The Dayton area will get, in effect, a second public television station July 1.

That's when WPTO-TV (Channel 14) in Oxford will launch its own program schedule separate from its sister station in Dayton, WPTD-TV (Channel 16). Both nonprofit stations have been operated by Greater Dayton Public Television Inc. since they merged in 1975, simulcasting most of their programs to save costs. Channel 14, which has studios on the Miami University campus, will emphasize educational and instructional programming and will broadcast many programs not seen on Channel 16. The Dayton station will continue to broadcast most of the PBS lineup as well as other programs, with few changes.

"It's a real exciting move, one that we've been looking at for some time," said Jerry War-eham, president and general manager of Greater Dayton Public Television. "Channel 14 will have a completely different program schedule." Wareham said the program split "will give viewers in the Oxford, Middletown and Hamilton areas more choice, and will allow Greater Dayton Public Television to better respond to educational needs." For the time being, Channel 14 is receivable only over the air in the Oxford, Hamilton and Middletown areas. Continental and Viacom Cable don't carry the station, because of the programming overlap with Channel 16. However, both Continental and Viacom are night weekends. Channel 14 will have fewer PBS programs and more documentaries, travel shows and how-to programs.

Most of them will come from PBS, the Eastern Educational Network and other program libraries. They include Gourmet Cooking, The Embroidery Studio, Landscape with Norma, Adventures in Scale Modeling, Decorating With Mary Gilliat, The Magic of Acrylic Painting, The Bridge Class, Rod Reel, Crafting for the '90s, Quilt in a Day and To Life! Yoga With Priscilla Patrick. Many programs will continue to be broadcast on both stations in different time periods. The Nightly Business Report and The Mac-NeilLehrer NewsHour will air weeknights in the p.m. slot on Channel 14 while continuing to air on Channel 16 from 6 to 7:30.

Other familiar programs to continue on both stations include Firing Line, Austin City Limits, Wild America, The McLaughlin Group A Walk Through the 20th Century With Bill Moyers, Listening to America, and popular children's shows like Sesame Street, Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, Lamb Chop's Play-Along and Reading Rainbow. Wareham said the PBS satellite system will be replaced in 1993, "And that's really going to expand the number of educational programs available to us. That's an exciting prospect, and having two channels will enable us to better utilize the service." The stations present commercial-free programs and get most of their operating money from viewer donations, taxpayer funds and corporation grants. John McEnroe 5:30 p.m. weekdays for 13 weeks beginning June 29.

It's the story of teenage turmoil in a group of well-to-do middle schoolers in an East Coast village. Sounds like Beverly Hills, 90210 for the Nintendo set. ALL-AMERICAN GUY: Mr. Couch Potato liked what he heard during John McEnroe's no-nonsense commentary on NBC during the French Open tennis. It probably won him a lot of fans who used to hate his guts.

Now, McEnroe has inked a deal to join the USA Network's announcing team for the U.S. Open beginning Aug. 31 only after he's been ousted, of course. He's a four-time U.S. Open champ himself.

Other analysts are Vitas Ger-ulaitis and Tracy Austin. By Tom Hopkins with wire senices rebuilding their 35-channel systems and hope to have nearly 60 channels in the next three years. "Our hope is that as the cable systems expand, they'll include it in the cable lineup," Wareham said. The split has been in the planning stages for five years, but technical adjustments at Channel 16's downtown Telecenter had to be made first. Another problem has been that Channel 16's signal wasn't strong enough to reach the Oxford area and the Channel 14 signal couldn't reach Dayton.

Technical improvements on Channel 16, including a new transmitting tower and transmitter in West Dayton, have enabled most viewers in the Oxford area to receive the Dayton station, but the Channel 14 tower is still only 300 feet high. The Oxford station will broadcast from 7 a.m. to midnight weekdays and 8 a.m. to mid FM station planning a fall debut By Bob Batz DAYTON DAILY NEWS The Dayton area is getting a new FM radio station. The station, being developed by Miami Valley Communications, will have its studios and offices in Englewood.

The six-watt station's signal will reach south of Dayton and also will cover Preble and Miami Counties, according to Sharon Zimmers, president of Miami Valley Communications Inc. Zimmers is assistant superintendent of the Vandalia Butler Schools. She's also a Harrison Twp. trustee. This is her first venture into radio.

Zimmers said she has partners in the company, but declined to reveal their names. She said the station, which will employ 12 to 15, will go on the air sometime in the fall. The station will be at 94.5 on the dial but its call letters have not yet been determined, she said. "The FCC assigns call letters but we didn't like the ones we got, so we asked for a different set of letters and the FCC hasn't gotten back to us," Zimmers said. Still to be decided is the station's format.

"We're looking around for a niche. We'll start a market survey soon," she said. "Whatever the format, it will be geared to serve the northwest Montgomery County area." Zimmers said local school and governmental activities will be an important part of the station's coverage. "At six watts we won't be up there with the big FMs, but we'll be able to do what we want to do," she said. The area's last new station WROU-FM (92.1) went on the air Dec.
