"I could raise the amount to $60,000 this week if I wished to," said Dr. Plantz today, "but there is a reason why it is not at this amount now.

There are many men who have offered $1,000 and even as high as $5,000, where they are able to give much more. I cannot take these gifts as these men -must give more, so I am holding off and will in time, I. think, secure their pledge for more consequential amounts." REV. G. FRITCHIE COMES HERE Will.

Twenty-first Wisconsin Volunteers to Convene In Appleton Elaborate Program Being Planned. Appleton, April 23.

The reunion of the Twenty-first regiment, Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, will take place in this city on Thursday and Friday, Sept. 19 and 20. This was definitely decided yesterday afternoon at the meeting of the local members of the regimental association. All that can be said is that the elaborateness of the event depends solely upon the success of the finance committee in their solicitation of funds. The reunion is in commemoration of the anniversary of the battle of Chicka-maugua and will attract no less than two hundred outsiders to Appleton on the day set for the celebration.

It is a difficult matter to say just what localities this event will affect as there are members of the regiment residing throughout the United States from coast to coast and if it is within their physical powers to do so, they generally make it a point to attend. There is every reason to believe that the local promoters of the event will do all in their power to make the coming reunion a success and as there is consid--erable intervening time, there seems to be no reason why their efforts will not be met with success. FIRST CLASS IS OUT J0 YEARS SEMI-CENTENNIAL OF LAWRENCE'S FIRST GRADUATES. Elaborate Program Will be Prepared for Coming Commencement. Meeting Tomorrow Night.

Appleton, Tuesday, April 23. The most elaborate commencement in the history of Lawrence university is being planned for next June and with this end in view a meeting of the resident alumni has been called for 8 o'clock tomorrow night to be held in the Literature room at University hall. The fiftieth anniversary of the graduation of the first class to leave Lawrence will be observed next June and every effort will be made to have a fitting and interesting program arranged for this occasion. The authorities of Lawrence will make every effort to have an unusual number of graduates come to Appleton for the next commencement. Dr. Samuel Plantz last week secured another pledge of $16,000 toward the fund of $150,000 which the university is raising as the condition to secure the $50,000 donation from the General Educational Board of New York. Another pledge of $10,000 has been made conditiona'l.

A Wisconsin man has promised to give the last $10,000, that is, after $140,000 is raised, he will give $10,000 to complete the sum of $150,000, For several reasons the names of the donors are withheld. At the time they pledged themselves to the amounts they requested that their names be not mentioned, as one gift of any consequence brings a horde of request for money through the publicity given the donor. There has been $1,000 donated in MEASLES AMONG CHILDREN Many in City Said to be Afflicted With Disease. Appleton, Tuesday, April. 23.

An incipient epidemic of measles has started among the children in the city, but it Is believed it will be con-i trolled before it spreads to an alarming extent. It seems to have originated at St. Mary's parochial school and in the second grade there are only nine scholars of the entire grade still attending, the balance suffering with measles or having sisters or brothers who are con-fined with the disease. So far as is known the disease has not' spread to the public schools and it Is thought any widespread epidemic will be averted this spring..
