MARIE, $230,295 Approved For Rudyard School RUDYARD Federal funds amounting to $230.295 have been! officially approved for an addition on the Turner-Howson mentary School here and work i will begin as soon as possible this spring or summer. superintendent Harris Kabl announced today. A library, six classrooms, and three special education rooms will be constructed on the south Death Claims Viola Johnson VIOLA JOHNSON NEWBERRY Viola son, 65, a Newberry public schools teacher for 35 years, died Friday at the Tahquamenon General Hospital following a short illness. She had taught school in Newberry since 1920, the same year she was graduated in teaching from Northern Michigan University.

Most of her teaching career was in junior high school library, a post she had held at times for a number of years. During her career, Mrs. Johnson taught for one year in Sault Ste. Marie, and she served for one term as Luce county school commissioner. An able musician, she served for a great number of years as junior high pianist and for other functions.

She was born June 3, 1900 in Laurium, spent her early years in Ishpeming and was a graduate of Ishpeming High School. In 1924 she was married to Walter Johnson of Newberry. He died in 1956. She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, where for several years she was church organist; a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Order of Eastern Star, where she was also organist for many years. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs.

Charles R. (Mary) Chedister of Minneapolis; two sisters, Mrs. George R. Anderson of Ann Arbor and Mrs. William 11.

Rikki of Palmer; two brothers, Dr. Osmo I. Niemi of Gwinn and Elvin S. Niemi of Kiog City, and three granddaughters. at the Messiah Lutheran Church Funeral services will be with the Rev.

Fred G. Olson officiating, Monday at 2:30 p.m Burial will be in the Forest Home Cemetery. Friends may call at the Beau lieu Funeral Home from 3 to 9 p.m. Sunday. The personnel of the Newberry High School are establishing a Junior High Award for Outstanding Achievement in Mathematics in remembrance of Mrs.

Walter (Viola) Johnson. Those wishing to contribute to the memorial fund may send checks to Newberry School, Memorial Award, Newberry, Mich. Superintendent J. L. DeCook announced today that Newberry Public Schools will close al 2 p.m.

Monday to allow teachers and students to attend funeral services for Mrs. Johnson, side of the building, running west. Including the storage and lounge areas, the new section of building will cover 13.100 square i feet. The three special education rooms will be built and equipped for remedial mathematics. speech correction and remedial: reading.

Kahl said. This grant also allows for 59.. 400 square feet of blacktopping south of the Rudyard High School for parking. tennis courts and band practice. The addition, which will accommodate approximately 210 pupils, should require around six months to complete under normal building conditions.

Kahl said. NABBED FOR DRINKING Two Kincheloe AFB airmen, Merrill W. Farnsworth, 21, and George HI. Wotten, 20, were rested by city police about 10:20 p.m. Friday when patrol; car officers spotted Farnsworth apparently drinking in an auto-! mobile driven by Wotten on E.

1 Portage Ave. The police report said quantity of beer was found in the car. Farnsworth was charg. ed with drinking on a public highway and Wotten booked for minor transporting intoxicants in a motor vehicle. A third occupant of the car was not held.

3-Car Crash Sheriff Stanley McKee today reported a three-car crash about 4:20 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of Three Mile Road and Mackinac Trail. involving cars operated by William J. Wolfe, 753rd Radar Squadron, Woodrow Peterson and William Ware, 921 Swinton St. According to the sheriff's report, the Peterson car, easthound on Three Mile and stopped for the stop sign before turning into Mackinac Trail, was struck in the rear by the Wolfe auto.

Both drivers got out to examine damage, when the Ware vehicle, also eastbound, struck the Wolfe car, driving it again into the the rear of the Peterson auto. Because of blizzard conditions prevailing at the time. no tickets were issued, the sheriff said. Crash Report Three minor traffic mishaps were reported by city police today, the first a two collision between autos operated by Phillip W. Niemi.

114 W. 10th, and James G. Melin, 1117 Ashmun on Davilt St. about 3:45 p.m. Thursday.

The police report said both cars were headed south on Daviti. The Melin car, stopped due to zero visibility caused by blowing snow. was struck in the rear by the Niemi auto. No citations were issued, police said. The second crash was a collision between cars driven by Donald E.

Wieneke, 724 Cedar and Roberta Flowers, Saull Route 1, on E. Portage. just west of Bingham about 12:40 p.m. Friday. The police report said the Flowers car.

westbound on Portage, had stopped to allow a car ahead to make a turn into a driveway. The Wieneke auto, alSo westbound, was unable to stop and collided with the rear of the Flowers car. No tickets were issued, police said. The third mishap was a rearend collision type between cars operated by Donnel C. Howe.

3128 Lakeshore Drive. and Signe M. Cady, of Trenary. at the intersection of W. Easterday and Ryan about 2:10 p.m.

Friday. The accident report said the Cady car, headed east on W. Easterday and stopped for the traffic light at Ryan, was struck from the rear by the Howe auto. which was unable to stop because of icy road conditions. No tickets were issued, police said.

(Bertha) Me-! Donald of Sault, Mrs. Lee (Ella) McClelland of Desbarets. a brother, John Lewis ci the Sault, and two step-sisters and one step-brother. A son, David Garrett, preceded her in death in 1960. 1 Mrs.

Kirkpatrick was married; to Robert Garrett on June 9, 1913 and he died Nov. 24, 1928. was married to Albert Kirkpatrick on May 20, 1931. He died Jan, 8, 1964. She was a member of the McCarron Methodist Church.

James M. (May McKerchie, 67, of 302 E. Easterday Ave. died al War Me. morial Hospital today following a long illness.

She was born in Sault Ste. Maric, Ont. July 22, 1898 and was a lifclong resident of the Sault arca. She was a member of St. James' Episcopal Church, the Waltonettes and the Hay Lake Grange.

She is survived by her busband, James; two daughters, Mrs. Margaret Case of Chesterlon, Ind. and Mrs. licnry (Jean) ley of Kenora, Ont. and a sister, Mrs.

Lars Grinde of Pine River, Minn. Friends may call at the Hovie Funeral Home beginning at 3 p.m. Funeral services are scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Monday at St. James' Episcopal Church, the Rev.

IGNACE Funeral services for Walter Blade, 51, of Muskegon, who died Jan. 21 in 3 Muskegon Hotel of a heart attack, were held Friday at 1 p.m. at the Grace Brethern Church at Ozark. Burial was in Lakeriew Cemetery, Trout Lake. Mr.

Blade was born Sept. 18, 1914 in Bitely, Mich. and was a steamfitter-welder by trade. He WAS a member of A.F. of L.

Local 70 of Grand Rapids. Surviving are his widow, Wilma; a daughter, Mrs. James (Sandra) Thomas, and son, Walter both of Muskegon; five grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Joseph (Winona) Vincent of Holland, Mich. and Mrs.

Duncan (Gertrude) McMillan of Chicago: three brothers, Francis Kenneth, Bernard of Lincoln, Mich. and William of Chicago. GIRL INJURED ST. IGNACE Gwen Catton. 7 year old daughter of Mr.

and Mrs. Dave Catton, suffered a deep scalp laceration, when she accidently fell from her bed and struck her head on the bed frame Wednesday evening. She was treated at the Mackinac Straits hospital, where 11 stitchcs were required to close the wound and is now recuperating at home.
