Jenkins, chairman scecretary of the newly formed group. The fund was lormed to erect a granite marker on the northwest corner of Sycamore and Wythe Streets about 100 yards from where Roberts lived on Union Street. Roberts was born a free black in Norfolk in 1809, but spent most of his early life in peters- burg. He later sailed to the then African colony of liberia. he was to become iiberia's first black governor and was named the new country's first president when they gained independence.

He was an acknowledged statesman, politician and diplomat whose career in public life is likened to that of George Washington's. The fund has received a grant from the city and is asking contributions to enable it to publish a brochure which will be distributed to students, institutional residents and made available at cost at local tourism sites. Jenkins said the fund hopes to have this accomplished by next spring and are asking contributions be made prior to Oct. 31.
