According to Penn State wide receiver Michael Timpson. the 1988 Nittany Lions will survive on "heart and soul." That's certainly fitting, considering that on Saturday night, the Lions broke Virginia's heart and robbed it of its soul in front of 45,000 fans. The Lions blasted out to an early lead, then poured it on in the second quarter to open their 1988 season with a 42-14 rout of the seemingly helpless Cavaliers. Two sophomore running backs Gary Brown and Sam Gash combined for five touchdowns as Penn State's offense hardly seemed to miss injured tailback Blair Thomas. In fact, by successfully replacing Thomas at Virginia's Scott Stadium Saturday, Brown and Gash may" have personified the type of youthful enthusasm and -talent Timpson thinks can carry the Lions a long way this season.

By the end of the first quarter Saturday, there was little doubt the Lions would get what they wanted, Scoring three quick first quarter touchdowns, Penn State opened a quick 21-0 lead and cruised to its fifth straight opening-day win.
