There are 328 days left in the year. Today's Highlight in History: Wilson Feb. 6, 1911, the Ronald 40th Reagan, president of the United States, was born in Tampico, Ill.

On this date: In 1756, America's third vice president, Aaron Burr, was born in Newark, N.J. In 1778, the United States won official recognition from France with the signing of a Treaty of Alliance in Paris. In 1788, Massachusetts became the sixth state to ratify the U.S. Constitution. In 1899, a peace treaty between the United States and Spain was ratified by the U.S.

Senate. In 1933, the 20th Amendment to the Constitution, the socalled "lame duck" amendment, was proclaimed in effect by Secretary of State Henry Stimson. In 1952, Britain's King George VI died; he was succeeded by his daughter, Elizabeth II. In 1959, the United States successfully testfired for the first time a Titan intercontinental ballistic missile from Cape Canaveral, Fla. In 1978, Muriel Humphrey took the oath of office as a United States senator from Minnesota, filling the seat of her late husband, former Vice President Hubert Humphrey.

McIntosh James L. McIntosh, 72, passed away on Feb. 4, 2009, at the Kalispell Regional Medical Center in Kalispell. He was born Nov. 9, 1936, to Charles J.

and Vera A. (Domain) McIntosh. James grew up in Helena, where he also attended high school. He served in the Navy in 1954 and 1955. James married Florence Evelyn Powell in 1958.

He worked construction jobs until moving to Kalispell where he was employed at Pacific Produce. Afterward he worked professionally as an artist until his interest turned toward helping others, and he started on LaVerna Fay Nelsen Moothart LaVerna Fay Nelsen Moothart, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt, passed away Friday Jan. 30, 2009, after a brief illness. LaVerna was born to Uffe and Getta (LeVang) Nelsen on Oct. 8, 1939, in Scobey.

She was raised in northeastern Montana, attending school in Antelope, Scobey, Ritchie, Medicine Lake and Froid. LaVerna graduated from Froid High School in 1957. While in school, LaVerna met Dick Moothart. After a courtship of rabbit hunting and rides in his '50 Chevy, they were married in Froid on Dec. 29, 1958.

Dick and LaVerna celebrated 50 years of mar- riage with a chuckwagon dinner and a champagne toast at their family reunion this past summer. In their early years, the couple moved to Wolf Point where LaVerna worked for MDU. Their next move was to Fort Smith, where Dick worked at Yellowtail Dam, and LaVerna raised the children, while working part -time as a cook for the school. In 1976, Dick, LaVerna and the children moved to Helena. LaVerna took a job with the U.S. Forest Service, where she worked as a purchasing agent.

LaVerna loved her job, and she made many lifelong friends there. She retired after 20 years of service and many awards. One of the greatest joys of LaVerna's life was her family. LaVerna was very proud of her heritage and votes, it would need 73 votes in the House to appear on the ballot. That is highly unlikely with the politically charged redistricting issue because the House is evenly split with 50 Democrats and 50 Republicans.

Redistricting is required every 10 years after a new federal census. Its goal is to adjust the districts so they reflect population changes. With today's computer technology, Balyeat said experts have said it easy to propose districts that vary by no more than plus or minus 1 percent from the ideal -sized district. Sen. Her grandsons, Justin, Paul and Tom Hughes, and granddaughters, Callie and Connie Moothart, loved to come to grandma's house, especially at Christmastime.

Hours were spent around the dining room table playing cards and dominos while eating all of her delicious treats. Family reunions were also very special times. LaVerna enjoyed bringing everyone together. LaVerna was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Allan; son, Shawn; and daughter, Sheri.
