Ur M3B HP li rttflvrtv TWENTIETH TEAR UNITED SHIES KES PROTEST Against the Interference of British War Ships with Our Commerce NOTE SENT GREAT State Department Intimates that Patience of United States Is Exhausted The United States government Monday dispatched a long note to Great Britain insisting on an early improvement of the treatment of American commerce by the British fleet It gave warning that much feelinir hail been moused in this country and that public criticism was general over unwarranted interference with the legitimate foreign trade of the United States The document constituting the strongest representations on this subject made by the United States to any of the belligerents since the Outbreak of the war was cabled to Ambassador Page to be formerly presented to Sir Edward Grey British foreign secsetary Its preparation was begun a month ago by Soicitor Cone Johnson Counsellor Robert Lansing and Secretary Bryan and finally had the personal attention of President Wilson who revised its phraseology with minute care As the detailed point of view of the -United States in numerous specific cases of detentions and seizures of cargoes had been set forth in a series of emphatic protests most of which have gone unheeded Mondays communication was couched in general terms covering the entire subject of the relations between the United States and Great Britain as affected by he lattcrs naval policy considered highly objectionable bv this government Since FrahceTuis adopred practically the same decn es in contraband as has Gieat Britain Mondays note is virtually a statement intended for all the members of the triple entente British Public Surprised A dispatch dated London Eng December 29th states that the American note protesting against the British treatment of American commerce and insisting on on earlv improvement enme as a complete surprise to the British public today as there had been virtually no intimation of any friction that has arisen between the two governments Placards posted in the evening papers are given over exclusively to the American note and the newspapers gave it the largest headlines they have given any news during the past month and consequently the British people regard this as one of the most important occurrences during the whole war Nothing of the kind since Clevelands Venezuelan message produced such a sensation Indemnities Aro Possible The president appealed Tuesday to American shippers of non-contraband goods such as cotton not to allow their goods to be mixed with contraband articles The United States government he announced could deal confidently with the treatment of American commerce by Great Britain only if supported by absolutely honest manifests State department officials ventured no guess as to the size of the damage claims being accumulated by the detention of American cargoes but the president himself predicted that millions of dollars in private indemnities would eventually have to be paid by Great Britain if the correctness of the American position as explained in its note would be maintained as he confidently believed it would be as it is based on principles of international law hitherto generally accepted A confident feeling was expressed in diplomatic quarters that steps would be taken by other leading na tions in this hemisphere as well as by some of the European neutrals to point out to Great Britain their acquiescence in the American point of view LADIES AID SOCIETY rssr if GOOD TIMES COMING Get Ready for the Most Tremendous Business that Any Nation Ever Had What is the matter with the United States As I have been residing in London since the beginning of the war I have been hearing this question asked on all sides I have never heard any satisfactory answer No one seems to know Why are the American factories not running night and day Why are the railroads notopening up new territories and getting ready for the millions of immigrants who have already made up their minds to leave Riirnno na annn na hp wnr in nvpr Why are there not 50 American drummers in London right now trying to sell 200000000 worth of American goods in place of the goods that were bought last year from Germany and Austria From the European point of view the United States is a haven of peace and security and prosperity It has no troubles that it dare mention to Belgium or Austria or France or Germany or Servia or Great Britain or Russia Every tenth Briton has enlisted Every tenth Frenchman is at the front Every tenth Belgian is dead What does the United StateB know of trouble If I could afford it I would charter the Mauretania and Lusitania and convey a party of 5000 Amorian advertisers to Europe for a trip of education I would give them a week in London a week in Paris and a week in Antwerp I would let them look at th Uni ted States from the scene of war I would give them a look at real trouble I would let them see trains ten nt a time five minutes apart packed with the maimed and the dving I would let them hear from fragmentary survivors the incredible story of battlefields 150 mile wide and armies that are greater than the entire population of Texas I would let them see graves 100 yards long and full and Belgium the country that was nothing now but 12000 square miles of wreckage Then when they began to under stand to some slight extent the magnitude and nwfulncss of this war I would say to them No go back and appreciate the United States Realize your opportunities Dont stnrtdigging trenches when nobody is firing at you Dont fall down when you have not been hit Dont be blind to the most glorious chance you have ever had in your life Get ready for the most tremendous business boom that any nntion ever had Build your factories digger Train more salesmen Borrow more money Go ahead and thank God that you are alive and that your family is alive and that you are living in a land that is at peace at a time when nearly
