a band ot cowpuncbers who In 1BS0 discovered a suit ot Spanish mall similar to the armor worn by Coro nados men whllo cleaning out the Almocitas spring fn what la now known as Holdhani county Is to fig ure prominently In the annals ot anthropological history of the south west Mr Hast la his earlier years In Texas like runny others who have since won distinction and become leading citizen In different parts ot the country followed cowpunchlng a a means ot livelihood It was during 1880 that he and several other cow punchers while engaged In cleaning out tho Almocitas spring discovered tho pmwr which will result In his name going down In history as much curiosity and Interest has been aroused In bis fnd at this lato date Mr East fays that new and then a piece ot Spanish armor was found on a Comancho Indian and he Is not sure whether the piece found by him self and his colleagues came direct ly from one of Coronados men or belonged to a Red skin It was at first thought that tho wearer must have fallen Into the spring and drowned but a thorough search ol tho spring failed to reveal any por tlons of a human body Tho Forest and Streiin magazine Is planning the publcatlon ot a series of articles on tho anthropologl cal history of the southwest and Mr East Is in receipt ot a tetter from the editor asking for Information on the armor The letter follows New York June 2nd 1909 Mr James II East DouslasAriz Dear itir For socie jearg I have been I looking up certain matters connected with tho history of the old southwest and have come across occasional references to Spanish armor found within what is now tho United States territory- In the course ot these Inquiries I got into communication with Mr George Flndlay of 148 Market street Chicago III who kindly took much interest in attempting to cover the date and other particulars about the finding of some Spanish armor In western Texas Through MJr Hndlays kindness I have re reived a copy of jour letter to him of May 17th which gives almost the first definite Information I have with regard to this And You give tne date atid description of the shirt ot mall and give It very clearly but may I ask a few further questions Do yoj recall whether ou gathered from what jou saw of the shirt at the time that the scales of which are armor was composed were fastened to some lining of leather oi between the Wisconsin claim on th was each scale according to your recollection meted to the four ad Joining scales two above and below and two at the sides This scarcely seems likely Don oj recall whether the shirt appeared to have sleeves That Is to say to cover tho arms and It so did tho sleeves apparently reach to the elbow orto the wrist I have been told of one suit ot armor long- in possesson of the Cbeycnnos that the shirt was a scale armor the scales Vald to be as big as a quarter but there were solid -arm pieces coming down to the elbow which were attached to the shirt In this case there were also solid leg -pieces covering the thigh and a steel tap Could you say at what time of the SECRETARY Y0UH6S RETURNS FROM PHOENIX Juno 9 Territorial St relary George Young returned yesterday afternoon from a trip ot several weeks In the east on private business Having satisfactorily disposed of his own affairs ho devoted some time to a general lnquirv Into bust ness conditions throughout tho coun try That tho depression is not yet over is evident but at the same time it is disappearing and confidence Is slowly returning The Inquiries of Mr Yojng were made ot financiers and of traveling salesmen and the managers ot tlie larger department stores of Chicago and New York Commercial travelers contribute tho best barometer of trade conditions and the department store managers tho next best In tho opinion of Mr Young tne cojntrv Is divided into two parts with Chicago on the dividing line East ot Chicago times are not good and much complaint is heard Hut west of Chicago people arc forgetting Jhat there was a panc and the further west one comes the meraorj of Its becomes more Indistinct There are an ing opinions of the effect of the tariff discussion on trade but it Is generally agreed that there will be a boom in business after tho tariff bH has been completed and there Is a general lmpres slon that the bill will be a good one The impression Is that tho tariff law as rassed will be greatly changed In the direction of a downward revision after it leaves the senate that the present discussion In the senate is more for tho purpose of emphasizing the facts of the republican majority in the principle of protection and that after that has been dono the real revision of the bill will be be gun In earnest Speaking again of the return of rosperlty Mr Young said It seemed 1758
