She was born on June 5, 1919, in Auburndale, the daughter of Reuben and Joyce Connor. Betty received a BS degree in Home Economics from the University of Wisconsin in 1939. She gave her time and energy to many organizations including the Dane County chapter of the American Red Cross, the Arboretum; the PEO and the AAUW. She was proud of working the polls every election she could and had been active in the Republican Party.

Betty possessed an avid and lifelong passion for the natural world which she shared with her children and grandchildren. She created a beautiful rock garden on North Franklin Avenue, well-known and loved by neighbors. Betty was a veteran world traveler, visiting every continent at least once, and enjoyed sharing her travels with the community. She frequently traveled with her daughters and their families, and joined her daughter, Mary on Earthwatch trips and other scientific research expeditions. Betty was fascinated by animals, particularly giraffes, and contributed to the building of the new giraffe house at the Henry Vilas Zoo, which she loved to visit.

The list of people whom she taught to drive, cook, sew, knit, read, garden and think rationally and reasonably are too numerous to mention here, but we know who we are and are forever grateful, both for the skill sets and the memories. Betty was preceded in death by her husband of many years, Dr. Warren E. Gilson; her sister, Gene McGuire of Shawano; her brother, Roger Connor of Akron, Ohio; and her daughter, Kathy (Peter) Lovance of Hartland. She is survived by sisters, Mary Taylor of Rockford, Joyce Bethke of Madison, and Sarah Connor of Waukesha.

She is also survived by her daughter, Mary (Bruce) Feay of Naperville, her son, Robert (Sharon) Gilson of Middieton; grandchildren, Molly Gilson, Elizabeth Lovance, Daniel Gilson, and Mich Lovance; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was well-loved by all who knew her and will be greatly missed. Her family wishes to thank the staff at Capitol Lakes Retirement Center, Meriter Hospital, and HospiceCare for all of their efforts and kindness. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Betty's memory to the Chapter P.E.O. Scholarship Fund and the University of Wisconsin Allen Centennial Gardens.

FOND DU LAC Doris Henke of Fond du Lac passed away on Friday, June 26. 2009. She was 84 years young. On her last days, she still managed to touch the hearts of those who cared for her. The doctors and nurses often remarked on her strength, determination, and her relentless ability to smile.

Doris was born on Oct. 4.1924, the daughter of the late William and Helen Engel. On July 22, 1950, Doris married Leo "Hans" Henke, and together raised three children, Leo, Jewel, and Brenda. Doris had many passions. She loved to make dessert bars and cookies; she loved giving them to neighbors and friends even more. She loved to walk and ride her exercise bike. The miles walked on the streets in the neighborhood were countless; the miles on her exercise bike were well over 20,000. Doris also loved spending time with her close friends and sister, Rosie, eating out, shopping and playing cards.

If Doris were not involved with any of these passions, odds would have it that she would be reading another book. Doris is survived by her two loving daughters, Jewel Henke of Platteville and Brenda (Steve) Burbach of Plains, a sister, Rosemary Zehren of Fond du Lac; grandchildren, Bronson Burbach, Josh (Danielle) Burbach, Kyle Burbach, Stacy (Scott) Zacharias, Lori Henke, Jim Pionke and Cory (Kelly) Henke; 10 great- grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; special friends, Elaine Schry, Nancy Gage and Evelyn Markhardt; and good neighbors who frequently gave a helping hand, especially Dave Steffens and Dale Nehls. Witnesses reported the sinking boat and said its occupants were in the water around 6:09 p.m. The Sheriff's Office Marine and Trail Enforcement personnel, who had been patrolling the lake, rescued three people who were in the water, while the other four swam about 100 yards to shore, the Sheriff's Office said. The UW-Madison students launched two "floating islands" last week that were made of recycled plastic and marsh grasses. The islands are intended to foster plant growth and to provide wildlife habitats. The project is led by the UW New Orleans Sustainable Restoration Workshop.

It's been sending students to the bayou since 2006. Project coordinator J. Ashleigh Ross says the project can serve as a model to other communities dealing with environmental issues. She says the students are encouraged to do other research while they're in Louisiana. Projects include determining land ownership and taking community surveys.

Hot weather causing algae, bacteria on lakes, rivers Wisconsin outdoor experts say the recent hot weather has caused water- -related concerns on some lakes and rivers. The Department of Natural Resources says there have been outbreaks of blue- green algae on some lakes in southern Wisconsin. The DNR says the algae is unsightly and smelly, can reduce oxygen levels in lakes and sometimes produces toxins. People and their pets should avoid those waters. The DNR also says an outbreak of a naturally occurring bacteria called columnaris has caused some fish kills in northern lakes but it does not pose a threat to people or pets.

The agency says the bacteria generally does not cause long damage to the fishery. DNR warns against keeping bird feeders during summer SPOONER State wildlife officials say animals face a new danger this summer: bird feeders. The Department of Natural Resources says some feeders can accidentally kill other wildlife such as raccoons and skunks and even bear cubs. The agency points to two cases in northwestern Wisconsin where bear cubs got their heads stuck in feeders while searching for food. In one case the cub's mother freed it.

In the other, agency workers had to tranquilize the mother and cub and then remove the feeder. DNR Wildlife Technician Robert Hanson says people shouldn't feed birds or any other animals during the summer. They know how to forage for themselves well enough. If people insist on feeders, they should be on strong poles at least 8 feet high. Grants available for low-wage earners to attend tech classes New grants are available for low -wage earners to help pay for technical college classes in the fall.

The money can be used for tuition, fees, books and supplies. Eligible areas of study are those identified as being high demand occupations, including health care, biotechnology and energy.

In addition to the grants, up to $250 per applicant is available to pay for the cost of tools and uniforms, exam fees, transportation and child care. Application sites can be found at www.jobcenter ofwisconsin.com. Associated Press.
