FORD DEAD. One of the Oldest Newspaper Men of tho Stato Passes Away. Thomas P. Ford, one of the oldest newspaper men of California, died yesr day of quinsy at Vina, where he occupied the position of nited States Storekeeper aud Gauger in the luternal Keveuew service. Mr.

Ford was born in Richland County, Ohio, and was 6'S years of age. He came to California at an early day and passed twenty-seven years of his lite iv this city, living for a lime after coming to this State at North Bloomlield. He was bookkeeper under State Superintendent of Printing iTrank Thompson. For several years, up to the last few months, he published the Mountain Tribune, at Bieber, Lassen County, in this State. He was an active Democratic politician, being the only Democrat out of a large family of brothers.

He was an enthusiastic Mason, aud a member of Edeu Lodge, No. 220, F. and A. Eden, Modoc County. Ho will be buried by Tehama Lodge, F.

aud A. of this city. SUPREME COURT DECISION. A Glenn County Lawsuit to Quiet Title to Lund. The Supreme Court has decided tho case of Fred.

plaintill aud appellant, vs. John McMullin, defendant and respondent, a Glenn County case to quiet title. Tho defendant's answer denied that ho had any interest in the land in question except a certificate of sale for taxes iv the Irrigation district. The court found that defendant was entitled to his costs, and plaiutiil' appealed. The Supreme Court held that plaintiff had a proper appeal and that he was entitled to a judgment without, any reserraation.

The steamers Modoc, Acme and Herald brought up 20,000 boxes of fruit from the river ranches on Sunday. The fruit growers are making up for lost time in packing their crop. CLOSING DAYS OF THE CITY SCHOOLS Teachers Now Preparing Their Lists of Promotion, Exercises to Take riaeo the Present and Sutter Grammar Schools. The present week will conclude the school year in this city, and for several days to come the lists of names of pupils who have earned promotion will be coming in from Principals and teachers.

In all the schools there will be the usual closing exercises by bright girls and boys, who have been for weeks looking forward impatiently for their annual vacation of three months. When it begins families will leave the city for the seashore or the mountains, where the hard-worked teachers and pupils will rest and recuperate from their i arduous labors of the year. The iirst public exercises announced are those of the Butter Grammar School, Twenty-first and streets, of which Professor Julian W. Johnson is Principal. They will be held in the school to-morrow, commencing at lv o'clock in the forenoon.
