Carolina coach reassigned Bob Waters, who coached Western Carolina's football team for 20 years despite the Increasing effects of a degenerative nerve disorder popularly known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, was officially reassigned by the school on Thursday. "Coach Waters provided in an exemplary manner for many years the necessary level of leadership and Instruction which a head coach must give to his coaching staff and players," Western Carolina Chancellor Myron Coulter said.

Waters has been battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis for the last five years. There is no known cure for the disease, nienkamed for baseball Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig, who died from the disorder. Waters cannot use his arms or legs. He uses a portable respirator and must have someone with him at all times. "I am extremely disappointed that I will not be allowed to coach the 1989 football team," Waters said.

"The decision should have been left to me, whether I could coach or not. What can be gained by my remaining as head coach for the 1989 season far outweighs what we will lose." University of Colorado quarterback Sal Aunese has been diagnosed as having a life-threatening form of stomach cancer, which has spread to his lungs and lymph nodes near the lungs. Dr. Wayne Gersoff, an orthopedic surgeon and a CU team physician, said Aunese, 20, Is scheduled to begin chemotherapy treatments next week at University Hospital. The 5-foot-ll, 195-pounder from Oceanside, passed for 1,004 yards last fall and amassed 1,401 yards of total offense, the most at CU in a decade.

The brother of Indiana guard Jay Edwards contacted professional agents about NBA prospects during the player's freshman year, but an NCAA spokesman said no rules were broken, The Indianapolis Star reported.
