MISSED FIELD GOALS New Endland. Garcia 42 Green Bay, Zendeias 43 ASSOCIATED PRESS Rich Karlis kicked a 22-yard field goal after an interception by corner-back Steve Wilson to give the visiting Denver Broncos a 16-13 overtime victory over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. Steve Young, who took over at quarterback for the 49ers after Joe Montana left with bruised ribs, threw a pass from his 3-yard line and Wilson caught the ball after it went off the hands of receiver John Taylor. Wilson returned it 7 yards to the San Francisco 5-yard line and Karlis made the winning kick, with 8:1 1 elapsed in the overtime period, after Denver used one running play to improve position for the field goal attempt. The Broncos, 3-3, were forced into overtime for the second time in three weeks when Karlis missed a 34-yard attempt with two seconds remaining in regulation.

Denver won the coin toss and, because of the strong Candlestick Park wind that made passing hazardous, chose to have the wind at its back. The 49ers fell to 4-2 with the loss, 1-2 at home. Montana, who had left the game briefly in the fourth quarter, was at quarterback when the overtime began, but left after a few plays. The 49ers had two possessions and were unable to get into field-goal range. Denver tied the score with 6:23 remaining in regulation when Vance Johnson caught an 8-yard pass from John Elway for the Broncos' first touchdown in more than nine periods.

The Broncos drove 58 yards after defensive tackle Greg Kragen recovered a fumble by Montana. Karlis made a pair of 27-yard field goals, in the second and third quarters, and the 49ers' Mike Cofer was successful on kicks of 37 and 27 yards. Cofer missed a 47-yard attempt. MISSED FIELD GOALS Denver, Karlis 34 San Francisco, Cofer 47, and setting up another Sunday, as the host Minnesota Vikings rallied for a 14-13 victory over the 13-point underdog Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Carter's diving 1 1-yard reception preceded Allen Rice's 1-yard scoring run with 2:49 left in the third quarter, putting the Vikings ahead, 14-10. Minnesota, 4-2, began that drive on Tampa Bay's 16 after David Howard returned a James Wilder fumble 33 yards. That was the fourth turnover two by each team in a 3'2-minute span of the third period. Vinny Testaverde hit Stephen Starring with a 53-yard desperation pass to Minnesota's 21 with 15 seconds left to play.

The Buccaneers, however, had no timeouts and Donald Igwebuike wasn't able to get his 38-yard field goal off in time. Tampa Bay has been outscored, 64-0, in the first quarter this season and has given up at least one first-period score in each game. The Vikings kept that string intact as Tommy Kramer hit Carter with an 11-yard touchdown pass 8:49 into the game. Midway through the second quarter, Testaverde capped a 65-yard drive with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Mark Carrier for a 7-7 tie. "At that point," Esiason said, "we (the offensive players) were getting a little upset. Our defense had held the Jets to three points, but we (the offense) had given them 1 6." But again, redemption was only one drive away.

On the first snap after Toon's TD, Esiason hit McGee for 28 yards and a first down at the New York 47. Then Woods took over, pounding three straight times over the right side for gains of 7, 21 and 9 yards. On his fourth try, the 232-pound rookie went to the left and powered in from the 5 for his fifth TD in the last three games. The Jets had the ball five more times, going punt, punt, punt and fumble on the first four and then running out of time with the ball on the Cincinnati 24. In the interim, the Bengals scored twice more on Woods' 17-yard smash up the middle and Breech's 25-yard field goal.

CONTINUED FROMIB can score in a hurry. They may not get a first down for three straight series, then they'll score three straight times. All we have to do is keep the game close." Zander's postgame analysis of the Cincinnati offense was on the money. After giving up the safety and the fumble early, the Bengals managed a couple of first downs on their third chance, then wasted that opportunity when Jim Breech's 34-yard field goal try was blocked. But after the early struggles, Esiason and the offense started earning their checks.

The last three times the Bengals had the ball in the first half, they scored 60 yards in one play (the bomb to Brown), 74 yards in 10 plays (the 8-yarder to Brown) and 80 yards in seven plays (the 38-yarder to McGee). That trademark was laid on him early in life by a baby sibling who couldn't say "Elbert." It stuck. What else would Ickey do? The rookie from Nevada-Las Vegas, who keeps his curly, raven-black hair in a ponytail that flows out the back of his helmet, became the game's focus late in the first quarter after Stanley Wilson's back began aching again. With the score Jets 9, Bengals 6, the Bengals took the ball at their 26 and it was Ickey for Ickey for Ickey for 2 and a first down; Ickey catches a pass for 13; Ickey for 9.

Pattern established. The Bengals might just Ickey Kitchy Koo the Jets to death. "That was right up my alley," Ickey said. "I was the main offensive power at Las Vegas last year. I carried 34-35 times a game." He led the NCAA in rushing with 1,658 yards.

Later, Ickey credited his linemen with big holes, but Munoz threw the credit back at the kid. "He was biting at the bit to get the ball," Mm. said. "It was, 'Give it to me! Give it to me! Give it to You like that in a back. "There were times when they tried to hit him for a loss of 2 or 3 yards, and he just ran right over them.

In the NFL, no matter how big the holes look, they're not that big." The Bengals kept feeding their 6-foot, 231 -pound hammer the ball between left-handed lasers into the Jets' secondary by also quaintly-nicknamed Boomer Esiason. The Jets were never in it, even when they were leading. The Jets' best defensive play of the day was when the NFL's replay critics, Siskel and Ebert, couldn't agree on a Bengal play early in the second quarter. Receiver Tim McGee had only one foot down in the end zone. Siskel said it was a TD.

Ebert said no. After eight minutes of debate, Ebert prevailed. No big deal. The Bengals scored on the next play. There was no debate on Ickey's two TDs.

The first came midway through the third period, a 5-yard bolt off left tackle, after which he showed the modified Ickey Shuffle or Son of Shuffle. "I originally did it after I scored against Cleveland two weeks ago," Woods said. "I flew my mom in from Fresno for that game because I figured I was gonna score. When I did my dance, I pointed at her in the stands. "Today, 1 figure she was watching on television, so Rickey Dixon and I added a new glitch to it before the game." (The "glitch" was that four-hop deal on the right foot with left leg up like a dog going from hydrant to hydrant.) Woods scored again in the fourth quarter, a 17-yard pop that gave the Bengals a two-TD lead.

But he didn't dance. "Too tired," he said. "By then, all I could do was raise my hands." McGee helped celebrate that one by stealing the towel Ickey wears wrapped around his head inside his helmet like a bandana. McGee whirled it overhead as he came off, lifting the crowd of 57,482 to full celebration. Then Ickey left the field slowly, his hand raised and revolving above his head, leading the crowd to greater heights.

"I wear the towel," Ickey said without embarrassment, "to keep the curling solution I use on my hair out of my eyes." He's the prototype of the late '80s hero: fab nickname; ponytail down his back; towel to keep the damned curling solution out of his eyes; a member of Reggie Williams' "hip-hop generation." "I don't know what Reggie means by that," Ickey said. "I just hope It's good." N.Y.
